By, Kelly Donohue TWT Summer 2010 The Future of Mobile Learning & the use of PDA’s
Technology is ever-growing, and should be embraced to better our students!
What is Mobile Learning? “Mobile Learning is a term used to define the type of learning that takes place when the learner has some kind of mobile handheld computer, such as a PDA, Smartphone, tablet PC, games console or other portable device and can make use of the device, it’s connectivity, tools and content to learn at a time and place of the learners choosing.” -learningtogo.org
Different Devices of M-Learning iPod From Apple, allows user to download music, video, books, podcasts, e-mail, and other applications MP3 player Allows user to download and listen to music, podcasts, audio books, and even record lectures PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) A combination of internet access and the ability to network. Has audio, video, movie, e-mail, and cell phone capabilities.
Different Devices of M-Learning E-book Reader Especially popular now, with the Kindle, and Nook. Text can be downloaded from novels, newspapers, and magazines to a portable device Laptop/Tablet PC A portable computer that has access to wi-fi or ethernet. Much of the same software from one’s computer can be downloaded. -http://www.educause.edu
Why should M-Learning be incorporated into Your classroom? The benefits of using this new technology, is growing each and everyday. This video, which is put together by a student, and answers the question better than I can. The Future of Your Classroom
Pro’s of M-Learning This new technology appeals to the new generation of tech-savvy students Anytime, anywhere access to content Can enhance interaction between and among students and instructors Support differentiation of student learning needs and personalized learning Facilitate collaboration through synchronous and asynchronous communication -http://www.educause.edu
Con’s of M-learning Could give tech-savvy students an advantage over non-technical students May make it easier to cheat Might render some content outdated because of rapid upgrades—here today, outdated tomorrow -http://www.educause.edu
My Opinion Overall, the possibilities for new technology in the classrooms is endless. Most students already know enough about the new technology that they could easily adapt, and even excel. The world is constantly evolving, and classrooms should be apart of this movement forward. Preparing students to be able to use these technologies is something useful that they could learn in high school and take with them to college and beyond. As teachers, we are often seen as responsible for students evolution into the “real world”, by denying them access to these technologies, we are stunting their lives potential.
