Different Ways of Food
Preservation
DRYING
Food drying is one of the oldest methods of preserving food. Drying
food is simple, safe and easy to learn. It is the easiest and the most
common method of food preservation.
SALTING
Salting preserves food by
drawing water out of the food,
preventing bacteria growing
and spoiling the food. Salt is
applied to the food to be
preserved like meat, fishes,
shrimps, fruits and eggs.
FREEZING
It is a quick and convenient
way to preserve food such as
meat, poultry, and fish, which
are stored under 0°C or 32 °F
until they are to be consumed.
CANNING
Canning is an important, safe
method for preserving food if
practiced properly. It involves
placing foods in jars or similar
containers and heating them to a
temperature that destroys micro-
organisms that cause food to
spoil. Sardines, tomato sauce,
pineapple juice are examples of
processed food sealed in airtight
cans.
SMOKING
Smoking is the process of flavoring,
browning, cooking or preserving food by
exposing it to smoke from burning or
smoldering material, most often wood.
Foods such as cured meat and fish are
exposed to smoke and preserved.
Examples of which are tinapa, longganisa
and tapa.
PICKLING
Pickling is the process of
preparing a food by soaking and
storing it in a a brine containing
salt, acid (usually vinegar), or
both, a process which can be
preserve otherwise perishable
foods for months. The resulting
food is called a pickle. It can be
used with most foods, including
fruits, vegetables, meats,
seafood, and eggs.
SWEETENING/
SUGAR
PRESERVATION
is a food preservation method
similar to pickling. Sugaring is
the process of desiccating a
food by first dehydrating it, then
packing it with pure sugar.

A kitchen tool/utensil is a small hand tool
used for food preparation and common
kitchen tasks which include cutting food
items to size, mixing, and measuring.

Read each sentence carefully. Write TRUE if the statement
tells about the uses of the tools/utensils and equipment in
food preservation and FALSE if NOT
________1. Ana is making dough for her empanadas. She
uses measuring cups to get the exact amount of flour.
________2. Andrew loves to eat cucumber. He uses scissors
to peel the cucumber.
________3. The feeding teacher slices ampalaya, eggplant
and squash. She uses chopping board and knife to do it easily.
________4. I love scrambled egg. I always use whisk in doing
it.
________5. Carol’s favorite food is fried chicken. She uses
stockpot to fry it.
________6. Tony bought two kilos of beef. He decided to cook
bulalo and uses pressure canner to make it soften faster.
________7. Immanuel is selling ripe mangoes. He uses
weighing scale to get the exact weight of the mangoes.
________8. Papaya is good for pickling. It is best to put it in a
jar to make it more pleasing.
________9. Grace is busy preparing a fruit salad she uses
mixing bowl to mix the ingredients.
________10. Lito is slicing carrots as one of the ingredients in
his pickled turnips. He uses bolo to slice it.

Situation:
One Saturday morning, Jenlyn’s

Jenlyn refuses because she didn’t
know how to choose quality, fresh
and inexpensive foods. But mother
insisted and give her instructions of
what to look for. What do you think
