1. Reflection Essay : My Family Structure
A famous author Anthony Brandt once said, "Other things may change us, but we start and end
with the family." Family plays an important role in my day to day life. I am twenty years old born
and raised in the Coachella Valley. It is essential to examine ones' family to understand and to take in
count what a family consists of. I have lived a while now and never have stopped and asked myself
"How is my family?" I have always just thought well this is my family and that is it. Examining a
person's own family helps a person get to know the family structure and what the family constitutes
by. All families are unique in their way of family structure, family governance, communication,
parental relationship. Furthermore, I will be talking about my family my own family structure, life
goals, communication style, and family governance.
My family structure began with me and my mom. My mother had me as a single mother. My mother
had a hard time conceiving a baby until she had me. I was born at six months weighed two
pounds. I was not given any chance at surviving. When taken out of the womb the doctors were
just waiting to sign the time of death. My heart did not stop luckily. I have been healthy ever
since. My biological father was never in the picture. My mom met my step father when I was four
years old. My sister in a way wasn't even planned. My mom had a hard time having me she had a
lot of physical problems like toxemia etc. The doctors told her she could not have another child
or she could die. Therefore, my sister was kind of a mistake I know it sounds mean but it is kind
of funny to me to when I think about it. My sister was born when I was six years old. My mom
got married with my now father. Me and him got along from the beginning. I believe my family
origin has not changed. I can say my family form is a form of a nuclear family.
Life goal and philosophies are always different in families. My family is Mexican so the culture
helped shaped my life goal and philosophies. My mom always says to never forget my traditions or
culture. My mother says it is essential it helps build a person's identity. Furthermore, my parents
have instilled in me to be who I am. If I want to achieve things I must set my mind to it. A

2. The Family Of A Family Ecomap
A family ecomap provides us with useful, visible information that allows us to see the immediate
family, support systems and stressors (Kaakinen, Coehlo, Steele, Tabacco, & Hanson, 2015). A
family ecomap was created for ED to demonstrate where support and stress comes from and develop
tragedies to improve the support and decrease the stressors. By utilizing the genogram for this family
we see the nuclear family consists of husband, wife, and two children. ED and BD both work full
time jobs and state they will not be able to retire until they are in their seventies. They have two
grown children that live independently from them. Their son lives in another state and is married
with one child. Their daughter lives locally and is remarried and has two children. The relationship
between their son and themselves is strong, where the relationship with their daughter is tense. The
sibling relationship is weak. ED states the primary reason her relationship with her daughter and her
grandkids are strained are related to her new husband. ED states that her husband does not like him
and they both believe he is using their daughter. She further states that when her daughter had left
her first husband she never dated and lived with them. She moved into her own home with the
grandchildren and after a few more years she meet her now husband. Stated that after he came along
the grandchildren and her daughter rarely see her or talk to her. She states she works from home and

3. Relationship Between Friends And Family
Evaluate critically the relationship between friends and families in modern social life
The line which separates the family from the friends has become more and more, undistinguishable
within the modern and social life of today. 'I have another family who are my friends ... I don't
really subscribe to the definition of family as people that you're related to by blood or by marriage'
(Spencer & Pahl. 2006. P.108), this gives us evidence that the ties between friends and family
have become less rigid in the modern social life. The modern nuclear family has drastically
changed over the past 50 years; women are becoming less reliant on men and pursuing carriers
rather than settling down with a family. Children are being born into a broken home or with just a
mother or father. To begin with, this essay will define the difference between 'friends' and 'family'
and then scrutinize the relationship between friends and family and how these ties are continuing to
modify, within the modern world. This essay will also discuss the difference between 'given' and
'chosen' relationships and make note of how suffusion comes into play. I will also discuss how
postmodernism and mobility come into play within the relationship between friends and families
within the modern social life. Throughout this I will make reference to the work of Pahl and Spencer
and scrutinize their work, with help of a variety of different authors, such as, Wilkinson and Smart.
There are many different definitions of

4. Family Nursing Essay
Family nursing is not all about patient centered care, it is focused on the needs of the family as a
whole (Nursing theory). The main goal for family nursing is to improve any health concerns by
assessing the needs, problems, influences, and strentghs of the family (Journal of nursing). There are
four four types of approaches to family nursing. The four types of approaches to family nursing
are, family as context, family as client, family as system, and family as component of society (the
book). The purpose of this paper is to define, discuss, and give examples of the four types of
approaches to family nursing.
Family as Context
Family as context is the first approach that focuses on the patient while the family is in background.
The family...show more content...
Family as System
Family as system is the third approach which focuses the whole family as the client pg (10). The
way the families interact with each other will have influence on the nursing intervention (pg 10).
There was a female patient that was diagnosed with terminal cancer in her mid–thirties. She was
married with two children. When her two teenaged children found out the cancer was terminal, they
broke into tears. The husband was in denial. He could not come to terms with the fact that his
young wife had a couple months to live. I had to wait on the family interactions before deciding
which nursing intervention to choose. I played the councelor role to the family so they can express
their feelings. The husband was able to accept her diagnosis and he was her caregiver at home
during her last couple of months.
Family as Component of Society
Family as component of society is the fourth approach that view families as a part of a variety of
instituitions to society (pg 12). The family as a unit communicate with other organizations to
receive, exchange, or give communication and services (p.12). A community nurse pays particular
attention on the interface between families and community agencies (pg 12). I had a patient that was

5. Family Secrets and the Influence Non–disclosure Has on
Communication within the Family Unit
Secrets come in many forms, from white–lies to maximum disclosure; one secret can change family
dynamics for a long time. The change in the family dynamic does not always have to be negative,
it can be positive as well. Either way a secret or a series of secrets can impact how people feel
about, view, and communicate with someone after information is disclosed to others.
In the textbook, Interpersonal Communication: Putting Theory into Practice, family secrets are
defined as "events or information that family members hide from one another or from outsiders"
(Solomon & Theiss, 2013). Some secrets can be hidden from all but one person, at times some
members of the family may know a secret while others do not, or the whole family may know
something and keep it from outsiders. Such secrets can be kept because of fear, guilt,
embarrassment, anger, or sorrow which may occur. More often than not, some of the secrets end up
coming out later on down the road, which may or may not make things more difficult for family
members to process.
Another reason family secrets may occur is because of the lack of closeness or trust within the
family unit. If a family is fairly distant, the way boundaries are set up may make it difficult for one
to feel safe disclosing something to a family member or the entire family. For families with higher
levels of openness, there may be fewer boundaries which make

6. The Human Family Tree Chapter Summaries
The topic of where man originated from is often argued between many individuals. This video
"The Human Family Tree" cleared up many questions I had about where we all came from. I
sometimes see things online saying that a few centuries from now all races will intermingle and
this is what we will soon look like. The video states that technically there is no such thing as race.
Race is a modern idea that was not used back when ancient societies were one. It is crazy to think
somehow we are all related. This idea that we have all originated in Africa came as a surprise
considering the physical differences between all the different cultures that came of the original one
in Africa. When you think about all that goes on in the world today and consider the hate that has
occurred in history it makes no sense considering we are all related. The video mentions how

Now in the world there are thousands of different language spoken. The video mentioned how our
physical looks changed but I was interested to know how each different culture was established.
There had to of been an aspect that washed out the previous language and culture for the motivation
to form a new one. The video presented people from backgrounds including Spanish, Native
American, Chinese, and African. When they brought together the hundred of people they swabbed
at the festival in Queens, NY each person was given a flag representing their furthest lineage. All
these people from different walks of color were brought together because they shared one single tiny
gene. I thought it was absolutely incredible and very moving. Today we live in a world for
centuries we have recognized differences like race, religion, and culture as sometimes including
negative aspects. Dr. Spencer Wells was able to search deep into DNA and fine resemblances

7. The Maternal Side Of My Family Essay
INTRODUCTION What makes a family, a family? Surely, it is comprised of more than just
people who share the same genes. A family consists of love, care, respect, and people who admire
one another. Family is not always people who share the same last name, at times family is people
who have known you before you were born, or people who you have met throughout the years and
formed a relationship. Family is made of people who laugh with, cry with, smile, fuss, argue, get
back together, and do it all over again. Family is about forming a bond between generations, and
seeing the young grow. It's about making history and realizing, just how far we have come. In this
paper, I will be discussing the maternal side of my family. I will discuss our traditions, beliefs,
values, strengths and what makes our family, a family.
Family Composition Charles Marshall Sr. married Irene Holland and through their marriage, they
had three boys, one of them being Charles Marshall Jr., my paternal grandfather. Today, my paternal
great–grandmother Irene Holland is ninety–six years old and has lived longer than her husbands, and
all her children. McClellan and Bessie Johnson married in 1943, and spent seventy– one years
together. Throughout that time, they had thirteen children, eleven girls, two boys, and then adopted
another girl, giving them fourteen children in total. Their second oldest daughter Cecelia Johnson is
my paternal grandmother. Charles Marshall Jr. and Cecelia

8. I Am Proud With My Family
As one of eight children, I am consistently humbled by the experiences in my early environment.
My siblings and I shared clothing, toys, bedrooms, and even beds. It seemed I always had less
than my friends. As the second oldest, I had responsibilities and to watch over and care for my
younger siblings. I feel blessed for growing up in a big family because I learned not only how to be
patient and thankful with less, but how to serve the younger and weaker.
Every weekend on the way to work in the hospital I am reminded of the tragedy that occurred a
little over four years ago. I can recall coming from school that day vividly picturing a red
ambulance in our front yard and firefighters dousing the scorched remains of the place I called
home. That was the first time I remember thinking to myself that I may never see my family
again. I learned the importance of counting possessions as lost when our house vanished in that
fire. More importantly, my parents instilled in me a deep understanding that no treasure on this
earth can compare to the infinite value of a human being. I carry this principle with me in all
aspects of my life. As a result, I diligently seek a healthy personal relationship with every precious
life. I believe that this and similar early experiences have not only fostered the person I am today,
but have also led to my interests in medicine. It is clear to me that I want to commit my life to serving
others, counting each more important than myself.

9. Family Genogram is Similar to the Family Tree
Family Genogram
A genogram is a tool similar to a family tree that is used to track family history and family
relationships. Genograms contain basic information such as: names, genders, birth/death dates,
illnesses, social behaviors, achievements, education, family relationships, social relationships and
emotional relationships (Genogram Guide, 2009). This paper will summarize finding after
completing a three generation genogram of this author's family history beginning with the maternal
(Johnson) and paternal (West) grandparents. The general traits that were analyzed was the family
relationships, social disorders and medical issues associated with the family.
Medical Issues
The Johnson and West family health issues is mainly hypertension or high blood pressure (HBP) for
both male and female. An individual with a blood pressure of 140/90 or greater is considered
elevated. It is believed by the second generation, which consist of this author's mother and mother's
siblings, that hypertension was inherited from the first generation. The first generation consist of this
author's paternal and maternal grandparents. The third generation consist of this author plus this
author's aunts' and uncles' children. The third generation tend to be in better health than the first and
second generation. The third general do not have any high blood pressure problems. Several of the
men and women of the second generation are obese. Obesity is a factor that can cause HBP. Increased

My Family Heritage
Family Defined
The word family has changed so much in the past century. A family back in the 1950's was probably
considered a husband, wife, and one or more children. Times have changed and families have
become much different. The Interpersonal Communication: Relating to Others book defines family
as a, "Unit made up of any number of persons who live in relationship with one another over time
in a common living space who are usually, but not always, united by marriage and kinship" (Beebe,
Beebe & Redmond, 243). Families can be broken up into five different types. The first is the

dental hygienist. My grandma "Lo" is the genealogy nut in our family. She has searched for
birthdates, marriage licenses, and other documents of her grandparents. I called grandma Lo to get
some information on my great–grandparents and family stories. I found out I was part Norwegian
and I never even knew it! Grandma Lo's parents were Edward Mulcahy and Olga Shermoen. Her
father Ed was born on April 15, 1880 in Minneapolis, MN. Ed worked as a claim agent for the Great
Northern Railroad in the twin cities. Olga was born on March 15, 1888 in Hawley, MN. She also
worked for the Great Northern Railroad as a matron. Edward was 100% Irish while Olga was 100%
Norwegian. This makes my grandma Lorraine 50% Irish & 50% Norwegian. My grandpa Bill was
adopted in Minneapolis so his genealogy is unknown. He was told by his adopted parents that he
was mostly Irish. If we pretended Bill was 100% Irish, this would make my mom 75% Irish and 25%
Norwegian.

12. My Family Of The Family Tree
I derive most of my identity from my Mother's side of the family tree, so this autobiography will be
a little lopsided; much like my personality. My maternal grandmother's family came from Sonder
Stenderup of Jutland, Denmark and my maternal grandfather's family is of German descent. The
original family name was Gron, however my great grandfather change the surname to Green in
order to sound more American. My mother's grandparents came from Jutland, Denmark in 1905
and my grandmother was born in Racine in 1920. The only characteristic I inherited from that
side of the family is my punctuality, my outspokenness, and my ability to drink. I grew up in a
three bedroom, one bathroom house with my mother and four brothers along with a
neighborhood full of kids (mostly boys). I have three older brothers; 10, 9, and 8 years older and
one brother who is three years younger than me. My older brothers all joined the service as they
turned of age, therefore it created a split upbringing for me. Up until I was 8, I was treated as the
baby sister and my younger brother and I were constantly dragged to my older brother's friends'
houses. My mother worked quite a bit, therefore, my eldest brother was in charge of the rest of the
clan, however, he usually delegated one of the other two brothers to watch me my younger brother.
Which is why I learned to play poker at a very young age, even though I'm still not good at bluffing
my opponents. After I turned eleven, all of my older

The Family Tree
Our story begins in Greece, many years ago. A baby was born in the city of Athens. Her name was
Oakley. Oakley had brown, long hair with big hazel eyes. Her parents adored her.
Eighteen years passed by and there was a big riot going on in Athens in protest of Zeus letting Hades
capture Persephone. Zeus wanted to teach the citizens of Athens a lesson by sending them terrible
storms. Innocent Oakley didn't know about the threats from Zeus, but her parents did.
Her parents didn't want Oakley to fear of the storm coming their way, so they didn't tell her. Her
parents also didn't want to leave Athens themselves, they knew they didn't have the energy to do
so. In result, they had to try and get Oakley to move by herself, without letting her know of the
great dangers ahead. Oakley was in her room, sewing a new blanket for her bed. Her mother
called for her to come downstairs. So of course, she made her way downstairs and saw her parents
sitting on the couch, with a depressed look on their face. "What's wrong?" said Oakley. "Honey,
we have some news for you. We are sending you off to Corfu." said her mother. Oakleys face
turned red. She seemed like she had smoke coming out of her ears. "Are you trying to get rid of
me?" said Oakley. "What did I ever do to you?" "Nothing, nothing," said her father. "This is for
your own safety darling." "What is going on? I'm completely happy here in Athens! You must tell
me why you are shipping me off to another city!" said

14. Essay on My Family's Ancestry
Gathering research about my family and its history turned out to be an interesting and insightful
opportunity, through which I learned much more than I expected. When I started this project, I
knew that I would not be able to find as much useful information on the Internet as some of my
peers. In effect, I realized that I would have to rely on other primary resources such as my parents
and grandparents to reveal the story of my ancestry to me. After I had interviewed them, my family
history became much clearer to me. More than 2 millennia ago, around the 3rd century BC, a group
of Tamil–speaking people from present–day South India migrated to the nearby island of Sri Lanka.
Among these people, known today as "Sri Lankan Tamils", are my...show more content...
The Peninsula has a hot, monsoonal tropical climate characterized by a dry season from February
to October and a wet season from October to January. Because of the monsoons, the region is
humid and averages three feet of rain each year, which is relatively low compared to the rest of the
island. The climate of the region allows for many crops to be grown including many varieties of
fruits and vegetables.
While interviewing my parents and grandparents, I learned about many customs and aspects of
the Sri Lankan Tamil culture. Sri Lankan Tamils are devotees of the Shaiva sect of Hinduism,
mainly worshipping the lord Shiva. The three main cultural festivals celebrated in the area are
Thai Pongal (beginning of the harvest), Chittrai Pongal (Tamil New Year), and Deepavali (Hindu
Festival of Lights). In addition, pujas (religious rituals) are performed for different occasions, such
as the death day of an ancestor or the celebration of a certain Hindu deity. It was also a custom to
ask the village astrologer for advice on certain decisions, such as the name of a newborn child.
Paternal Great–Grandparents In the early 1900's, Kadirasaipillai and Vairavipillai Kandappar, my
paternal grandmother's parents, were born in the village of Puloly, Northern Province, Sri Lanka.

15. My Family Has Shaped The Way I View Essay
My family is an extremely important aspect of my life; my family has shaped the way I view the
world, how I treat other people, and how I see myself. The genogram I created helps clarify the
relationships throughout my family because like many other families, mine is diverse and
complicated. On one side of my family, there are many happy and successful marriages, whereas
the other side of my family has more divorces and marital conflicts. It is also interesting to observe
how I am closer with my relatives on my mom's side of the family, and my relatives on my dad's
side of the family are geographically and emotionally distant. Studying family relationships is
significant for understanding certain patterns, and establishing an idea of self–concept. Creating a
genogram of my family shows the emotional connections, interactions, and family patterns
throughout three generations.
Relationships
My grandparent's gender roles were very traditional; the wives were responsible for the housework
and caring for the children, while the husbands were responsible for providing the family income.
Many of the gender roles between my mother and father became more equal, my parents shared the
housework, taking care of the children, and providing income. My parents, aunts and uncle's
marriages are more egalitarian and many of the gender roles are interchangeable. In the past,
especially my grandparent's generation, the women were the primary care takers of the house and
children, while the men

Doing what my parents tell me to do is just one of many reasons why I am a rock of support for
my family. Not only do I support my parents, but I also support my younger cousins and brother.
As an eldest brother and cousin, I feel I must be a good example for the young ones. There are
numerous methods of showing my cousins and brother support. One main way is by providing
advice on making the right choices. For example my brother had a problem at school with one of
his classmates. As a mature and responsible older brother, I advised him to use the non–violent
approach. I told him to go discuss the problem and try to resolve it peacefully. My brother then
asked me why he shouldn't fight his classmate. I explained how violence is the answer to
anything. I advised him to first talk to his classmate in a professional manner. If then things get
out of hand, I told him to let the teacher know the situation. In the end, my brother didn't need to
get the teacher involved. In fact, their conflict was resolved by talking through with each other. I
also am very supportive of my little cousins. One way I help them out is by tutoring them once in
a while. They come over to my house and I assist them with their school work. Not only I help my
cousins with their homework, but I also support them recreationally. I play various sports and
activities with them. As their older cousin/brother, I feel I should be a good role model to follow. I
am also known for being there

17. Genus Homo
The genus Homo should comprise of species who share a most recent common ancestor and should
be more closely related to one another than to species of another genus. Many characteristics can be
used to define the genus Homo, such as morphology, cognitive ability and genetics, however some
are more suitable than others. When using morphology to determine the species included in the
genus Homo, characteristics such as the bony labyrinth and limb proportions can be considered,
which can be a strong indicator of the species posture and main mode of locomotion. The bony
labyrinth may be an appropriate structure to study because data is obtained from the crania which is
more definitively assigned to species than isolated limb bones. However, evidence...show more

This is because the cranial capacity is fairly easy to measure with an absolute brain size of 600cc
being used as a defining feature of the genus Homo. However, some early Homo species had
smaller brains than Australopiths (Morton, 2016), suggesting it may not be appropriate to
consider cranial capacity alone, particularly as cranial fossil remains can be problematic when
often found damaged. Endocranial casts can also be used to infer whether a species had
developed spoken language, a feature used to distinguish Homo species. However, definitive
evidence for the development of spoken language is poor and can't be reliably interpreted from the
appearance of endocranial casts (Wood & Collard, 1999). Tool use may also be connected with an
increased cognitive ability and can be used to determine species within the genus Homo. However,
stone tool deposits dating 2.6–2.3 million years old have been found in East Africa (Wood &
Collard, 1999), linking them to later species of Australopiths, suggesting this may be an unreliable
characteristic to use. Examining dental evidence can be an appropriate method in defining the genus
Homo because teeth are commonly preserved and an individuals diet can be inferred. It is suggested
that members of the genus Homo should have smaller posterior teeth compared to Australopithecus
(AntГіn & Snodgrass, 2012). In addition to this, research suggests that early Homo had a more
generalised diet than Australopithecus due to evidence of more complex microwear (AntГіn &
Snodgrass, 2012). However, dental evidence may not be the most appropriate, since microscopic
damage to tooth enamel may be confused with damage from chewing

Cultural identity is defined as the sense or feeling of belonging to a group. I connect my cultural
identity to my immediate family. My immediate family consists of my parents, two younger sisters,
and myself. Each one of us has significant values that have been instilled in one another. I believe
that they play a large role in making me who I am today. Coming from a large, Sicilianfamily, the
importance of love, loyalty, and support has always been prominent. My Sicilian culture has
always been existent in my life, however I do not fully connect with it on many levels. For
example, tattoos are not very accepted by my extended family. My father, mother, and I have
several visible tattoos. When my grandparents and a few other family members noticed, they
were immediately disgusted. They could not see that we were the same people we were before

Family Reflection

I have fond memories of growing up with love and compassion, by the people who I was
surrounded with. The feeling of...show more content...
The people may be different, but, the bonds will grow and develop in our existence.
I remember the feeling of completeness and security I had growing up with my mom, dad,
grandparents, and extended family members. I always felt like I belonged and was accepted for
me. People are not perfect, sometimes in actions and words, but, knowing the unconditional love
that we are surrounded with by our families keeps us grounded in our true selves. Now that I am
older, I feel the same security that I experienced while growing up. A familiarity of comfort that
brings me to a place of peace and security. My own comfort zone where I am loved, happy, cared for
and needed.
A family can be defined in many ways, but the common denominator in all is the love and
fulfillment one gets by being surrounded by family members. Families can sometimes be at odds
with each other, but the strain of this type of relationship usually creates an upsetting feeling to the
people involved. People want others to rely on, talk to, do things with, share, love, embrace, and
be part of. No matter what the family dynamic is the qualities the word family has will remain the
same, as time goes by, and life evolves once again for every person living their
