Texas DPS Driver Responsibility Program Deadline Tomorrow

April 6, 2011- (Fort Worth) The last day to apply for TCHC Homeless Initiative of the state-wide Texas Driver
Responsibility Program is approaching TOMORROW, APRIL 7, 2011. Individuals must apply online for the amnesty
program that allows persons with suspended Driver Licenses (due to surcharges) to pay only 10 percent of what they owe
and restore their ID privileges.
The amnesty program for homeless individuals initiated by the Tarrant County Homeless Coalition (TCHC), will pay the
lowered amount assessed by Texas DPS, if they are actively engaged in case management and working to end their
homelessness. Dozens of homeless persons have applied through their case managers – wiping clean thousands of dollars
in unpaid surcharges with a maximum payment of $260.00 (see sample attached).
“Many homeless want to meet their obligations, but being unemployed means no income. They can’t pay the surcharge
and subsequently can’t obtain a valid ID that would get them a job. The situation is a Catch-22. Removing the barrier of
having no valid ID will get people back to work,” said Cindy J. Crain, TCHC executive director.
TCHC is able to cover the payment through the Direct Client Services Fund established as part of the Directions Home
program.
