The document provides instructions for a take-home midterm exam due on February 24th. It should be typed and not emailed. Students are to answer three essay questions analyzing elements of myths they have learned about in class based on Joseph Campbell's monomyth model and Robert Bierlein's theories of existence. They must name the element being analyzed, cite the relevant part of the myth, and explain how it illustrates the element. There is also an optional extra credit question analyzing King Arthur psychologically through a character or symbol.

Please type your responses to the following questions.
Essay answer (Can be in chart form but remember to name the element of the analysis,
to give the specific part of the story that illustrates the element and to interpret the part
of the story so that you show how it explains/represents the element. You can/should
use specific language form the pink handout.

1. Explain/analyze elements of Departure and Initiation that illustrate Campbell's
Departure and Initiation phases of The Journey of the Hero for Persephone in Demeter
and Persephone. (do not do the Road of Trials and the Ultimate Boon.)
2. Explain at least five of the specific characteristics that make Loki a trickster.

What are two ways you can analyze King Arthur in terms of the psychological
implications of the behavior of one of the main characters or important symbols and
what they represent?
