1. THE EAGLES
The Eagles are one of the world’s best-selling bands in history. The group was formed
from Los Angeles country-rock scene in the early 1971. The group started with 4
professional band singers, Don Henley, Glenn Frey, Randy Meisner and Bernie Leadon,
whom Linda Ronstadt’s recruited as her local musicians and backup band. After working
with Ronstadt, Henley and Frey decided to form the Eagles, recruiting Leadon and
Meisner. With Glen Frey as a guitarist and vocalist, Don Henley on the drums and also a
vocalist, Randy Meisner as the bass guitarist and vocalist, and Bernie Leadon as a
guitarist and vocalist, the Eagles were determined to take country rock of the Byrds and
Burritos a step forward to the world of hard rock so they recorded their eponymous
debut album “Eagles”.
MUSICAL CAREER
The four were signed to Asylum Records in September 1971. The four were sent to
Aspen, Colorado by David Geffen to develop as a band. They performed their first show
in October 1971 without any band name under the name of “Teen King and the
Emergencies” at a club called “The Gallery” in Aspen.
MUSICAL RECOGNITION
The turning point for the Eagles came with the group’s eponymous debut which was
released in England on June 1, 1972 with Glyn Johns as the producer and which
contained three top 40 singles with the single “Take It Easy” being No. 12 on the chart
on the he Billboard Hot 100 in 1972 and this was a huge success for the Eagles. Their
other single “Witchy Woman” reached No. 9 on the Billboard that same year and
“Peaceful Easy Feeling” also was number 22 on the chart. The lead track “Take It Easy”
was written by Frey and his then neighbor.
Their next LP “Desperado” was less a success than the first as it yielded no major pop
hit and it only managed to hit No. 41 on the US Billboard 200 and neither of its tracks
reached the top 40. The album also yielded only two singles “Outlaw Man” and “Tequila
Sunrise” which only managed to reach number 59 and 61 respectively on the Billboard
Hot 100. However, its title track became a classic rock standard which was covered by
the likes of Linda Ronstadt.
Their next album, “On The Border” had a new producer, Bill Szymczyk and another
guitarist, Don Felder, was added because the new producer wanted a harder form of
rock music apart from the country rock style they had been into. The heightened
emphasis on rock increased their listeners and fan base in the mid-1970s. On the 6th of
April, 1974, the band played at the California Jam festival in Ontario, California,
2. attracting over 300,000 fans. This further exposed the Eagles to a wider audience.
Their fourth studio album was dropped on the 10th of June, 1975. This album caused a
turnaround for the Eagles making them international superstars. The album was
nominated for a Grammy Awards for Album of the Year. It also produced a No. 1
Billboard single on March 1,1975, which is the track “Best Of My Love”. “One Of These
Nights” was also No. 1 on the chart. “Lyin’ Eyes” was No. 2 in year 1975 and it won the
band their first Grammy Awards for “Best Pop Performance by a duo or group with voca
l”. “Take It to the Limit” was No. 4 that same year. This was a string of 4 consecutive No.
1 albums. They embarked on a worldwide tour to celebrate the success of this album.
Leadon left the group and was replaced by Joe Welsh and the little element of country
rock left with him. The rock became harder with the addition of Don Felder and Jon
Welsh in the band.
The band released their first compilation album which was the best-selling album of the
20th century in the United States of America and it remained the best-selling album for
some years. This album made them the most successful American band of the decade.
The fifth studio album of the band titled “Hotel California” was released on the 8th of
December, 1976. The album’s first single “New Kid in Town” was the Eagles’ third No. 1
single. “Title Track” topped the charts and became the Eagles’ signature song. ‘Life in
the Fast Lane” was No. 11 on the charts.
It took the Eagles 2 years to record their next studio album “The Long Run” but they
finally released it on the 24th of September, 1979. Although it didn’t get as much
success as Hotel California, it was however a huge commercial hit. The album sold
seven million copies and topped the charts. The album also includes 3 Top Ten singles.
“Heartache Tonight” earned them their fourth Grammy Awards and became their last
single to top the Hot 100 on the 10th of November, 1979. The title track and “I Can’t
Tell You Why” both reached number 8. Their Christmas single “Please Come Home for
Christmas” got to No. 18 on the charts.
The band disunited in 1980 and they basically went solo. This remained so until 1994
when they united and released an Eagles country tribute album titled “Common Thread:
The Song of the Eagles”. This album debuted at No. 1 on Billboard in the album chart.
They released yet another great compilation album “The Very Best Of” which covers
their entire career from Eagles up to Hell Freezes Over. This album debuted at No. 3 on
the Billboard and gained triple platinum status.
Having waited till 2017, the Eagles released a single to radio. This debuted on Country
Music Television during the Top 20 Countdown on the 23rd of August, 2007. They
3. released yet another album “Long Road Out of Eden”. This album debuted as No. 1 in the
U.S., the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Netherlands and Norway. This earned
them their fifth Grammy Awards for “Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group” for
the second single in this album.
