The Rotaract Club of Manila Metro’s The BIG KUYA Project
I. Program Description:
The Project started as an outreach program of a prestigious school in Alabang
Muntinlupa Philippines. Since its eventual decline that led to the outreach program's
extinction, its previous moderator, our then community director, Paolo Naive decided to
bring the idea to the community level and endorse it to the Rotaract Club of Manila
Metro RI District 3810 Philippines.
Having done the needed assessment for the community, Sitio Kabulusan in
Muntinlupa City, the club decided to give the kids of the community role models - a Big
Brother or a Big Sister that will guide them to form and strengthen their character,
principles and values. Given their environment and their status in life, it is a constant
struggle for kids to have a firm character.
The project runs for six consecutive months from September 2007 to March 2008
wherein every Saturday we visit Sitio Kabulusan, one of the depressed areas in Alabang,
Muntinlupa City, to provide lessons on personal formation or Character Education to
children age 6-12 years old.
Due to the success of the BIG Kuya Project, we would like to bring this to other
depressed areas in Manila to provide the same lesson to children living in indigent
communities.
II. Goals:
The goal of this project is to help children living in depressed areas to have a
deeper understanding, motivation, and responsibility with regards to making personal and
social choices by providing them with character education and personal formation.
Our aim is to empower less privilege children to decide what is
right so they may have a chance to choose their own personal, social, moral, and spiritual

2. values so that they may integrate themselves into the community with a sense of respect,
confidence and purpose.
III. Who can join?
Children ages 6-12 years old can register. An orientation will also be given to the
parents of these children to inform them of the club’s goals and strategies. Children will
be provided with a notebook, a pencil and a name tag which they will use for each
session.
IV. Strategies:
We will provide various activities like storytelling, role playing and lectures to
enable children to explore and develop 12 key personal and social values: Cooperation,
Freedom, Happiness, Honesty, Humility, Love, Peace, Respect, Responsibility,
Simplicity, Tolerance, and Unity. We believe that by providing them classes in character
formation and by giving a little of our time makes a BIG impact to the lives of these
children. By showing them that we care, we can give them hope and chance to fulfill their
dreams.
Lessons will be given every Saturday, from 3:30-4:30 in the afternoon.
