My Concrete Experience
WHAT IS YOUR PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION?
(based on Sadker & Sadker, 1998
Teachers, Schools and Society, 2nd
Ed)
Each of us has a philosophy of education or a set of fundamental beliefs regarding
how we think schools should be run. What is your philosophy of education? To find out, read
each of the following statement s about the nature of education. Decide whether you agree or
disagree with each statement. Use the following numbers to express your response.
4 Agree Strongly 2 Disagree
3 Agree 1 Disagree Strongly
_3_ 1. The student learning should be centered on basic subjects such as, writing, history,
math and science.
_2_ 2. The school subjects should focus on the great thinkers of the past.
_4_ 3. Many students learn best by engaging in real-world activities rather than reading.
_3_ 4. The students should be permitted to determine their own curriculum
_4_ 5. Subject matter is taught effectively when it is broken down into small parts.
_4_ 6. The school subjects should be determined by information that is essential for all
students to know.
_4_ 7. Schools, above all should develop student’s abilities to think deeply, analytically,
and creatively; than develop their social skills or provide them with a useful body of
knowledge about the ever changing world.
_4_ 8. Teaching should prepare students for analyzing, solving the types of problems they
will face outside the classroom.
_2_ 9. Reality is determined by each individual’s perceptions. There is no objective and
universal reality.
_3_ 10. People are shaped much more by their environment than by their genetic dispositions
or exercise of their free will.
_3_ 11. Students should not be promoted from one grade to the next until they have read and
mastered certain key material
_2_ 12. An effective education is not aimed at the immediate needs of the students.
_4_ 13. The curriculum of a school should be build about the personal experiences and needs
of the students.
_3_ 14. Students who do not want to study much should not be required to do so.
_3_ 15. Programmed learning is an effective method of teaching information.
_2_ 16. Academic rigor is an essential component of education.
_2_ 17. All students, regardless of ability, should study more or less the same curriculum.
_2_ 18. Art classes should focus primarily on individual expression and creativity.
_2_ 19. Effective learning is unstructured and informal.
_4_ 20. Student’s learn best through reinforcement.
_3_ 21. Effective schools assign a substantial amount of homework.
_2_ 22. Education should focus on the discussion of timeless questions such as “what is
beauty” “what is truth?”
_3_ 23. Since students learn effectively through social interaction, school should plan for
substantial social interaction in their curricula.
_4_ 24. The purpose of school is to help students understand themselves and find the
meaning of their existence.
_2_ 25. Frequent objective testing is the best way to determine what students know.
_2_ 26. Countries must become more competitive economically with other countries hence
school must bolster their academic requirements to facilitate such competition.
_3_ 27. Students must be taught to appreciate learning primarily for its own sake, because it
will help them in their careers.
_3_ 28. Schools must place emphasis on teaching about the concerns of minorities and
woman.
_3_ 29. Each person has free will to develop as he/ she sees it.
_4_ 30. Reward students well for learning and they will remember and be able to apply what
they learned, even if they not understand why the information is worth of knowing.
_4_ 31. Philippines schools should attempt to instill traditional Filipino values in students.
_4_ 32. Teachers-guided discovery of profound truths is a key method of teaching students.
_4_ 33. Students should be active participants in the learning process.
_4_ 34. There are no external standards of beauty. Beauty is what an individual decides it to
be.
_3_ 35. We can place a lot of faith in our schools and teacher to determine which students
behavior are acceptable and which are not.
_3_ 36. Schools must provide students with a firm grasp of basic facts regarding the books,
people and events that have shaped the Filipino heritage.
_3_ 37. Philosophy is ultimately as least as practical a subject to study as a computer
science.
_4_ 38. Teachers must stress for students the relevance of what they are learning for their
lives outside, as well as inside the classroom.
_4_ 39. It is more important to a student to develop a positive self-concept than to learn
specific concepts.
_3_ 40. Learning is more effect when students are given frequent tests to determine what
they have learned.

Among the three of you, who is more inclined to be an essentialist, perennialist,
progressivist, or behaviorist?
Teacher 2 showed high scores among all educational philosophies mentioned above.
My Observations
Visit a teacher in a school and observe what school /classroom activities reflect
his/her philosophy of education while she is teaching. Identify and describe teacher’s action
or behavior and match each with the identified educational philosophy.
1. Observed actions of a teacher who is progressivist:
A progressivist teacher is known to be good in inquiring new knowledge/facts,
methods and techniques that enable students to become more acquainted on the
content of the subject matter. Also, this kind of teacher believes that only change is
constant in this world.
2. Observed actions of a teacher who is behaviorist.
Providing students with interesting motivation can help a man identifies a
teacher who lives with a behaviorism philosophy of education. This teacher
appreciates students’ works and performances and able to give appropriate praises.
Moreover, she manages to encourage them to perform better next time.
My Reflections
Based on your concrete experience and the actions of the teacher you have observed.
How important is your philosophy of education to your future career as a teacher? How
would your experiences and observations contribute to your becoming a teacher?
Philosophy of education is very important to me as a future teacher. My philosophy
will shape what kind of environment I will give to my learners. It will shape my teaching
styles. It will also define what kind of learners I will produce.
Every experience counts in shaping me as a teacher. My experiences and
observations will affect my beliefs and views towards teaching. It defines what kind of
teacher I would become.
My Affirmed Concepts
Identify at least three concepts learned in your previous subjects like The Teaching
Profession which are related to the experimental Learning Episode 3 (Teaching
beliefs/Philosophy) that are confirmed or affirmed in this activity? Enumerate.
1. Affirmed Concepts 1
Teachers’ teaching philosophy determines their styles of teaching, the way
they manage the class, and how they engage with their students.
2. Affirmed Concepts 2
A teacher has her/his own unique teaching philosophy. The belief of teacher A
towards teaching and learning might be different from that of teacher B but they need
to respect their differences.
3. Affirmed Concepts 3
Every teacher has a teaching philosophy. Tis philosophy shapes his/her way
of imparting knowledge and skills to learners.
My Future Application
Using the first hand experiences in this activity, how will I use these when I become a
teacher in the future?
In teaching and learning,
I will consider different learning styles of students. I will put in mind that
every student had his/her own ability and unique skill that needs to be catered during
teaching.
In addressing diversity of learners,
I will always remember that every individual is unique. A class of 40 students
also have 40 varied personalities to consider.
In creating a conducive learning environment,
I will always bear in mind that a conducive environment is not only a well-
ventilated classroom, neat surroundings and comfortable place to learn but also a
place where safety is secured, discrimination is controlled and equality in learning is
served.

  • 2. My Concrete Experience WHAT IS YOUR PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION? (based on Sadker & Sadker, 1998 Teachers, Schools and Society, 2nd Ed) Each of us has a philosophy of education or a set of fundamental beliefs regarding how we think schools should be run. What is your philosophy of education? To find out, read each of the following statement s about the nature of education. Decide whether you agree or disagree with each statement. Use the following numbers to express your response. 4 Agree Strongly 2 Disagree 3 Agree 1 Disagree Strongly _3_ 1. The student learning should be centered on basic subjects such as, writing, history, math and science. _2_ 2. The school subjects should focus on the great thinkers of the past. _4_ 3. Many students learn best by engaging in real-world activities rather than reading. _3_ 4. The students should be permitted to determine their own curriculum _4_ 5. Subject matter is taught effectively when it is broken down into small parts. _4_ 6. The school subjects should be determined by information that is essential for all students to know. _4_ 7. Schools, above all should develop student’s abilities to think deeply, analytically, and creatively; than develop their social skills or provide them with a useful body of knowledge about the ever changing world. _4_ 8. Teaching should prepare students for analyzing, solving the types of problems they will face outside the classroom. _2_ 9. Reality is determined by each individual’s perceptions. There is no objective and universal reality. _3_ 10. People are shaped much more by their environment than by their genetic dispositions or exercise of their free will. _3_ 11. Students should not be promoted from one grade to the next until they have read and mastered certain key material _2_ 12. An effective education is not aimed at the immediate needs of the students. _4_ 13. The curriculum of a school should be build about the personal experiences and needs of the students.
  • 3. _2_ 19. Effective learning is unstructured and informal. _4_ 20. Student’s learn best through reinforcement. _3_ 21. Effective schools assign a substantial amount of homework. _2_ 22. Education should focus on the discussion of timeless questions such as “what is beauty” “what is truth?” _3_ 23. Since students learn effectively through social interaction, school should plan for substantial social interaction in their curricula. _4_ 24. The purpose of school is to help students understand themselves and find the meaning of their existence. _2_ 25. Frequent objective testing is the best way to determine what students know. _2_ 26. Countries must become more competitive economically with other countries hence school must bolster their academic requirements to facilitate such competition. _3_ 27. Students must be taught to appreciate learning primarily for its own sake, because it will help them in their careers. _3_ 28. Schools must place emphasis on teaching about the concerns of minorities and woman. _3_ 29. Each person has free will to develop as he/ she sees it. _4_ 30. Reward students well for learning and they will remember and be able to apply what they learned, even if they not understand why the information is worth of knowing. _4_ 31. Philippines schools should attempt to instill traditional Filipino values in students. _4_ 32. Teachers-guided discovery of profound truths is a key method of teaching students. _4_ 33. Students should be active participants in the learning process. _4_ 34. There are no external standards of beauty. Beauty is what an individual decides it to be. _3_ 35. We can place a lot of faith in our schools and teacher to determine which students behavior are acceptable and which are not. _3_ 36. Schools must provide students with a firm grasp of basic facts regarding the books, people and events that have shaped the Filipino heritage. _3_ 37. Philosophy is ultimately as least as practical a subject to study as a computer science. _4_ 38. Teachers must stress for students the relevance of what they are learning for their lives outside, as well as inside the classroom. _4_ 39. It is more important to a student to develop a positive self-concept than to learn specific concepts. _3_ 40. Learning is more effect when students are given frequent tests to determine what they have learned.

Affirmed Concepts 3 Every teacher has a teaching philosophy. Tis philosophy shapes his/her way of imparting knowledge and skills to learners.
  • 8. My Future Application Using the first hand experiences in this activity, how will I use these when I become a teacher in the future? In teaching and learning, I will consider different learning styles of students. I will put in mind that every student had his/her own ability and unique skill that needs to be catered during teaching. In addressing diversity of learners, I will always remember that every individual is unique. A class of 40 students also have 40 varied personalities to consider. In creating a conducive learning environment, I will always bear in mind that a conducive environment is not only a well- ventilated classroom, neat surroundings and comfortable place to learn but also a place where safety is secured, discrimination is controlled and equality in learning is served.
