1. Ask why. Even when you think
you know the answer.
• Never say “usually” when asking a
question.
• Encourage storytelling.
• Look for inconsistencies. These
inconsistencies hide insights.
• Pay attention to nonverbal cues. Be
aware of body language and emotions.
• Don’t be afraid of silence.
• Don’t suggest answers to your
questions.
• Ask questions neutrally.
• Don’t ask binary questions.
• Make sure you’re prepared to capture
notes.
• Try to distinguish between needs,
wants and loves.

•What makes you think "I can't wait until I
get to work this morning!”

•What is your favorite example of a problem
you’ve solved? (And how..)

you pursuing this?)
•What do you want or feel you need to learn
(to achieve these aspirations?)
•What values do you believe in? (Agile
values?) And how do you live those values?
•Personalize a few question for values (ex:
what does TRUST mean to you?)
•What does balance mean to you in your life?
•What are examples of work interactions you
are most proud of? and why?
•What environment do you like to create?
•How do you like to be treated?
•What do you trust vs verify?
•Tell me about a recent learning you had
when working on a project.
•What else should we know about you?

•What is the on-boarding procedure for this
position? First day, first week, month?
•Does the team get together for lunches or
dinners?
•How are teams formed/reformed? Why are
teams formed/reformed?
•Do we have access to the customer?
•Tell me about the relationships we have with
stakeholders, suppliers, partners.
•Is adaptive development supported? Is there
shared learning in place?
•What are the biggest challenges?
•When and how is code deployed? What
systems are in place to help us fail less? What
are the current tools used?
•What are some of the things that you wish you
were doing?
