WHAT’S
THAT
SOUND??? ♪
I’ve implemented five sounds
into my power point and with
the help of behavior analysis
Nike will be able to respond
with an old trick, such as rolling
over, in the presence of the new
discriminative stimulus, rather
than in the presence of the old
discriminative stimulus, me
saying “Nike roll over.”
GOAL OF THE BEHAVIORAL
INTERVENTION
Nikes tricks include the following: sitting down, laying
down, giving a “high-5,” rolling over, and giving a kiss
…& now…
each trick has been paired with a specific sound
5. + PAIRING PROCEDURE
Step#1 NEUTRAL STIMULI (5)
1) Sound of a doorbell
2) Sound of clapping
SOUND TREAT 3) Sound of a clock (tick tock)
4) Sound of a duck quack
NO SOUND NO TREAT 5) Sound of a drum roll
UNLEARNED REINFORCER’S included pieces of dog
food, as well as human food, and treats.
EXAMPLE being used involves sound of a bell with
immediate presentation of a treat
6. THE RESULTS of the PAIRING
PROCEDURE
The pairing of the neutral stimulus (the sound of the bell) and the
unlearned reinforcer (the treat) resulted in the value-altering
principle (the pairing procedure converts a neutral stimulus into a
learned reinforcer or learned aversive stimulus)
Which would not have been possible with out
a motivating operation (a procedure or
condition that affects learning and
performance with respect to a particular
reinforcer or aversive condition).

BEHAVIOR: AFTER: for another set of

no praise
This behavioral contingency was
used to ensure that only the
desired response (give a “High-

the bell and not any other
response (for example: rolling
over).

This helps Nike stay on task during the entire eight minute power point.
Peanut butter is one of his favorite

OOOPS!
That last contingency was incorrect …
WHY?
Nike is a dog.
Therefore he is non-verbal
So really the presentation of peanut butter
after the power point is an ineffective contingency
because I can not use rule control!

----- Meeting Notes (12/3/12 22:22) -----Nike and Behavior Analysis
A little background information about Nike. I adopted him when he was only 10 weeks old from the SPCA. Nike is now 2 ½ years old. He is a black lab and boxer mix who is full of energy and personality.
Nike loves a variety of activities which goes hand in hand with his fun and curious personality. One of his favorite things to do is play with other dogs. His best friend is named Dallas, they have been friends since they were both just 10 weeks old, and still love seeing each other. He also loves going for car rides, as you can see in the picture he always rides with his paw out the window. It cracks me up whenever he does it.
The goal of the behavioral intervention: Nikes repertoire of tricks includes sitting down, laying down, giving a “high-5,” rolling over, and giving kisses. I have implemented five sounds into my power point and with the help of behavior analysis Nike is now able to do one of the tricks in his repertoire when he hears one of the five sounds in my power point.
The first step of this processes was the pairing of one of the Neutral Stimuli (sound of a bell, whistle, horn, cheering, and an alarm) with a treat. This is known as the pairing procedure. For the pairing procedure to be effective the Neutral stimulus had to be paired with an unlearned stimulus which included treats, pieces of dog food, and pieces of human food such as peanut butter and cheez-its (two of his favorites).
