Thanks to everyone who attended my session at the IPBC Canadian Bookkeeping Conference this year! As promised, here are the slides:
Amidst all of the rapid technological innovations in the banking industry, it hasn't happened without collateral damage. Specifically, we're talking about the humble small town local branch. Who needs a local branch when you can make a mobile deposit and make purchases with a debit card? And with so many lending options online, do you really need to put on a suit and visit a branch to meet with a lender? No, you don't. And here's the rub: history is repeating itself, squarely within the small business finance management space. As small business owners move to the cloud in general, they aren't going to be terribly interested in hours-long meetings with their accountant. They're not going to want to email massive spreadsheets back and forth. They aren't going to need manual categorization. So what's a bookkeeper to do? They're to get out in front—otherwise, they'll be serving an ever-shrinking pool of clients that will one day leave them like the humble small town bank branch. They're to adopt the power the cloud affords not only their clients but also their own business. From this talk, attendees will:
Learn how small business owners are using the cloud, not just for accounting and bookkeeping but for all business disciplines
Get a crash course in separating fact from fiction when it comes to the cloud, related security, technology, learning curve and more
Walk away with specific action items they need to take to capitalize on the cloud and better serve not only their existing clients but to also attract new ones.

20. Which brings us to… The Present
Not quite.
But some pretty cool things are happening
21. 1. Backups, backups, backups: Worth saying again (backups!)
2. Leaky server rooms. Stolen laptops. No worries. (True story)
3. The whole world is your office. No more being tied to your desk.
Cloud
22. 1. Anytime, anywhere: Stuck at the airport? Doctor’s office waiting room? Your
data where you need it.
2. Collaboration: Work with anyone, no matter where they are. No mail, no clunky
USB keys, no “sneaker mail.”
3. Power at your fingertips: Make decisions with just a few taps. Easy for clients,
and powerful for you.
Mobile
23. 1. Automated bank feeds: Less admin work, less chance for error. Do this!
2. Custom reports: The data you need, how you need it, when you need it.
3. Workflow: Data goes where it needs to go. Automatic approvals, visibility,
collaboration.
Automation
28. 1. Even more automation.
2. Everything stored online & easily accessible.
3. New ways to reach out to your clients and help them where and how they do
business. Clients are often leaders in new technology and mobile tools.
