Here are some potential strategies to mitigate the constraints:
- Organisational: Book equipment well in advance and have backups planned.
- Location: Scout alternative locations and have permits/permissions arranged. Consider modifying script.
- Technical: Fully charge all equipment, have backup batteries, test equipment thoroughly beforehand.
- Cost: Consider prop alternatives that look real but are safe, e.g. toy guns painted black. Apply for funding.
- Personnel: Have backup cast/crew available. Schedule shoots so some can be done with fewer people.
- Time: Storyboard thoroughly. Prioritize critical shots. Schedule additional filming days as backups.
Being aware of potential constraints and having contingency
2. You MUST conduct a questionnaire/survey/interview or a combination of all three.
Summarise this and add in any other primary research you feel is appropriate
https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/5CPTS9Q
3. Research viewing figures, sales figures, demographic and psychographic info.
Look up article, features or stories related to your potential audience
The Dark knight rises
• The box office figures for the dark knight rises is: 1.085 billion USD
• The dark knight rises has a certification of 12a

• Belongers are the most watched with this
film as batman is an already massively
branded film
4. For this you should summarise your primary and secondary research, through this
you should then be able to produce an audience outline that you intend to target.
For this you could also produce an audience profile.
Primary audience
• My primary audience age will be ranged from 17-20.
• I will target males rather than females as the suspense and terror is what males tend to like
more.
• My audience will have a social statues of E-C2 as they have more recreational time than
others so they're more likely to watch the film also people with a lower social statues tend to
spend more time on social media where it would most likely be published.
• The psychographics of socially conscious type B as thrillers would relate to them mostly and
excite them more than others.
Secondary audience
• My secondary audience will be aged 12-16 as the short film will have a certification of 12a so
there will be younger teenagers wanting to see the film and as there is no graphic scenes in
the film parents will allow them to watch it.
• Again the short film will be targeted at males as female don’t tend to like conflict.
• My secondary will be a part of the belonger group as the message it family orientated which
will interest them also the short film will be set in England and UK based so there wont be
any reason for them to dislike the short film.
5. Given your idea generation and your audience research, what sort of content
would you define as the appropriate. Consider issues of taste, certification [BBFC
might be a good starting point for this], etc. Look at what you’d like to include and
what you are allowed to include.
I would like to include a short non graphic kidnapping scene in my film, as long as
there is no blood and gore. The BBFC say ‘No glamorisation of realistic or easily
accessible weapons such as knives.’ I will use a gun for my characters weapons
as they're not easily attained by 12 year olds and will no make them want to
replicate the behaviour seen in the short film.
‘There may be moderate physical and psychological threat and horror sequences.
Although some scenes may be disturbing, the overall tone should not be. Horror
sequences should not be frequent or sustained.’ in my short film there will be a
moderate threat as it will not have an physical violence, one of the kidnappers will
pick the girl up and take her out of the house but there will
6. Research potential production techniques you might want to use
or feel would be most appropriate – these can be related to
camera, editing, story, sound, etc
You should look at a minimum of 3 related products in your
research.
You should collect clips/still images/how to guides/etc that might
help you. When watching scenes from films, etc you could also
ask potential target audience what they think.
You will need to add extra slides!
With each technique you should assess whether you can use it or
how you might employ or why you may want to disregard it
completely

In the short film lights out, the
corridor is used to create
mystery in the film as the
woman turn the light off and
sees a silhouette of a person
from the light in the kitchen,
this gives a scary effect to the
film as the darkness masks
the persons identity which
convey a sense of evil as they
do not know who they are. It
is clear from the woman's
expression that she lives
alone as she is startled by the
appearance of another
person. the film uses a single
bed as a prop to show she
lives alone. This is a tip for my
film to use props to show what
is going on in the film. In my
film I will have the kidnappers
holding guns to show the
audience that they are there
to conflict pain and scare their
victims
In this short film there is
only 2 rooms used with a
selection of close up
shots and medium shots
this creates the element
of being trapped which is
a good way to express
the emotions in a horror
film as if there is no way
out the character is
going to be scared
making the film more
intense and keeping the
viewer entertained. In
my film I will use the idea
of no escape but I will
shoot my scene with a
long shot as I will have
to show three characters
as there are two
kidnappers.
The sound effects of the woman quivering under
the sheets shows that the woman is under
stress and isn’t coping with the situation very
well, this shows that the film is going to be
intense as there is panicking going on.
Panicking helps to keep the viewer entertained
as they want to see what she is panicking for or
what is going to happen to her. In my film I will
include screams of terror as it makes the film
more interesting as it makes the viewer not want
to miss what is happens making them want to
watch the film till the end.

content-rid-1226362_1/courses/DICMA03-17/LOOP.mp4
The use of the sound effects in this film
suggest there has been an accident.
the phone of the hook is a stereotypical
murder scene to noise as in any normal
situation someone would have put the
phone back. The broken mug and the
tissue already in the bin helps to hint at
the fact his death is occurring over and
over again. this is a good technique to
use because although the mug and
broken cup mean nothing at the time
when the accident happens the props
help to paint the picture of a loop which
the viewer will look back at the cup and
start to piece it all to together. This also
helps the viewer engage in the film and
think about what has happened making
the film more interesting for them, I will
include this technique in my film by
leaving my film on a cliff hanger so that
the viewer has to think about what will
happen to the girl.
The confused look on the
mans face builds tension in
the film as it does not show
what he is looking at leaving
the viewers on the edge of
their seats wanting to know
what is happening, this
technique keeps the viewer
interested in the film and
wanting to know what
happens. I will apply this
technique by letting the car
drive away and a shot of the
character upset by the fact
they have lost their sister, this
will help the viewers stay
interested to so that they can
see what happens to the girl.

1226364_1/courses/DICMA03-17/Cam%20Closer.mp4
The short film cam closer is a very
clever film as it on allows you to
see what they want you to see, with
normal films there is the all the
surroundings in the film but using
the phone the film makes you focus
on that certain thing. This is a good
way to build the suspense in the
film as there is nothing else to
distract the audience from what is
happening. In my film I may use a
plain room for the kidnapping scene
so that all the focus is on the main
scene making the film more
entertaining, it will also make the
film more intense which will appeal
to my target audience as teenagers
can easily loose attention to the film
so keeping it highly intense will
keep them from finding the film
tedious.
The idea of the phone being the
woman’s eyes is entertaining as
when she moves her phone away
from her face she cannot see what
is happening this is a good way to
keep the viewers entertained
because when she is not looking
through her phone she is blind to
the unnatural occurrences.
Although this is a good idea it can
only be used in a unrealistic
environment as if it was realistic
you would able able to see her
lying on the floor when she takes
her phone away, making an
unrealistic event tense will not give
you the same effect as the reader
will be thinking that is not real and
will not be as scary fro them.
Therefore I do not think the
technique is worth doing as it does
not give a realistic effect to the film.
The sounds that are used in the short
film are very good as they are sharp
and fast which will keep the viewer on
their toes and interested, I will use the
same technique with my film as ity
would add to the intensity of the film.
If I was to use slow and fading music
it wouldn’t have the same effect as
the kidnapping has to be quick and
skillful.
11. - For the experiments we used the cannon 600D camera
with a tripod so that we could have a steady shot as if we
shot the advert hand-held the camera the shot would have
been unsteady and would have made the advert look
unprofessional, although the advert is comedic having the
camera steady would make the product look worthy and
not put together without care which would convey a bad
messaged to the audience as it would make the product
look like there is no care put in the product.
- The advert has different shots in the same location which
means the advert has to have continuity as there is a long
shot of the boy getting beaten by the bully then it cuts to a
medium close up of the boy drinking the irn-bru then
gaining the courage and ability to get the bully off the boy
getting beaten and then cuts to another long shot with the
bully and the boy in the shot so the boy and the bully have
to be in the same place when it cuts back or else the shot
wouldn’t make sense.
12. What elements of your experiments will you include in your final
product?
In my film the speed of the characters will have be included in my
film as there will be action in the film. I will also include the idea of a
helpless person in my film as the girl that is being kidnapped cannot
do anything about and her brother has to save her. This is the
classic damsel in distress which is common in thriller films.
I will also include the idea of the character using something to get
what they want although the context is different in the experiments
the idea is still the same. The boy drinks the irn-bru for a placebo
effect and to beat the bully that is beat the defenseless kid, this is
the same as the boy using his money to save his defenseless sister.
13. The editing process in the shaun of
the dead sound effect experiment
was quite challenging as it was hard
to find the correct sound effects to fit
the scenario, therefore I had to make
a loop of the footsteps going over
and over again so implicate that the
character was walking. As it was a
loop the sound effect would cut to
silence and make the sound effect
sound unnatural so I had to put a
very small exponential fade on the
end of the of the sound effect and a
small constant gain on the start of the
other so that you couldn’t hear the
cut out. This worked well to imply that
they were walking. I also used the
same technique to add in the fridge
fan techniques which helped to
create a nice background noise for
the shop. I used the cutting tool to
delete all the unwanted silence’s that
were before and after the sound
effects I wanted, I did this so that I
didn’t accidently cut out any of the
sound effect by mistake. Leaving a
few seconds before and after meant
that it was impossible to have bad
quality sound effect that were not full
leaving the clip sounding poor quality.
14. What elements of your experiments will you include in your final
product?
With the sound effects I collect, I will make sure I leave a couple of
seconds before and after my clips so that they are full and complete. If
they are longer than expected I can just cut them down rather than
having to make another sound effect due to the fact the sound effect
has been cut short which is very time consuming.
If I have to make a loop I will be able to add in exponential fades and
constant growths into my sound effects so that they sound smooth
and natural. This will help the contingency and also make the film look
natural.
15. In the shaun of the dead experiment the
editing processes were simple but
effective the clip is a silent clip that
involved me using a hand-held recording
device to collect the sound effects we
thought were appropriate for the clip. I
collected footsteps to mirror shaun
walking down the street and then running
footsteps as the guy is running past. This
gave a realistic effect to the scene as it
would not have made sense if shaun was
walking down the street with no noise.
When shaun enters the shop I added in a
change of background noise by adding in
the sound of refrigerator noises so that
the viewer could tell there was a change
in set. This also helped to cancelled out
any awkward silences in the clip which
would make the scene sound un-natural
which would displease my audience.
16. What elements of your experiments will you include in your final
product?
Using the experiment I know that it is important not to leave any
awkward silence in my film as it ruins the realistic effect on the film
which can make the film seem tedious if the film is not put together with
care making them inclined to watching the clip.
In the experiments I found that changing the background noise when
entering different rooms helps to keep the realistic effect on the film, by
using classic sounds that you hear in certain rooms such as a
refrigerator fan in a kitchen or a Tv in the living room it help to set the
scene and make the viewer feel like they're in the scene.
17. List all the potential constraints that might affect or limit your production, you
should consider issues from each of these categories:
Time/Personnel/Cost/Technical/Location/Organisational
Organisational: my equipment will not be ready for the time that I want them for.
Location: I will not be able to find suitable location to do the car chase as there are
parked cars outside my house.
Technical: The camera will not have the sufficient charge and run out through
filming.
Cost: I will not be able to afford replica guns for the characters.
Personnel: the cast will not be able to attend the shoot together as they're busy.
Time: I will not have enough time to film all my shots in the time I want to,
therefore not being able to complete my filming.
