1. 1. Informa Telecoms & Media
NGCN (Next Generation Core Networks)
30th-31st March, London

2. 2. NGCN: A unique focus on the SAE/EPC
We are excited to announce details of Informa’s ‘Next Generation Core Networks’ event, which will take place on 30th-31st March, 2011 in London.
With the huge growth in smartphones and other emerging devices leveraging new networks and services, the multimedia core network is a critical element in the delivery of next generation broadband services. Building on the huge success of the LTE series by Informa Telecoms and Media, the NGCN will offer a focused and unique insight into the opportunities of the SAE/EPC niche. With the migration to the EPC already starting to take place, the event is timely, allowing for operators to stay ahead of the market and to promote successful EPC planning and output.
We are confident that the NGCN will provide a valuable forum for all the key players in the industry to discuss the complexities and opportunities surrounding the migration to a flattened, all-IP architecture for the SAE Core.
3. 3. Key Themes to be Addressed
The conference agenda has been researched in depth and addresses all of the most pertinent technical and commercial challenges for both wireless/wireline operators who are planning to upgrade to the Evolved Packet Core.

The core network transition from 2G/3G to 4G technology
 4. 4. Providing seamless QoS continuity between legacy and SAE networks
 5. 5. Maximising Revenue: Generating Effective and Sustainable Business Models
 6. 6. Addressing Security Issues
 7. 7. Fundamental operator challenges in the transition to the SAE
 8. 8. SAE Deployment Roadmaps

Specific Topics to be Addressed
Evaluating the potential of the SAE/EPC: LSTI Trial
Standardisation and Developments within SAE
How can an Intelligent Packet Network be created for making smart decisions in real-time? DPI and beyond
Examining the path for the portability of legacy voice services to the EPC
Leveraging Effective Traffic Management: What are the options available for operators to optimise and monetise the network traffic in a way that remains acceptable for the end-user?
Ensuring an intuitive service for the customer: Tailored packaging for a differentiated end-to-end user service
How can tiered services be best implemented for the ultimate user experience and to avoid network congestion?
Penetrating the unexplored: How will operators move beyond traditional services to offer innovative applications allowing them differentiate and glean increased revenue?
What benefits does the PCRF approach accrue? Creating multidimensional policies to maintain the customer experience and increase customer loyalty
How should the EPC evolve to fully realise fixed and mobile convergence?
Best Practices: Centralised vs. Distributed Network (for MME, SGW and PGW deployment)
How can operators escape ‘black box’ standards? Unleashing Innovative Interoperability
To refurbish legacy core networks or to restart through a purpose-built architecture? At what point does investing in 3G networks become less cost effective?
SAE Security mechanisms for network data and to regulate user data privacy
Examining the SAE structural options for effectively managing the backhaul bottleneck
Accommodating Femtocells in the Packet Core
What strategies can be used to mitigate the effect on OTT traffic on networks? The importance of innovative, intelligent solutions in a world of increasing competition
A future-orientated ATCA standard for Next Generation hardware
IPv6 Transition Consideration for LTE and Evolved Packet Core
9. 9. Why is the SAE/EPC so important right now?
Extracted from WHITE PAPER – TRENDS IN PACKET CORE NETWORKS:
“The role of the packet data network is increasing in importance as a key enabling technology of both mobile and fixed telecommunications networks. Not only is packet data Internet traffic increasing dramatically, but voice services will also migrate to packet data networks in the medium term as voice over IP, and mobile operators will gradually phase out legacy circuit switched core subsystems, such as GSM and UMTS CS cores”.
“A dramatic rise in demand for broadband traffic is being driven by mobile computing, increasingly sophisticated smartphone devices and user desire to access multimedia services on the move. The trend to flat rate fees, along the lines of fixed broadband services, is causing traffic volumes to rise rapidly. Over the next five years, information, entertainment and enterprise data applications will see a strong increase in market share. As a result, mobile operators need to minimise costs and improve delivery mechanisms with packet core solutions for traffic inspection, control and service dependent charging”.
Figure 1: Global mobile data revenues vs traffic, percent change 2007 & 2012
“Business benefits of a fully converged core network include reduced complexity and therefore reduced CAPEX and OPEX, reduced time to market for new services and rapid adaptation to changing needs, and new revenue development opportunities from bundling and new service creation”.
“The extent to which mobile operators will be able to react cost-effectively to market and business trends and implement the
right changes in packet core networks will also determine the success of the mobile operator businesssinthe medium to long term”.
