    succession repeatedly

   The response given to one becomes
    associated with the other

   Operant Conditioning
    › Behavior modification due to consequences
     inflicted

   Types of Operant Conditioning
    › Reinforcement - behavior is strengthened; more
     likely to happen again

    › Positive Reinforcement – following behavior with
     a pleasant stimulus

    › Negative Reinforcement - takes away a
     negative stimulus

   Originally wanted to study digestion

   Eventually taught dogs to salivate when he
    rang a bell
    › Rang bell, provided stimulus (food), and
      achieved desired reflex (salivation)
    › Dogs started to associate bell sound with food
      and began to salivate without food being
      presented

   Behaviorists saw human applications in his
    work

   Rewards for students behaving correctly

   Punishment for students behaving
    incorrectly

   Students eventually don’t need
    rewards/punishments

   Detailed schedules for days and weeks

    classroom

   Students help each other
    › Group work, behaving correctly


   Group project and project presentation

   If a student is behaving correctly they will
    be rewarded

   Or, it will be recognized and announced
    to the class

   Other students will see and learn that if
    they behave the end results will be great!

   If a student is misbehaving they will be
    punished
    › Time out, something taken away


   Or, they will be verbally reprimanded
    › Note in agenda, sent to principal, call to parents


   Other students will see this and change their
    behaviors so they don’t get into trouble
