Notas del editor

  1. Would like to frame my talk today...This is a presentation... Why talk about this? Who am I?
  2. That’s right...Contrary to what you may have been told, I’m here to talk about me!
  3. I have been in the world of education for 20 years. Spectrum of information that bombards you as an educator is profound. How do you figure out what colors work for you? work for your students? Most importantly, how do you keep finding new colors as the years progress?
  4. Quote that has caught my attention, causing a great deal of reflection and growth...
  5. Big fan of Dewey...
  6. Recognizing the changes...
  7. helps us become better models for our children...
  8. Ask yourself the important questions...not just once, but repeatedly over decades of time...
  9. Once the pedagogy is determined beneficial...
  10. Single most influential experience I’ve had in my life...one that has taught me about teaching, along with a host of other things...
  11. Second thing is experience...how I’ve evolved...how I’ve paid attention to the journey and the puzzle pieces I’ve collected along the way...
  12. This picture...epitomizes my classroom goal...
  13. What part of who I am, who I've become will I focus on today?
  14. Everything I do... Self-sufficient scientific community of learners who are challenge to inquire together as a whole class in order to accomplish a task. The word inquiry throws people...(buzzword...scary)
  15. What does it look like?
  16. Went from this....
  17. ...to this. Just after a presentation... All classes different. All students different. But they all have value. And we meet up again a year later. It’s not a superficial, temporary connection for many of them...
  18. There is NO ONE TOOL that will create this environment. Pieces...what are they, how do I put them together. This is my ultimate goal is to form a self-sufficient scientific community of learners. (Dennis)
  19. To make this happen...Arsenal of strategies…Two tools (journals/feedback)
  20. So what role does technology play in my overall goal of creating a self-sufficient scientific community of learners? Discuss it in the context of three of my subgoals...
  21. iMovies/Video
  22. iMovies—Labs...comfort w/ confusion, even teacher got something different...
  23. iMovies—challenge and reflect,
  24. iMovies—feedback, police each other (pics to get to know one another, filming of a lab for reassurance...)
  25. Each person has VALUE! Projects require contributions from everyone. Students can/should contribute to these. Can be difficult w/ class products... Wiki...PRIVATE
  26. Each person has VALUE! Projects require contributions from everyone. Students can/should contribute to these. Can be difficult w/ class products... Wiki...PRIVATE
  27. Use wikispaces
  28. Use wikispaces
  29. Locked pages, checked work, asked this student what happened...
  30. Personal applications...
  31. dealing w/ formatting frustrations...
  32. • Conclude work that can’t get done in class. • Time to provide a response. Build a comfort-level amongst themselves. • Always feel connected to the process.
  33. Each person has VALUE! Students can/should contribute to class products. Can be difficult w/ class products...
  34. We’re people—interests, issues, gifts outside of this class. Physical and emotional safety. Blogs...explain process...Read/Comment/Write...PUBLIC
  35. I’ve chosen my classroom blog’s theme to be a discussion on everyday science applications...medicine, pharmacology, education, politics, environment, etc.
  36. my responses...journals/because I pay attention to something that’s NOT chem, they know I care...
  37. Students love them...
  38. what works well in the classroom... stole the idea private
  39. Main Section includes... science news...
  40. field trips...
  41. professional development... Added authors...
