Kam Hashim   www.kamhashim.com 3 You are asked to introduce the person sitting on your right. Please spend no more than 3 minutes learning about the person and you will be required to stand up and introduce the person to all participants.   Exercise: Introduction by fellow participant

Kam Hashim   www.kamhashim.com 5 This seminar will help participants to: Understand basic principles of effective public speaking  Learn practical tips to prepare a speech and control stage fright Practice a solo presentation to identify strengths and weaknesses
Kam Hashim   www.kamhashim.com 6 Whether you are a student, a professional, or an entrepreneur, acquiring good public speaking skills is important.  Having eloquence, poise, straight-to-the-point delivery style, and easy-to-understand content in your presentation have far greater benefits than just producing an awesome rhetoric but they also help foster better relationship with your classmates, employers, customers and others. Public speaking and communications go hand in hand. Importance of public speaking skills
Types of speeches/presentations Kam Hashim   www.kamhashim.com 7 In general there are 3 most popular and basic forms of speeches:  Informative  Special occasion  Persuasive  Others (entertainment and impromptu/spontaneous)  Additional note:   One way presentation vs. two-way
Preparing for a public speech/presentation Kam Hashim   www.kamhashim.com 8 Key areas should be considered are: General scope of the speech (understand time, place, audiences, goals) Communications skills (use right language, non-verbal communications) Subject/Topic (knowledge about subject  a must, spend time research topic) Audiences (get demographic info, know what they want, anticipate questions) Speech goals (develop personal goals will build confidence) Content (create & organize content efficiently, appropriate number of points) Delivery (rehearse, clarity, professional style, use visual aid/tools, illustrate personal experiences, call for action) Feedback (post presentation)
Basic speech content format Kam Hashim   www.kamhashim.com 9 Common anatomy of a speech: Salutations (appropriately address host, honorable/special guests, other audiences) Opening (ask question, statistics, dramatic statement) Content (time allocated, type of speech, include examples) Conclusion (sum up key points, and credits) Feedback (get response from audiences)
Common pitfalls and disadvantages Kam Hashim   www.kamhashim.com 10 Poor communications skills  Unnecessary, inappropriate emotions (overly excited, laugh uncontrollably, bad jokes, yawning) Unprepared (missing speech notes) Memorizing speech word for word (not recommended) Noise (setting interruptions, technical failure) Lack of confidence
Tips to control stage fright Kam Hashim   www.kamhashim.com 11 Do not over think your speech Do not rush into speech (take time to make eye contact with the audiences; pause, stretch prior to delivery) Begin speech with friendly greetings (humor if appropriate) Be confident (not over confident) Practice, practice, practice  (i.e. emphasis on difficult words, names, practice key examples)
