The Sims is a strategic life simulation computer game where players control virtual characters called Sims in a suburban household. It allows for role playing as different versions of oneself or other created characters, representing postmodern concepts of simulacrum and hyperreality. The game also exhibits instantaneity through ways to instantly gain wealth instead of earning it gradually, as well as intertextuality by incorporating elements from TV and literature into its simulated world. It demonstrates self-reflexivity both through Sims playing The Sims game within the game itself, and Sims addressing the player for needs in a way that acknowledges being controlled.
