It appears highly probable that immediate open access publishing will become the default mode for scholarly publishing – for the biosciences first, other sectors later. ‘Immediate’ open access means unfettered publication as soon as a scholarly work is ready, with no embargo period. The costs of making a scholarly artefact available can be reduced without sacrificing quality. This interactive session will sketch the argument for these claims and will present several value-added services that publishers could develop to thrive in an open access world.

In November 2013, UKSG published a UKSG and Jisc-funded research project “Impact of Library Discovery Technology” that evaluates the impact of library discovery technologies, specifically Resources Discovery Systems, on the usage of academic content. The report provides a wealth of useful information and a practical set of recommendations for actions that libraries, publishers and others in the academic information supply chain should take to engage with such technologies to best support the discovery of resources for teaching, learning and research. Valérie Spezi discussed the key findings of the report and the implications of these findings for librarians, publishers and content providers, RDS suppliers and other national and international organisations with an interest in the information chain.

Providing accessible content can be a costly and timeconsuming activity for individual libraries who have a legal and ethical duty to support their students who have disabilities. As access to online content has grown and funding for support diminished, libraries are increasingly looking to the benefits of using their collective effort to assess accessibility of thirdparty content and then work with publishers and other suppliers to find solutions. The session will set the scene and provide some case studies from UK universities that show how we are supporting students with disabilities in their use of library content. Libraries have been working individually and collectively to raise the topic of accessibility with publishers and vendors, many of whom have engaged with their customers. In some cases quite simple changes to publisher platforms can produce effective changes. In others a much greater investment is needed. The speakers will use their own experience to outline this topic which we hope will be relevant to librarians, publishers, system vendors and others.

Do you have a question that library analytics data can answer? Do you know what to ask or where to find the answers? And what to do with the answers once you have them? This session will present real-life questions from real-life users that the growing suite of library analytics tools available to UK libraries has helped them answer. You will hear questions, methods, answers, how the information received has been put into practice, and what benefits have resulted.

Sometimes it requires flexibility, alertness, and the ability to adapt. Academic libraries are in the midst of a digital transformation, but in this transitional period some real tensions demand strategic nuance. An expert in the changing roles of the library, scholarly publisher, and learned society, keynote speaker Roger Schonfeld will lead us through the three tensions underlying the changing library environment. Each of these tensions is a budgetary tension, and each of them is a systems tension, and for each of them the library would benefit from a more sophisticated engagement by publishers and vendors.

Presentation at EMTACL10, http://www.ntnu.no/ub/emtacl/ Guus van den Brekel Central medical library, UMCG Virtual Research Networks: towards Research 2.0 In the next few years, the further development of social, educational and research networks – with its extensive collaborative possibilities – will be dictating how users will search for, manage and exchange information. The network – evolved by technology – is changing the user's behaviour and that will affect the future of information services. Many envision a possible leading role for libraries in collaboration and community building services. Users are not only heavily using new tools, but are also creating and shaping their own preferred tools. Today's students are incorporating Web 2.0 skills in daily life, in their social and learning environments. Tomorrow's research staff will expect to be able to use their preferred tools and resources within their work environment. Today's ánd tomorrow's libraries should support students and staff in the learning and research process by integrating library services and resources into their environments.

The talk covered the role of trust in science, with a focus on the validation of melting point data. Where the literature was unable to reconcile measurements, Open Notebook Science was used to clarify. The collection of an Open Dataset of melting point measurements for 20,000 compounds was described as well as ongoing curation efforts and corresponding web services. We used to think of the user in the life of the library. Now we think of the library in the life of the user. As behaviors change in a network environment, we have seen growing interest in ethnographic and user-centered design approaches. This presentation introduces this topic. It also explores changes in how we manage collections as an illustration of this shift towards thinking of the library in the life of the user.

What does success look like when it comes to library discoverability? Index based discovery systems have seen a dramatic rate of adoption since introduction to the research ecosystem in 2009, with more than 9,000 libraries relying on a discovery system to provide users with a comprehensive index to their offerings. Some issues bar the way to providing this comprehensive view, but many challenges have been overcome through collaboration between libraries, content providers and discovery partners. The NISO ODI initiative began to examine these issues in 2011, and released a best practice in June 2014. Speakers will highlight examples of successful collaboration, note continued areas of challenge, and provide insight on how the Open Discovery Initiative Conformance Checklists can be used as a mechanism to evaluate content provider or discovery provider conformance with the best practice.

Heather Hedden, Senior Consultant at Enterprise Knowledge, presented “Enterprise Knowledge Graphs: The Importance of Semantics” on May 9, 2024, at the annual Data Summit in Boston. In her presentation, Hedden describes the components of an enterprise knowledge graph and provides further insight into the semantic layer – or knowledge model – component, which includes an ontology and controlled vocabularies, such as taxonomies, for controlled metadata. While data experts tend to focus on the graph database components (RDF triple store or a label property graph), Hedden emphasizes they should not overlook the importance of the semantic layer.

Syngulon’s technology expands the capacity for selection of microorganisms. The ability to select individual microbes with a behavior of interest is essential, whether for simple cloning at the bench, or for industry-scale production. Synthetic biology uses the concept of “bioengineering” to improve or modify existing genetic systems to create microbes with desired behaviors, and Syngulon uses this approach to develop its selection technologies. This selection technology is based on bacteriocins, ribosomally-produced peptides naturally made by most bacteria to kill competitive microbial species. These bacteriocins can have a limited or wide target range against other microbial species. This technology offers advantageous over antibiotic selection for several reasons: it avoids the use of antibiotics in the first place, helping to reduce the spread of antibiotic resistant microbes. The technology also increases product yield; as bacteriocins are generally smaller peptides, they do not impose a heavy metabolic burden on the producing cell. They can have a wide target specificity, helping to avoid genetic drift. Finally, our system is 100% plasmid-based (e.g. without chromosomal mutations), making it applicable for use in any E. coli strains.
