2. What are Agrichemicals?
Any chemical that is used in the Agricultural industry
Fuels
Solvents - e.g. paint remover
Pesticides
Herbicides
Fungicides
Fertilisers
Veterinary chemicals- e.g. drenches, vaccines,
3. What is the difference between the
different chemicals?
Chemical
Pesticides
Herbicides
Fungicides
Fertilisers
Insecticide
Definition
A chemical that destroys fungus
A substance that is toxic to plants
and is used to destroy unwanted
vegetation.
A substance used for destroying
insects or other organisms harmful to
cultivated plants or to animals
A substance used for killing insects
any substance such as manure or a
mixture of nitrates used to make soil
more fertile.
4. Weeds?
A weed is any unwanted plant
There are three main weed categories
Noxious Weeds- identified as a threat to a district or
region. Government legislation required their control
Agricultural weeds- plant species that reduce quantity &
quality of agricultural production to increase production
costs.
Posion livestock- St Johns Wort, Cape Tulip
Harbour vermin- blackberry
Damage wool/hides- Noogoora Burr, Thistle
Reduce crop growth/harvest- skelton weed
Environmental weeds- plant species that invade natural
environment areas, and are not a native to that
area.
5. What do weeds do?
Compete with other plants
Water
Light
Nutrients
Carbon dioxide
Oxygen
Pollinators
Physical space
If water & nutrients are in abundant supply light is the
resource that weeds compete for as weeds have the ability to
grow quickly and shade out useful plants.
6. Why do Weeds Thrive & persist?
Germinate & grow in a range of environmental
conditions
Rapid seedling & vegetation growth
Produce large numbers of seeds over long period
Produce seeds which lay dormant in the soil for a
number of years
Able to disperse seeds over long distances
Lack of natural predators or diseases
Unpalatable or toxic to grazing animals
7. How do you Control them?
IWM
Integrated weed management
IPM
Integrated Pest management
This is a management plan that considers a NUMBER of
control options
8. Ways to control Weeds
There are Three categories that controls can come under
Mechanical
Chemical
Biological
