Value, identity, and glory
1.
2. HOW WE OFTENTIMES DESCRIBE VALUE
When we as Christians discuss our value, we oftentimes don’t completely
see our own created value
• That is, we see an incomplete picture of who we are and who God created
us to be: in relationship with Him and with other people around us.
• In trying to avoid pride, we lose sight of how God values us
• The problem is that we avoid the sin but don’t grasp our complete identity
in Christ because of that lost vision
• Too often we devalue ourselves by giving the temptation the enemy places
in our life more sway over who we are than who God sees us to be!
3. ECONOMICS 101
• In economics, how do we typically define the value of a good or
service?
• A typical definition for value is to define it by the price paid by the
purchaser for that good or service
• Using that definition, wouldn’t it be safe to say that God values us
very highly indeed?
• The value he placed on our freedom was by paying the highest
price ever seen: Jesus Himself!
4. VALUE, LOVE, AND GLORY
God was not duped into overpaying for something or someone of little to
no value.
• Remember, Jesus endured the cross for the joy set before Him! He knew the
exact value of what he was paying for, and laid Himself down in spite of the
tremendous cost to him.
• The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be
one even as we are one, I in them and you in me, that they may become
perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them
even as you loved me. (John 17:22, 23; emphasis mine)
• And that’s before the Cross!
5. GREATEST COMMANDMENTS ACCORDING TO JESUS
• Most of us know the first one: love the Lord your God with all your
heart, soul, mind, and strength
• How about the second?
• Love our neighbors like ourselves
• Once we begin to see our own created value and love who
God made us to be, we can love others as God loves us:
unconditionally and pointing them towards a relationship with
our Dad.
6. VALUE AND IDENTITY ARE INTERTWINED
• Now that we see our value according to God’s system, we can step
more fully into our complete identity in Christ
• We’re saved, loved, and valued by the Father, so let’s walk out what we’ve
experienced and spread the love of the Father to everyone around us
• “Why do we have the helmet of salvation? Why is it here? [on your head] …
The helmet is given to encapsulate the reality of a believer’s identity, so it
cannot be torn away by lies.” --Todd White
• Regardless of what the past has thrown at you or the enemy is speaking to
you in the present to make you doubt your identity, YOU ARE VALUED BY
THE FATHER
• If you ever forget that, just look at the cross: Christ showed the world how
highly He and His Father valued our freedom, so let’s never take that for
granted.
7. HOW DOES THAT MAKE YOU FEEL, SAINTS?
• You are accepted in the beloved, included in the
fellowship of the Godhead, and valued above anything
this world has to offer
• What should our response to that look like? And, more
importantly, how can we value those around us the
way God values us?
