To my horror and
the delight of
some members of
my family, my
Soccer Club that
was managed as a
Business ended-up
at the bottom of
the League.

The Decisions that Sent my Team to the Bottom
                 of the League

Pressured by the
Members, the Club’s
Board conducted a review
of the decisions that led
to the poor performance.
The following is a
summary of the findings:

What Drives Business Value and Real
                 Competitive Advantage?

Decision Number One:
To improve the cost and
profit per player and to get
a competitive advantage
over other soccer clubs, the
decision was taken to start
playing with 9 rather than
11 players.

Are the Metrics Driving your decisions correct
          and linked to your objectives?

Decision Number Two:
The second decision was
to eliminate from the
soccer team any player
that was over 25-years old
because they could not
run as fast as the younger
players.

The Holistic View of Risk and Performance

Decision Number Three:
The Defense and the Forwards
were allowed to develop their
own unsynchronized metrics that
were used to justify their
performance and bonus. Although
Defense and Forwards
independently reported an
excellent set of figures, most
games were lost.

The more inward looking your metrics the

Decision Number Four:
Players’ pay and Coach’s
pay were based on
arbitrary inward-looking
targets and not linked and
compared to the League’s
Best-In-Class.

Decision Number Five:
Inward-looking metrics
confused a small amount of
progress for real competitive
advantage and did not
detect until it was too late
that the other clubs in the
league were adopting new
strategies and game-
changing models imported
from other sports.

Decision Number Six
The lack of sport-agnostic
algorithms, indices and alerts did
not enable the Soccer club to
correlate strategies and metrics
from other sports in order to
identify and adopt their Best-In-
Class practices until it was too
late.

Why Sport Teams Fail to Perform? Is it Internal
or External Factors Beyond Coach’s Control?

Decision Number Seven:
External factors such as
excessive wind, rain and the
state of the field were
accepted as valid reasons for
the poor performance. This
in turn led to a lack of
corrective action until it was
too late.

Converting Data and Information into Best-In-Class
                    Performance

Decision Number Eight:
To address some of the external
conditions that caused the poor
performance, the Club installed
sensors to measure and calculate the
impact of the wind on the soccer ball.
This information was transmitted in
real time during the game to each
player’s phone in order to increase
their productivity and enable them to
take better real time decisions.

  • 4. What Drives Business Value and Real Competitive Advantage? Decision Number One: To improve the cost and profit per player and to get a competitive advantage over other soccer clubs, the decision was taken to start playing with 9 rather than 11 players. 8/30/2012 WWW.SIMMETHOD.COM 4
  • 5. Are the Metrics Driving your decisions correct and linked to your objectives? Decision Number Two: The second decision was to eliminate from the soccer team any player that was over 25-years old because they could not run as fast as the younger players. 8/30/2012 WWW.SIMMETHOD.COM 5

The Holistic View of Risk and Performance Decision Number Three: The Defense and the Forwards were allowed to develop their own unsynchronized metrics that were used to justify their performance and bonus. Decision Number Seven: External factors such as excessive wind, rain and the state of the field were accepted as valid reasons for the poor performance. Converting Data and Information into Best-In-Class Performance Decision Number Eight: To address some of the external conditions that caused the poor performance, the Club installed sensors to measure and calculate the impact of the wind on the soccer ball.
