                      1
Introduction

- My goal is to win the Olympic Windsurfing Gold Medal competing for New
Zealand at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, Brazil.

- This goal has been my driving force for the past 16 years and my absolute focus is
on developing my performance to achieve this target.

- Over the next four years three very important steps need to be taken to achieve
    this aim.

1. Qualify New Zealand the right to compete at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games in
   Mens Windsurfing.
2. Gain selection to represent New Zealand in Men’s Windsurfing at the 2016 Rio
   Olympic Games.
3. Developed a very strong, refined program that is backed up by an equally strong
   and refined team.

- This proposal is to request your assistance towards the 2016 Rio Olympic Games
with my commitment to do everything in my power to deliver on my goal and in
the process add as much value as possible to our partnership.

                                                                                         2

Equipment

- The Olympics should present the best athletes, on the best equipment, in a
showcase for the very best performances in sport.

- The Neil Pryde RS: X is driven from the belief that the Olympics, as the pinnacle of
nearly all major sporting achievements, should also be the pinnacle of
    achievement in windsurfing.

- The RS:X was chosen as the Olympic windsurfing equipment for both men and
women by ISAF in November 2004.

- It made its Olympic debut at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and was a great
success, the concept will again be used at the 2012 London Olympics.

- The RS:X can be raced in winds varying between 3 - 30 knots.

- The board begins to “plane” in 8 knots of wind and can reach speeds in excess of
    30 knots.

- When planing, the board lifts out of the water like a water ski and speed increases
    dramatically.

- The RS:X is a One Design class with all the equipment supplied by Neil Pryde and
each piece manufactured to tight manufacturing tolerances.

                                                                                           9

Olympics

- Sailing has been an Olympic sport since 1900.

- The 2016 Olympic Sailing Competition will be contested in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

- The maximum number of sailors is 380

- There are 10 Olympic sailing events - 5 for men and 4 for women and one mixed
    class.

- Separate events for men and women were introduced at the 1988 Olympic Sailing
    Competition.

- The most successful male Olympic sailor of all time is Ben Ainslie from Great
Britain who has won one sIlver in 1996 and four gold medals in 2000, 2004, 2008
    and 2012.

- The most successful female Olympic sailor is Alessandra Sensini (Windsurfer) from
Italy who has won four medals - gold in 2000, silver in 2008 and bronze in 1996
    and 2004.

                                                                                        14
Physical

- Windsurfing is a very physical sport which was has been pushed further when
unlimited “pumping” was introduced following the 1992 Olympics.

- Pumping the sail creates artificial wind and can greatly increase the sailors speed.
Sailors pump as often as they want to throughout the race to maximize their
speed regardless of the wind conditions.

- Pumping requires supreme combination of power and endurance.

- Studies have shown that, in terms of fitness, Olympic Windsurfers score within the
top 10% of the 10,000 athletes at the Olympic Games. To be competitive,
therefore, sailors must be supremely fit.

- However, windsurfing is still a finesse sport that also requires an excellent
command of racing tactics and rules not to mention the ability to sense changes
in wind direction and speed whilst maintaining balance, speed and a watchful eye
    on fellow competitors.

- All in all windsurfing in the Olympics presents a unique challenge!

                                                                                          15
History

- Windsurfing was first selected by the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) as an
event for men in the 1984 Olympic Regatta in Los Angeles.

- ISAF then added the Women's event for windsurfers to the 1992 Olympic Regatta
in Barcelona.  Windsurfing for both men and women has been represented in
    every Olympic Regatta since.

- The equipment used is always 'One Design' produced by a single manufacturer.

- Variations are strictly controlled - The aim being to ensure that the sailor with the
most talent and ability wins over the one with the most resources. That said, the
the RS:X board and rig (selected for use in 2008 and 2012 Olympic Regattas)
produced by Neil Pryde Windsurfing is the most 'high tech' craft utilized at the the
    Olympic Sailing Regatta.

- This ‘One Design’ ethos has encouraged more than 60 nations from 6 continents
to participate in the windsurfing events at Olympic Sailing Regattas.

- Olympic Medals have been won by athletes from 5 continents. Athletes from as
far afield as Fiji, Argentina, China, USA and Poland amongst many others have
stood on the podiums at Olympic Windsurfing World Championships.
-
Competition

- Races are run on the same “Trapezoid” and “Windward-Leeward” courses as all
other Olympic sailing disciplines, which incorporate upwind, reaching and
    downwind legs.

- A typical day of competition consists of 2-3 races, each lasting around 30
    minutes.

- The Olympic Regatta will consist of 11 races over 9 days (including two rest days).

                                                                                          17

  • 9. Equipment - The Olympics should present the best athletes, on the best equipment, in a showcase for the very best performances in sport. - The Neil Pryde RS: X is driven from the belief that the Olympics, as the pinnacle of nearly all major sporting achievements, should also be the pinnacle of achievement in windsurfing. - The RS:X was chosen as the Olympic windsurfing equipment for both men and women by ISAF in November 2004. - It made its Olympic debut at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and was a great success, the concept will again be used at the 2012 London Olympics. - The RS:X can be raced in winds varying between 3 - 30 knots. - The board begins to “plane” in 8 knots of wind and can reach speeds in excess of 30 knots. - When planing, the board lifts out of the water like a water ski and speed increases dramatically. - The RS:X is a One Design class with all the equipment supplied by Neil Pryde and each piece manufactured to tight manufacturing tolerances. 9

  • 14. Olympics - Sailing has been an Olympic sport since 1900. - The 2016 Olympic Sailing Competition will be contested in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil - The maximum number of sailors is 380 - There are 10 Olympic sailing events - 5 for men and 4 for women and one mixed class. - Separate events for men and women were introduced at the 1988 Olympic Sailing Competition. - The most successful male Olympic sailor of all time is Ben Ainslie from Great Britain who has won one sIlver in 1996 and four gold medals in 2000, 2004, 2008 and 2012. - The most successful female Olympic sailor is Alessandra Sensini (Windsurfer) from Italy who has won four medals - gold in 2000, silver in 2008 and bronze in 1996 and 2004. 14
  • 15. Physical - Windsurfing is a very physical sport which was has been pushed further when unlimited “pumping” was introduced following the 1992 Olympics. - Pumping the sail creates artificial wind and can greatly increase the sailors speed. Sailors pump as often as they want to throughout the race to maximize their speed regardless of the wind conditions. - Pumping requires supreme combination of power and endurance. - Studies have shown that, in terms of fitness, Olympic Windsurfers score within the top 10% of the 10,000 athletes at the Olympic Games. To be competitive, therefore, sailors must be supremely fit. - However, windsurfing is still a finesse sport that also requires an excellent command of racing tactics and rules not to mention the ability to sense changes in wind direction and speed whilst maintaining balance, speed and a watchful eye on fellow competitors. - All in all windsurfing in the Olympics presents a unique challenge! 15
  • 16. History - Windsurfing was first selected by the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) as an event for men in the 1984 Olympic Regatta in Los Angeles. - ISAF then added the Women's event for windsurfers to the 1992 Olympic Regatta in Barcelona.  Windsurfing for both men and women has been represented in every Olympic Regatta since. - The equipment used is always 'One Design' produced by a single manufacturer. - Variations are strictly controlled - The aim being to ensure that the sailor with the most talent and ability wins over the one with the most resources. That said, the the RS:X board and rig (selected for use in 2008 and 2012 Olympic Regattas) produced by Neil Pryde Windsurfing is the most 'high tech' craft utilized at the the Olympic Sailing Regatta. - This ‘One Design’ ethos has encouraged more than 60 nations from 6 continents to participate in the windsurfing events at Olympic Sailing Regattas. - Olympic Medals have been won by athletes from 5 continents. Athletes from as far afield as Fiji, Argentina, China, USA and Poland amongst many others have stood on the podiums at Olympic Windsurfing World Championships. -
  • 17. Competition - Races are run on the same “Trapezoid” and “Windward-Leeward” courses as all other Olympic sailing disciplines, which incorporate upwind, reaching and downwind legs. - A typical day of competition consists of 2-3 races, each lasting around 30 minutes. - The Olympic Regatta will consist of 11 races over 9 days (including two rest days). 17
