1. On-line Wine Survey

A survey with the support of a specialized online-platform for questionnaires was
created and links to the questionnaire were posted by the author to her wine
groups through the social medias facebook, twitter, and linkedin as well as on
the wine blog “Uncorked in the Alps”. The author has a total of approximately
1,500 wine-interested followers on these social media that could potentially
follow the link to the survey and share it with others.
The survey was a questionnaire with two pages, each page with five sections
comprised of open and closed questions. The questions on the first page were
either demographic or general questions about opinions of the 10 most planted
red wine grape varieties in the world. It was not until the second page that it
became clear that the questionnaire was about Grenache/Garnacha. It was not
possible to return to the first page to change answers once the second page was
reached.
The field time was defined at just over 3 weeks with the questionnaire available
for online participation from May 11th, 2010 to June 4th, 2010. 154 people
participated in the questionnaire.
The survey was conducted with the support of the online platform “Survey
Monkey” found at www.surveymonkey.at. The questions can be divided into
three themes: demographic, comparative attitudes and opinions of the world’s
top 10 red wine grape varieties (including Grenache/Garnacha), and opinions and
attitudes about the styles, qualities and potential of wines made from
Grenache/Garnacha.
Section I – demographic
Questions 1 and 2 were open questions about the place of residence and general
relationship to wine. 154 people took part in the survey 83.1% completed all
sections and all answers. 70.1% of the participants defined themselves as wine
professionals.

The high number of participants from Austria can be explained as that being the
country of residence of the author of the survey. All though the survey was sent
out anonymously as a “wine survey for non-commercial academic purpose” and

2. went to the international social network of the author, original recipients were
primarily from Austria.
Section II – Comparative attitudes and opinions of the world’s top 10
red wine grape varieties
In the next three question groups, 3-5, the familiarity and general assessment of
Grenache was compared with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir,
Syrah/Shiraz, Tempranillo, Sangiovese, Nebbiolo, Carignon, and
Monastrell/Mouvèdre. 76% of participants were familiar with
Grenache/Garnacha. The variety rated 7th as the most favoured of the 10
varieties. Grenache/Garnacha rated 4th, behind Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon
and Syrah as offering the most versatility in styles.
Section III – Awareness and Image Assessment of Grenache/Garnacha
Question groups 6-10 were pointed directly toward Garnacha/Grenache and
further explored participants’ awareness and image assessment of the varieity.
Question groups 7 and 8 were focused in particular on attitudes towards the
styles, qualities and potential of wines made with Grenache. These two question
groups were posed to be answered with a five step Likert scale and numbered 1-
5 to comprise a quasi-metric scale. The neutral third step was interpreted as the
arbitrary zero point. This made a classic univariate analysis with a mean value
possible (Rossmann 2009).
Conclusion
This survey shows a generally good awareness of Grenache/Garnacha as a
variety. Among participants it was particularly well-known as a blending partner
in dry red wines. It was lesser known as a single varietal wine, a fortified wine,
sparkling wine and even as a rosé. It appears that increasing the awareness of
the versatility in styles of Grenache/Garnacha, it’s ability to pair well with a large
spectrum of foods and its good quality for price ratio could be keys to increasing
its popularity and profile.
