- 2. CHRIST: OUR HIGH PRIEST • Hebrews 7 lays the groundwork of Christ’s High Priesthood • He is the Eternal Priest whom the priesthood here on earth were modeled after • They needed to offer sacrifices daily, while Christ ended that ritual once and for all • “For the law appoints as high priests men in all their weakness; but the oath, which came after the law, appointed the Son, who has been made perfect forever.” • Hebrews 8 starts off with the statement that we have a High Priest who serves in the tabernacle of Heaven
- 3. “COEXISTANCE” OF COVENANTS • When Hebrews was written, the Temple in Jerusalem was still standing, causing a grey area wherein both the New and Old covenants coexisted • This was likely a stumbling block for many believers, both Jew and Gentile, during this time • The author here begins to separate out the two covenants piece by piece based on Christ’s High Priesthood • Christ would not be a priest here on earth (v.4) since there are already priests under the Old Covenant (besides, He’s from the wrong tribe, anyway!) • “In fact the ministry Jesus has received is as superior to theirs as the covenant of which he is mediator is superior to the old one, since the new covenant is established on better promises.” (v.6)

TYPES AND SHADOWS • Verse 5 gives us a further picture into the relationship between two coexisting covenants • The Temple of the old Jerusalem is a shadow of the Temple that has always existed in Heaven • Moses was specifically given blueprints to the Tabernacle which then became the rough basis for the Temple. • In the same way, the covenant that the earthly Temple coincided with is a shadow of the covenant that the Jesus is now mediating for us at the right hand of the Father
- 5. THE OBSOLETE COVENANT • “If there had been nothing wrong with that first covenant, no place would have been sought for another” • Why was that first covenant wrong? Verse 6 gives us a clue • The promises that the Old Covenant were built on for the most part were specific to the nation of Israel, and were based on action. • In contrast to the Sermon on the Mount, Jewish Law doesn’t prohibit thought, only action. • The only thing the Old Covenant could protect you from was your actions
- 6. THE NEW AND IMPROVED • Conversely, the New Covenant that Christ established is extended to every nation tribe and tongue, and is predicated on the renewal of our minds • The first words people heard from God right before Jesus’ ministry was “repent”, which in Greek literally means “change the way you think”! • This New Covenant in Christ’s blood writes God’s law on our hearts and our minds instead of stone tablets, as He said to Jeremiah in 600BC. • It guarantees the redemption of our minds as well as our souls, which allows us to freely minister to those around us! • Ultimately, Christ is the High Priest over a nation of priests (which was the goal from the start *see Exodus 20:5-7*) • So, saints, how does that make you feel?
