- Pergamum was a citadel built around a 1,000-ft tall hill (in the distance at the bottom). At the top was a temple to Zeus. A major Imperial Cult center, with a strong cult of Asclepius (whose symbol is the snake, found on coins). This was also the seat of the Roman Proconsul (regional governer)

- In the ancient world, travelers came to the town square to receive lodging from honorable citizens. It was considered a great shame to be left in the town square. Jesus’ implication here is that the Laodiceans have made so little impact on their culture that no one even recognizes him when he shows up!
