2. What is BBFC
• The BBFC is a trusted organisation who
classify cinema films as well as DVD and
videos in the media industry.
• They have 6 classification certificates that
can be handed out to films and videos.
3. Certificates
• Universal – This is where there is nothing that is unsuitable for children to view, for
example Turbo The Smurfs 2.
• Parental Guidance – This allows parents to moderate whether the film is allowed for
their child to watch. However, they may be some sex/drugs references that a child
under the age of 8 may not be suitable for the type of film.
• 12A – This rating is for cinema only, however cinemas are not allowed to supply a
child under the age of 12 to watch a film which is not suitable for them.
• 12 – This rating is the same as 12A however, for home uses such as DVD, Blu-Ray
so on.
• 15 – This contains more of an adult content such as drugs and explicit language
however.
• 18 – Only adults over the age of 18 can view such content as it may contain real
sex and drugs. Language is also at an extreme.
4. What would be suitable for our
film?
• We had felt that with our target audience targeted
between the age of 16 to 25 we would need to hit the
age rating of 15. This is because a horror film would be
appealing to our target audience if some use of explicit
use of language is used as well as explicit scenes. If our
film was to use the 12A rating, we may not be able to
add explicit horror scenes which would leave the
audience uninterested. If we were to use an 18 rating a
part of our target audience would not be able to view the
film meaning our team loosing revenue as well as
exposure.
