Andre Bazin was a renowned and influential Frenchfilm critic and film theorist.Bazin wrote
several essays surrounding his ideas about film. One in particular was called ‘Qu'est- ceque le
cinéma’?which translates to ‘What is Cinema?’.

The repertoire of elements
The repertoire of element is a set of terms which represent the breakdown of all the essential
sections of a film.
· Iconography - The physical tools of the trade. For example in a horror movie it would be a
knife or blood.
· Setting – Particular genres usually have a distinct location. For example a horror film is usually
filmed in a deserted area to add to the seclusion and vulnerability of the victim.
· Characters – There tends to be a number of stereotypical characters to help enhance the
role of the narrative. For example an antagonist, protagonist etc.
· Narrative - The process of story telling. Narrative is sometimes referred to as the plot.
· Style – Style refers to they way in which the text is presented.
· Theme – Some films may direct their storyline to particular themes that are issues within
society. Such as gangster films, for example, may explicitly demonstrate the existence of
violence and danger.
· Audience Response – The way in which audiences respond to media texts is essential for
companies’ chances of flourishing financially. Therefore film directors need to make sure they
reach out successfully to different groups in society to fulfill distinct entertainment
requirements.
· Genre hybrids – A genre hybrid is a combination or a merge of several different types of
genre.
