7. Cultural
Connections
The Queensland Local Government Reform has been a contentious issue this year.
On 27 July 2007, an Independent Local Government Reform Commission provided its
recommendations to the Queensland Government on the name, class, boundary and electoral
arrangements for the new local government areas in Queensland. The Queensland Government
accepted the independent Commission’s boundary recommendations, which reduced the number of
councils in Queensland from 157 to 73. These changes are now law and take affect for the next local
government elections on 15 March 2008. The Murilla Shire will amalgamate with Tara, Chinchilla and
Wambo Shires, Dalby Town and Division 2 of Taroom Shire (Wandoan area).
So what does this mean for cultural development in our region? Can we protect local character and
build a shared identity?
Studies have found that ‘cultural activities bring communities together, help residents build meaningful
relationships and develop talent, inject funds into the economy and importantly, give communities an
identity’.
This exhibition includes Shire profiles and showcases Council collections and cultural organisations
from six areas which will soon be governed by one regional Council.
Visualising a movement toward the future and a new regional partnership this exhibition aims to
present opportunities that could arise from our cultural connections and help visitors learn about the
identity of the Shires we will be joining.
