in the study abroad office, study abroad advisors take student applications for the year 2011 season. Several students study in English-speaking countries, with the UK (33,300 students), Australia (11,000 students) and Ireland (6900) landing in the top 10 study abroad destinations. Other countries in the top 10 are Italy, Spain, France, China, Mexico, Germany and Costa Rica. The # 11 Japan (5700 students) had about 400 fewer study abroad participants than Costa Rica.
Brendan Perry a sophomore at DU plans to study in Mendoza Argentina. “I am really excited to go and learn more Spanish and about the Argentinean culture”
First years are already thinking about where they want to study aborad. “I know it’s a great expereince to have and it is awesome that DU offers such a wide variety of programs” says Andy Gatti First year student and DU.
The Study Abroad Office works hard to provide high-quality international programming and opportunities that will: - Introduce you to exciting new ways of seeing and knowing. - Allow you to pursue special academic interests in a fresh context, including service learning or an internship. - Help you develop a new international perspective on your major. - Give you the opportunity to explore in-depth aspects of the history, society, and culture of the host country. - Permit you to take electives unavailable at DU. - Start you on the road to a new minor. - Let you fulfill some of your general degree requirements.
Patricia Galvez, a junior at DU plans to study in Turkey next year. Galvez is one of many of the women at DU and in the states that study abroad. More women study abroad than men. About 65% of participants each year are female, 35% male.
Only 6.2% of students studying abroad are foreign language majors. A greater number of students have majors in social sciences, business fields, humanities, the arts and physical or life sciences
Claudia Alvarado is a Junior at DU, is working on her application for March. She still has trouble finding a place where she can get cultural immersion as well as enough credits for her major. “I’m already studying abroad right now. I’m from Honduras but I would really like to learn more about the middle east. The problem is that I cannot find a good program that encompasses all of what I need”.
DU’sCherrington program offers over 150 sites to choose from around the world. The Cherrington Global Scholars program enables eligible students to study abroad for no more than a term at DU would cost.
DU also allows students to go abroad through non-DU programs. However, DU does not cover the extra costs for any other program that is not offered by DU. EszterVarkarcs, DU alumni believes that one should take advantage of this opportunity no matter what “I think that going abroad is one of the best ideas ever. There is no such thing as going abroad too often. ”
The flexibility that DU offers increased the percentage of students that chose to go abroad. Since 2004, over three thousand DU students have studied abroad in over 57 nations.
