3. PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
• Shell veneers are made from thinly sliced pieces of shell nacre glued together flattened to form continuous sheets.
• Standard size - Length - 240mm, Width - 140mm, Thickness - 0.1mm-0.15mm - 0.004" - 0.005" .
• This material is mainly used for overlay, where it is fixed directly onto the surface and finishing coat is then built up
to level.
• It lends it self to many applications including architectural, signwriting, furniture making, musical instruments,
jewelery, fishing lures and many more.
• Some of the characteristics include flexibility, it can be bent to a great degree especially when coated with flexible
resin or spray system such as aliphatic Polyurethane.
• Shell veneers can be cut with a sharp knife or even scissors. When cut with scissors it is advisable to apply adhesive
tape to top side which is removed when the material is fixed to surface, alternatively it can be coated with resin or
spray.
• Shell veneers can also be cut using various types of CNC cutting machines such as laser, water jet etc..
• Very cost effective when compared with solid shell material.
• Due to the very thin nature of this material it is advisable to color coat back side of veneers
4. How to cut and glue
Shell veneers
• For manual cutting, you should cover both sides of the
veneer with low-tack masking tape (that you can easily
remove
• later) and use a very sharp pair of scissors, X-Acto knife,
Stanley knife, or high-quality precision knife. If you try to
• cut the veneer without the masking tape for protection, it is
likely to break. We also recommend using a high-quality
• cutting tool; the quality of the blade and its sharpness
definitely affect the outcome.
• For intricate shapes and optimum results, consider using
high-precision devices such as laser cutter,
• diamond blade, and CNC system.
• Cut pieces can be easily glued on to wood, metal, glass,
plastic, and other materials using clear bond ("Crazy Glue"
• or "Super Glue"), epoxy resin, polyester resin, and even thin
double-sided tape. The type of gluing you should use
• depends on a number of factors, including the surface, size,
application, and final processing of your work.
• In general, however, gel-type glues work better than
common liquid-type glues.

Also known as ass's ear, the name is based on the
long, narrow and curved shape of the shell
resembling a donkey's
ear. With an average length of about 9 cm, it is
smaller than other shells, providing veneers and
laminates with a
regular, repeated pattern. Shades of light pink and
