4. Purpose of book:
To illustrate the emotional impact caused by what a
leader says or does:
Main job of leadership is emotional
Negative emotions can disrupt work
When people feel good, they work at their best, especially in
teams.
The leader’s emotional state and actions affect the people that
they lead and how well these people perform.
Importance of creating “resonance” with followers
5. Did Authors Achieve Objectives?:
Looking at leadership in a new way:
Emotional Intelligence:
Personal Competence : (Managing Ourselves)
Self Awareness: understanding own emotions & impact of those emotions
Self Management: Keeping emotions under control by being flexible &
optimistic
Social Competence: (Managing relationships)
Social Awareness: Sensing and understanding others’ emotions
Relationship Management: Motivation with vision, developing others,
teambuilding
6. Competencies:
Four competencies of Emotional Intelligence:
1. Drive to achieve results
2. The ability to take initiative
3. Skillful in collaboration and teamwork
4. Ability to lead teams
7. Strengths of the book:
Authors clear in describing how important emotional
intelligence is as part of leading people.
Most at management level do not understand this
Studies and research performed regarding physiologic
principles-brain activity/limbic system as proof of
usefulness of E.I.
Strongest lesson is that anyone can be a good leader
Must have the desire
8. Shortcomings of the book:
Emotional Intelligence is very important as part of
being a leader, but:
a leader of today must possess many qualities and traits that
include being a good communicator, visionary, flexible and
influential.
Too in depth, very long book that could have been
made much shorter and more simplistic.
9. Recommend the book?
For whom and what circumstances:
I would recommend Primal Leadership: Learning to
lead with emotional intelligence to all Leaders,
inside and outside of Healthcare
Emotional Intelligence is a crucial aspect of anyone
wanting to become a successful leader in today’s
society.
