Gattaca Theme
In the visual text, Gattaca, directed by Andrew Niccol, we're introduced to a futuristic society where
people strive for the best set of genes in hopes of creating a 'perfect' society. The main character,
Vincent, is classified as an invalid. He overcomes many obstacles in hopes of fulfilling his dream of
going to space. In doing so, his actions helped us understand the theme that striving for the best sets
of genes risks suppressing individuality and success. Aspects of this include him proving that
'perfect' genes doesn't guarantee success, not conforming to maintain individuality and determination
and being One way that Vincent was able to communicate the theme, was through overcoming his

Even after being discriminated and marginalised from society by his 'low' quality genes, Vincent
never gave in. SInce the genetically engineered individuals form the society's elite, parents wish
to select the best versions of their genes to create the 'perfect' offspring, this suppresses
individuality as the society still ends up conformed to the rules of a striving organisation towards
a 'perfect' society. This would result in no individuality within a society which would mean that
the society could never evolve as there will be no one to oppose or notice the flaws in this
'perfect' society. Vincent becomes the exception when he didn't accept being treated as an
inferior the way Irene had. She accepted the fact that she would never accomplish her dream of
space travel and so, she accepted her role in Gattaca. This is shown through her obedience to
follow any order given to her by the director. VIncent's achievements showed that invalids can be
just as good as valids. He showed Irene that he was here "to show that it's possible" for those who
are marginalised to be just as good. These accomplishments were reached only because Vincent
didn't conform to the society by taking risks that involved being suspected as a murderer and as an

Gattaca
Andrew Niccol's Gattaca portrays a discriminatory society in which status and quality of life is
determined solely by a DNA profile. However, it is against this oppressive regime that Vincent
Freeman shines, as Niccol conveys the importance of maintaining individuality В– in those qualities
which deem his protagonist unique. Throughout the film Niccol criticises those who conform and
contribute to this, while simultaneously he praises those valids who do rebel in order to emphasise
how pivotal it is that the human race does not succumb to lead the existence portrayed by this "not to

Gattaca is a science–fiction thriller movie, directed by Andrew Niccol. It presents a story of the

before they were born. Even though Vincent starts to work here as a janitor due to his In–Validity, he
keeps trying to get his dream by finding a "borrowed ladder, Jerome Morrow". Vincent's dream
leads him to achieved as well as or better than many people who have been genetically engineered
because of his human spirit. It is one of the things why it is important to leave nothing programmed.

the child's abilities to chance is something stupid and they would not agree of that. However, the

Just when Vincent was about to be sent to undertake a mission on Titan, one of the managers is
assassinated in his office. The police went through the whole company with a fine–tooth comb and
found one of Vincent's eyelashes. After a fast analysis, they found out that it belonged to a man
who had worked long ago for the company as a cleaner but who had disappeared years before. The
mysterious man was the number one suspect and his picture was everywhere. But no one matched it
with the wrong Jerome. No one but the lieutenant who was no other than his brother, Anton. For
him, that was hard to believe. This brother who had always been inferior to him was then far above

Jerome is lucky enough to have superior genes, thus giving him the opportunity to achieve his full
potential. Throughout his whole life he was expected to succeed at everything he was faced with,
and being an Olympic swimmer, he was expected to win but "for the genetically superior, success
is easier to attain. But is by no means guaranteed. After all, there is no gene for fate." But what does
this prove? Genes don't change personality or fate, they just allocate your future for you in Gattaca.

Andrew Niccol's movie Gattaca is a film established in 1997, based around the idealistic view of
perfection. This film has a variety of underlying themes and concepts based solely around
discrimination and DNA. This film incorporates science fiction and crime fiction to introduce the
issue of genetic manipulation in attempt to eradicate human nature. For my response I have chosen
to do a visual to demonstrate my understanding and knowledge of the films significance in relation
to modern society. This piece was influenced by the films techniques and key elements such as
symbolism that is used in the most forthright way. I have used colour, quotes and symbols from the
text to reflect on the importance of the films aspects whilst doing is a new way. The film Gattaca
represents a world submerged in a lack of humanity and individuality due to the obsession with

future world. The first shot of discrimination was near the start of the film, where we find a shot of

In fact, both these men run perilously close to becoming like Anton – robotic and devoid of emotion.
It is Anton who provides the real paradox here by ruthlessly investigating his own brother's
``invalidity'' and, in so doing, demonstrates that genetics does not necessarily correlate with one's
humanity.
Indeed, it is Irene who, from the outset, seems to be more in touch with the natural world towards
which Vincent is striving to return. Note the setting where she lives; rolling surf, pristine white sand,
the warm light within in which she is constantly bathed, her disappointment with Vincent's supposed
``perfection'', her fascination with the sunrise, her ability to notice the change in his eyes after he
discards his contact lenses when most people can only recognise human differences by a DNA test.
Irene's costume and hair are much softer, feminine and distinctively individual when she is away

director is killed and he carelessly loses an eyelash at the scene, which puts Vincent/Jerome at the
scene. Certain that they know the murderer's ID, but unable to track down the former Vincent, the
police start to close in, with extra searches, and new gene tests. With the once in a lifetime launch
only days away, Vincent must avoid arousing suspicion, while passing the tests, evading the police,
and not knowing whom he can trust.
But as the film come to an end you could see Vincent's valid perfect world was coming to a
discrete stop by his brother trying to convict him of the fraud at Gattaca. Vincent unwilling tells
Anton that it is to far now and that he has beaten the system to let him fly to space. All of Vincent's
and Jerome's effort and hardship been put into this launch, and he would never let his own brother
which was a genetically engineered male stop his path to his life long dream. Jerome shows how
elitist the valid are and how they look down on
