2. What is Gardner’s theory?
• Psychologist Howard Gardner developed a theory of multiple intelligences
• In this theory he reasons that humans have a minimum of eight
intelligences
Musical
Bodily kinesthetic
Logical-mathematical
Linguistic
Spatial
Interpersonal
Intrapersonal
Naturalist
• Each of these “intelligences” can be measured separately
• However, normally activities use more than one intelligence at a time
• Led to intelligence tests where more than one answer can be correct
3. Musical Intelligence
Skills in tasks involving music
This could be in the form of a
child prodigy of music
Some people have a natural
ability to learn to play an
instrument and in some cases
multiple instruments
For example, some people can
sit down at a piano and “play
by ear” a song for which they
have no sheet music
4. Bodily Kinesthetic Intelligence
Skills in use of the body or
parts of it
Skills used for problem
solving
People who possess more of
this intelligence include:
• Athletes
• Dancers
• Actors
5. Logical-Mathematical Intelligence
Skills in problem solving
Skills in scientific thinking
May think about something and “reason it out”
until an answer is reached
This group can include many of the world’s
“brightest” minds
Can lead to “eureka” moments
6. Linguistic Intelligence
Skills in the production and use of language
Think about some of the famous poets and their deliberate use of
language:
• Edgar Allen Poe’s “Annabel Lee” or “The Raven”
• William Wordsworth
Think of some of the most memorable orators and their command of
language:
• Winston Churchill
• Martin Luther King, Jr.
• President Roosevelt’s “Fireside Chats”
7. Spatial Intelligence
Skills involving spatial configurations
These include the skills used by artists and
architects
They who possess this intelligence abundantly are
more likely to be able to “envision” things or see
how they should look and be
Another example is Natives of the Truk Islands
who use the stars and their skills to navigate the
seas
8. INTER AND INTRA
PERSONAL
Inter per sonal Intelligence Intraper sonal Intelligence
• Skills in interacting with others • Skills in interpreting one’s inner
self
• Sensitivity to moods and
motivations of others • Able to reflect upon one’s own
feelings and emotions
• “Good People Skills” • Potentially more reserved
• Teachers, coaches, managers • Authors, such as Poe and Woolf
9. Naturalist Intelligence
The ability to identify and classify
patterns in nature
Would have been necessary for survival
in earlier times
In primitive times, those who possessed
a lot of this intelligence may have been
looked upon favorably by those around
them.
Today some people have a great ability
to distinguish one plant, tree, and
animal from another.
