Experiment – can we build it?
Collaboration is an ideal – but in reality…Challenge of developing specifications – editing annotations.
Drupal – gave us flexibility to prototype quickly with the dataClose collaboration - understand research needs; scholars understand technology process
Goal was to build tools so they could do as much of the content input and manipulation as possible.

- Where does scholarship stop, and publication begin- We didn’t realize early on what it would mean to become a digital publication. I thought “we’ll just freeze it!”
Wireframes….comps….more wireframes…user testing. Lots of questions raised.
Will - We’ve decided = a website.What device is it on? HTML still works!Susan - But confusion abounds – scholars don’t understand why we brought in the full text of journal articles from the outside – but they are the essays of this publication!We’re going to have to lean a bit more towards the book model.
Will – Highly designed? Keep it simple/standard. What does it feel like? How do we create a theme that is re-usable and adaptable for future pubs? - Child themesHow do we get out of the one-off Boutique approach to these?\- Susan – How much of experience of original manuscript do we bring in? How much of the research messiness do we keep and publish? What is the value to scholars of the raw work, vs. the polished, cleaned-up version?? Will – comapre to GitHub project example – importance of seeing how s.o. else got to a solution.
- Susan - Essays as research vs. Revealing the process of the research is a goal. They have a mental model of a book – beginning, end, essays, bib, and cover. We have a model of a website – click anywhere, go anywhere. Murtha – “It’s everywhere!”- How do we incorporate expected scholarly apparatus from print models? Susan - Goal is to reach a wider audience – students. Two very different audiences. Is difficult to make it clear to these different users that there are things there for them?- User testing - Concordance example ….
Susan - Digitally-native content – print publisher. Extract info, edit in Word (or, worse, on paper), and re-load. Manual process.Is there a digital solution for the editorial process?
Will - 2. Will we update? No. Locked down. Labor + citations/versioning (Susan jumps in)1.There is none. NO SEO….3. Preservation? ! Archive.org/web?!
Susan – not there – metadata schemas (TEI, LIDO etc…), Hard to choose standards when the methodology is undeterminedTEI – it got edited!We are working somewhere in between archival and publishing modes (J. Drucker).
