2. Let’s review what we learned during
our fetal pig dissection!
Anatomy of our pigs:
• External
• Oral Cavity and Pharynx
• Thoracic Cavity
• The Respiratory System
• Heart
• Digestive System

3. External Anatomy
• Anterior is toward the cephalic (head) end of the pig.
• Posterior is toward the caudal (tail) end of the pig.
• Superior is toward the dorsal (back) surface.

4. Oral Cavity and Pharynx
Make sure you can identify the
hard palate, soft palate, and
the epiglottis.

5. The Thoracic Cavity
The thoracic cavity contains parts of the respiratory system, the
circulatory system, the endocrine system, the immune system
and the skeletal system.
Be sure you can identify
these parts:
• Heart
• Lungs
• Ribs
• Diaphragm
• Larynx
• Esophogus

6. The Heart
It is important that you know the parts of the heart. Don’t forget
to check out the slides about arteries and veins!
Arteries
• Do they go towards
or away from the
heart??
Veins
• Do they go towards
or away from the
heart?? Quit
11. Circulatory System
Be able to identify these
major veins and arteries.
Make sure you understand
Quit
that these pictures are from
two very different parts of
the pigs body!
12. The Reproductive System
As I’m sure you’re aware, there are a lot of differences between
the male and female reproductive systems. You are responsible
for knowing these differences and being able to tell if a fetal pig is
male or female!

15. So that’s it! Wasn’t that
cool?
Make sure you go over all of the
systems that were covered by
this presentation. Don’t forget
to know the basic functions of
the parts as well!

My name is Emily Jones and I am in the College of Education,
with a major in chemistry and a minor in biology. I decided to
base my interactive PowerPoint presentation on the fetal pig
dissection that I did in my introductory biology course. I chose
this because the dissection is very interactive and teaches the
students a lot, and it is a lot of fun. I set the presentation up as if
I were a high school biology teacher and this would be a
resource for my students. The main goal of the presentation is
that it would serve as a guide to help the students prepare for a
practical examination.
