Christ, the Life of all the living, Christ, the Death of death, our foe, Who, Thyself for me once giving To the darkest depths of woe,-- Through thy sufferings, death, and merit I eternal life inherit: Thousand, thousand thanks shall be, Dearest Jesus, unto Thee. 2. Thou, ah! Thou, hast taken on Thee Bonds and stripes, a cruel rod; Pain and scorn were heaped upon Thee, 0 Thou sinless Son of God! Thus didst Thou my soul deliver From the bonds of sin forever. 3. Thou hast borne the smiting only That my wounds might all be whole; Thou hast suffered, sad and lonely, Rest to give my weary soul; Yea, the curse of God enduring, Blessing unto me securing. 4. Heartless scoffers did surround Thee, Treating Thee with shameful scorn, And with piercing thorns they crowned Thee. All disgrace Thou, Lord, hast borne That as Thine Thou mightest own me And with heavenly glory crown me. 5. Thou hast suffered men to bruise Thee That from pain I might be free; Falsely did Thy foes accuse Thee,-- Thence I gain security; Comfortless Thy soul did languish Me to comfort in my anguish. 6. Thou hast suffered great affliction And hast borne it patiently, Even death by crucifixion, Fully to atone for me; Thou didst choose to be tormented That my doom should be prevented. 7. Then, for all that wrought my pardon, For Thy sorrows deep and sore, For Thine anguish in the Garden, I will thank Thee evermore, Thank Thee for Thy groaning, sighing, For Thy bleeding and Thy dying, For that last triumphant cry, And shall praise Thee, Lord, on high.

7. The fact is that the cross isn't a form of cosmic child abuse—a vengeful Father, punishing his Son for an offence he has not even committed. Understandably, both people inside and outside of the Church have found this twisted version of events morally dubious and a huge barrier to faith. Deeper than that, however, is that such a concept stands in total contradiction to the statement: ‘God is love’. If the cross is a personal act of violence perpetrated by God towards humankind but borne by his Son, then it makes a mockery of Jesus' own teaching to love your enemies and to refuse to repay evil with evil.” (Steve Chalke and Alan Mann, The Lost Message of Jesus, [Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan, 2003], pp. 182-183) 2nd Art. 8. The nature of Christ’s humiliation brings up the following questions: How do the attributes of God function with kenosis? What is the division between Christ’s humiliation and exaltation? What is the nature of Christ’s sacrifice on the cross regarding kenosis? 2nd Art. Christ’s Humiliation: Lutheran
9. Doctrine of Kenosis: Christ voluntarily empties himself (Kenosis) of his rights and privileges emanating from His divinity Christ takes up the nature of a servant, and borrows all things in this world as one who does not own anything. Active and Passive Obedience as one who secures righteousness and suffers as a sinner. Christ’s humiliation is not: Intrinsic to the incarnation, but to the purpose and willing activity of Christ through and by it. The emptying of the divine nature or the relinquishing of the nature of God 2nd Art. Christ’s Humiliation: Doctrine
10. 3. Divine prerogatives He set aside the prerogatives of His deity--the voluntary use of His attributes. He did not stop being omniscient or omnipresent. He remained omniscient--He knew what was in man (John 2:25). He was omnipresent--though not physically present, He saw Nathaniel under a tree (John 1:45-49). He didn't give up any of His deity but He did give up the free exercise of His attributes, limiting Himself to the point of saying that He did not know the time of His second coming (Matt. 24:36). 4. Eternal riches He gave up His personal riches. "Though He was rich, yet for [our] sake He became poor, that [we] through His poverty might become rich (2 Cor. 8:9). Christ was poor in this world; He owned very little. 5. A favorable relationship God "made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf" (2 Cor. 5:21). As a result our Lord cried out on the cross, "My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me?" Though Christ renounced all those privileges, He never ceased to be God. At any moment He could have blasted His enemies off the face of the earth, but He didn't. He voluntarily emptied Himself. 2nd Art. Christ’s Humiliation: Renounce
11. Let all of you run together as to one temple of God, as to one altar, to one Jesus Christ, who came forth from one Father and remained with the One and returned to the One.“ Ignatius(Epistle to the Magnesians, 7.2) He even yet more signally bestowed His benefits upon them, and went straightway to them that were about to crucify Him, to the intent that He might but only save them. 12. Luther emphasized the exaltation of Christ in the incarnation: “When he [Christ] began to be a man, he also began to be God” “The state of humiliation, therefore, does not denote the unconditional lack and absence of the divinity and majesty communicated to the flesh, but only the retraction and intermission of its use” Even though Christ was fully God, and taking on the nature (hypostasis) of man exalted man, the purpose was a voluntary renunciation of the power intrinsic to His divine nature. Christ emphasized the power of the Father and the Spirit in performing miracles Christ suffers voluntarily on the cross. 2nd Art. Christ’s Humiliation: Lutheran
13. Through historical narrative, Yahweh develops his power through weakness Consider: Adam needing clothing Noah needing an ark Abraham needing a child Isaac needing…not to die Moses needing a passage Ruth needing a kinsmen-redeemer David needing a straight shot Through poetic device, Yahweh develops an understanding that: The proud and exalted on this earth are unjustified before the Lord The weak and those persecuted participate in a humiliation that allows for the power of God to be manifest. Through prophecy, Yahweh develops an archetype character who is THE Suffering Servant. 2nd Art. Christ’s Humiliation: OT Context

19. "In the Christian story God descends to re-ascend. He comes down; down from the heights of absolute being into time and space, down into humanity ... down to the very roots and sea-bed of the Nature He has created. think of a diver, first reducing himself to nakedness, then glancing in mid-air, then gone with a splash, vanished, rushing down through green and warm water into black and cold water, down through increasing pressure into the death-like region of ooze and slime and old decay; then up again, back to colour and light, his lungs almost bursting, till suddenly he breaks surface again, holding in his hand the dripping, precious thing that he went down to recover. He and it are both coloured now that they have come up into the light: down below, where it lay colourless in the dark, he lost his colour, too. "In this descent and re-ascent everyone will recognize a familiar pattern: a thing written all over the world. It is the pattern of all vegetable life. 21. SS: Humiliation: Salvation = humiliation + exaltation. Christ’s humiliation was that as a man He did not always or fully use His divine powers. Phil 2:5-6 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a servant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross (NKJV). Jn 2:1-11 Wedding at Cana; Jn 11:38-44 Raising of Lazarus; Jn 18:1-6 Rays of hidden glory “Conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.” • Pray: Lord Jesus, true God and man, Son of the Father and mary’s Son, grant me Your Holy Spirit so that I may behold Your glory in Your Word, even as Your disciples beheld it with enlightened eyes. And grant that I may believe in You, as Your disciples believed in You, in order that I may belong to the blessed company of those who obtain eternal life through faith in You, Amen. (C.M. Zorn, 1846-1928)
22. Pray: We render thanks unto You, O God, through Your beloved Servant Jesus Christ, whom in the last times You sent to be a Savior and Redeemer and the Angel of Your counsel. He is Your Word inseparable from You. Through Him You made all things and in Him You were well pleased. You sent Him from Heaven into the Virgin’s womb, and when conceived within her was made flesh, and demonstrated to be Your Son, being born of the Holy Spirit and a Virgin. He fulfilled Your will and obtained for You a holy people, stretching forth His hands for suffering that He might release from sufferings those who have believed in You. He was betrayed to voluntary suffering in order that He might abolish death and rend the bonds of the devil and tread down Hell and enlighten the righteous. And we pray that You would grant to all who partake of the sacrament that they may be one, that they may be filled with the Holy Spirit for the confirmation of their faith in truth. May we praise and glorify You through Your Servant Jesus Christ. Through Him honor and glory be unto You with the Holy Spirit in Your holy Church, now and forever and world without end. Amen. (Hippolytus of Rome, c. 170-c.236)
23. M Conception and Birth: The scriptures teach that Christ, the Son of God, received a true human body and soul in the Virgin Mary through the miraculous power of the Holy Spirit, not through a human father. Lu 1:35 The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. Matt. 1:20 Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. The scriptures teach that Jesus Christ, the God-man, was born of the Virgin Mary. Is. 7:14 The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call Him Immanuel. Mt 1:23 –which means God with us. Luke 2:7 She gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped Him in cloths and placed Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. Mt 1:18-25 Virgin Birth • Pray: Indeed, Lord Jesus Christ, You are wonderful, You are “The Wonderful” foretold by the Prophet. No man’s reason can comprehend You. But shine in my heart by means of Your Word: by means of Your Gospel cast Your image into my soul, glorify Yourself within my heart and soul through Your Holy Spirit, that I may believe in You, true God and man. You are my only and dearly beloved Savior, blessed forever! Amen. (C.M. Zorn, 1846-1928)
24. T Life, Suffering, and Death The scriptures teach that Christ A. endured poverty, contempt, and persecution in his earthly life. 2 Cor. 8:9 Though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, so that you through His poverty might become rich. Matt. 8:20 Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay His head. Is. 53:3 He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering. Like one from whom men hide their faces He was despised, and we esteemed Him not. John 8:40 You are determined to kill Me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. narratives: At His birth Jesus had only strips of cloth and a manger (Luke 2:7). Herod tried to murder Him, but He escaped to Egypt (Matt. 2:13). In Nazareth the people tried to throw Him down from the brow of the hill (Luke 4:29). In the temple they picked up stones to stone Him (John 8:59). • Pray: Only the innocent suffering and death of Jesus Christ, the Lamb without spot or blemish, is the true offering for our iniquities. His blood, shed for the remission of our sins, is the cleansing purification of our souls. In such confidence and hope I ask You: forgive the transgressions of Your people. Cover our sins. Cleanse me from secret fault. Let my sorrowing soul and my afflicted bones again rejoice, for with You there is mercy and plenteous redemption. Amen. (Johann Habermann, 1516-90)
25. W Life, Suffering, and Death B. suffered great agony of body and soul under Pontius Pilate John 19:1-3 Pilate took Jesus and had Him flogged. The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on His head. They clothed Him in a purple robe and went up to Him again and again, saying, "Hail, king of the Jews!" And they struck Him in the face. Bible narrative: The suffering of Christ (Mark 15:1-20). C. Died in excruciating agony on the cross. John 19:16-18 Finally Pilate handed Him over to them to be crucified. So the soldiers took charge of Jesus. Carrying His own cross, He went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is called Golgotha). Here they crucified Him. Matt. 27:46 About the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice . . . "My God, My God, why have You for saken Me?" (He suffered the tortures of the damned in hell.) John 19:30 He bowed His head and gave up His spirit. Bible narrative: The death of Christ (Mark 15:42-47). • Pray: Grant me to follow in the footsteps of my Lord Jesus Christ, that I may pattern my life after His life, daily dying unto and denying myself. May I bear my cross in patient and humble submission to You; loving my neighbor and doing unto him as Christ has one for me; and safely guarding myself against everything that displeases You, my Lord. When my last hour shall come, grant that I call upon Your Holy Name and set my trust and hope in the merit of Your bitter sufferings and death, which I set up between men and Your judgment. O Jesus, I am Yours. Save me by Your grace. Amen. (J.K.W. Loehe, 1808-1872).
26. ThBurial The scriptures teach Christ’s body was buried in the tomb and remained there until the third day, without decaying in any way. Acts 13:37 The one whom God raised from the dead did not see decay. Bible narrative: The burial of Christ (Mark 15:42). • Pray: O holy, but afflicted Jesus, how is my soul divided between the two so different passions of joy and grief. When I consider Your sufferings upon the cross for my sake, and the redemption of a lost and undone world, my eyes gush forth with rivers of waters, when I think on those pains and agonies it cost You, to pay the bitter price of my redemption. Hear me, O Lord, for Your mercy’s sake, and let not Your cross fall heavy on me, on account of my sins, or crush me to pieces. But through the merits of Your cross, let me be exalted into Your everlasting kingdom. Amen. (Johann Gerhard, 1582-1637).
