Strategy and Planning for Microsoft Teams
Ever wonder about the mechanics of Microsoft Teams? Teams is the doorway to Office 365 with files in SharePoint, but what about the wiki and conversations and OneNote and the chat history? In this session we’ll drill into what gets stored where and drill into the limits of compliance in Microsoft Teams as we roll our sleeves up and get our hands dirty.

First and foremost- are we going to have a coexistence? Am I going to be using them together side-by-side - some folks on skype and some on teams or are you going to leave on Friday and come in Monday and now we are using Teams.
The idea for co-existence modes - It’s a way for us to deterministically control what the user experience would be like.
The modes you see in blue - there are five of them - Each mode can be assigned to a group of users or at a tenant level.
Purpose - is to control 3 main things:
Where calls and chats land
Control where we schedule meetings
Control what types of features we have in the various clients.
Islands - almost unmanaged - where all workloads are running on both products- Teams talks to Teams and S4B talks to S4B. Introduce into the environment without disturbing the environment. There is no interop.
Note: PSTN are only one client. Smaller complexity but no interop so may impact usability - user adoption aspect you need to think through.
Single Client Mode (Bottom Two)- My UC capabilities are only active in one client for a particular user. I will only use my Teams client or my Skype for business client for these particular modalities. This differs from Islands is that its OR and not AND. Can be good for larger organizations - interop is possible - a cohort of users can't use Teams just yet - full enterprise voice perhaps.
Limits confusion
Provides a rapid path to the full value of Teams
Interop is not as rich as native (e.g desktop sharing, file sharing in peer to peer chat / no cross multi-party group chat)
Group Collab Only (Top Two)- Have the capability of using S4B - chat, calling, meetings - but the only workload we light up is Collab - channels, files, etc. (keep your commitments with S4B server capabilities + allowing you to adopt teams)
Group Collab + scheduling of meetings inside of teams. This has to do with where the user schedules the meeting - I can join with either client - just where they would schedule
==============================
Unified Presence vs Intelligent Presence
Unified presence (older way of thinking about presence):
Teams and SfB systems coordinate to manage and sync presence in both systems
Intelligent presence (current approach):
Islands = Each client publishes its own presence
SfB Only = SfB publishes for both
Teams Only = Teams publishes for both
There is a spectrum of options for extending Teams.
There’s a tradeoff here … From left to right each option requires more technical expertise and usually more work, and gives you more potential features and flexibility
You can:
- use applications from the Teams store – check it out! There’s a lot already there!
- use low/no-code options like PowerApps, Flow, and even QnA Maker bots
- begin from an open source reference solution (make sure you have the ability to support it!)
- start from scratch with completely custom development
Teams applications can add a number of features to the Teams UI
Tabs and Bots are the two most important, and both are possible using low-code/no-code solutions
With the addition of code, you can add even more; some of our upcoming workshops go deeper into the coding and discuss these other options.

Tabs allow you to surface rich content within Teams, so you can bring the tools and services your team cares about right into a channel or private chat. Add rich dashboards and data visualization, collaborate on documents and note taking, manage tasks across the group, and share designs.
Bots help users get tasks done in conversations in Teams. Bots can do things like kick-off workflows and provide related status, give and receive kudos from team members, create lightweight surveys to gauge employee satisfaction, and answer natural language questions about sales and customer usage data.
Connectors help bring useful information and rich content from external services into channels in Microsoft Teams. Get social media notifications, updates about pull and push requests, and news updates.
With Actionable messages, you can add rich content to your connector cards.
Message extensions allow users to query and share rich cards in conversations.
Activity feed notifications engage users via feed notifications.

And with this rich set of capabilities, many the result of partner feedback, it has opened up significant opportunities for you as partners to create a very wide range of customized solutions for your customers.
The Power Platform consists of PowerApps, for building mobile-ready apps. Flow, for workflow and business orchestration, and Power BI for displaying and analyzing the data. All three work inside of Microsoft Teams. A PowerApp or Power BI report can easily be placed in a Teams tab, and a number of Flow actions are available to work with Teams.
There are more then 200 connectors from Power Platform to industry-leading applications.
There’s also an on-premises data gateway that allows your apps to connect with SharePoint, SQL Server, and more.
Stress the end results and outcomes. PRFT is driving Proficiency on the platform. Most are driving adoption…
