1. HOW DID THE USE OF MEDIA
TECHNOLOGIES IN THE
CONSTRUCTION,PLANNING,RESEARCH AND
EVALUATION
2. NEW TECHNOLOGIES
The term technology refers to the use of machines and tools which we use to
make our daily lives simpler and more effecient.Technology has had a major
influence on society and how it functions day to day. You may not notice but
everyday you do at least one function that involves using technology. New
technology refers to the innovative advances in different aspects of
technology. Over the years technology get more and more advanced.
Examples of new technology/advances in technology
Home cinema - Technology had advanced majorly starting with viewing films on
video systems, moving on to dvds and Blu-ray viewing. Blu-ray is a format
which was developed to enable recording, rewriting and playback of high-
definition films.
Television -Televisions has advanced rapidly over recent years. TV's first were
bulky systems which content could only be viewed in black and white. Then
one of the major advances in television was the switch from black and white
to colour TV. Flat screens TV's was the next advance allowing TV's to take up
less space and the quality overall was improved. After flat screens came High
Definition TV's.
Phones In the past you could only talk on the phone with a wire connected now
phones are wireless and mobile. Each year phones are getting more and more
developed and interconnected, you can access the internet, work files, music,
take photos and so much more.
3. DIGITALIZATION
Digitalization has allowed convergence through different types of media
that means that media can have multiple fuctions. Most recent examples
of this is within mobile phones you can take pictures, videos, listen to
music, access the internet, play games. Instead of having loads of
different devices to access media they are interlinked onto one device.
Also games consoles now enable you to connect to the internet, store
pictures and more. Convergence has allowed synergy of products
which goes across all the different platforms
4. HOW HAS TECHNOLOGY CHANGED MEDIA PRODUCTION
AND DISTRIBUTION
Advances in technology has made it easier for media to be produced and distributed.
This is because media is now so interconnected and accessible.
Digitalization:
In the past if an individual wanted to make a film they would have to invest lots of money
into equipment and pay distribution companies to get their film out there. Only large media
companies were constructing films as they had the funds to do it. However now you could
make a film on your smart phone if you wanted to. You have got access to a video camera
you can download editing software then you have and then to distribute it you have access
to social networking sites like Facebook you can just post a link to your film and view it on
YouTube. It may not be very good quality but its possible.
Inexpensive:
It is not expensive to construct a piece of media you can get cheap editing soft ware and
video cameras and make a good quality film. You can even make a film poster to raise
awarness.Software like Photoshop used to be about £4000 so only big cooperation's could
really afford it.In present day it is now much cheaper anyone get it including schools.
5. HOW HAS TECHNOLOGY CHANGED THE WAY PEOPLE USE MEDIA ?
• Made media fully interactive-
• Social networking
• Cinema recession proof – even in a recession cinema
attendance is still high
• Piracy- Due to advances in technology it has made it possible
for people to view films illegally affecting film companies
figures dramatically.
6. WHAT PRO’S/CONS HAS IT BROUGHT TO MEDIA
PRODUCERS AND AUDIENCES
Pros
• More choice for the audience
• flexibility
• Cheaper- more competition
• Special effects
• Greater reach and user interactivity
cons
• some can tie you down into contracts
• Financial burdens
• Advertising entices people to think they
need the latest tech
• Trolling- insulting people on social
networking sites
7. MY PRODUCTION
Along the planning, research and construction stages of my short film various
aspects of technology was used .
Technology used Development from As
Research/planning YouTube: to research short films and
distinguish their connotations
Internet: update blogs, further
research.
More in depth research of conventions.
Construction
- short film
- Poster/review
Cameras- to record footage. Final cut
pro- to edit.
Photoshop, YouTube , Facebook on
poster – which suggests that the film
will be promoted on Facebook.
Using more creative editing techniques to
improve editing skills.
Advanced techniques in Photoshop, ensuring
that skills are not just basic. More confident in
using Photoshop than in AS.
Distribution
- evaluation
You tube, word press
PowerPoint, Internet
Helped me to understand the importance of
technology and how much easier it is to
distribute media as everything is so
interlinked.
Instead of sticking to one media format used
PowerPoint to be more creative and file share
to convert the PowerPoint to make it
accessible on this blog.
8. OVERALL
Did it make you more creative?
I feel that the planning and research aspect of the film made me more
creative as the film could have been on anything whereas last years
thriller opening you had a genre to stick to so our ideas were limited to
an extent. In terms of technology I feel that it made my creative by
developing my skills as last year I felt my skills using final cut were
basic but this year I was able to develop them and experiment more.
How did you advance your skills this year and use technology in new
ways?
I hadn't really used Photoshop since I studied GCSE media and I didn’t
feel very confident with it then but when I used it to construct my film
poster I tried to experiment with it and not just use my basic knowledge.
By doing this I was able to construct a film poster with resemblance to a
real industry film poster.
