- This PPT has been shortened for SlideShare. The full version is an adaptable 0.5 - 1.5 hour seminar with supplementary 1 hour communication skills workshop. A shortened version was delivered at the Engineering Leadership Conference 2010 in Brisbane. - Most of the roles I’ve had are cross-contextual, mixing different domains together, solving problems, and coming up with creative solutions. You might be able to see that within each role there has been a clear progression in skill and development. Sometimes it may appear erratic, but there’s always a relationship towards personal growth and career development. Everything I’ve done links in with work I have previously undertaken. As engineers we are able to understand the hidden structures that exist and to break things apart and put them together in new ways. That’s what I’ve done with my career.
- Pick the behaviours, strategies, beliefs and attitudes that feel right and make sense to you. Invest in developing your communication skills to be able to influence and persuade others. Always keep growing, always keep moving in a positive direction towards your goals. There are many different opportunities out there waiting for you to come on board and practice developing your leadership skills. Begin by getting involved at a level that is comfortable to you. The more “uncomfortable” and the more willing you are to do what ever it takes, the quicker your leadership skills will develop.

- Or will you take the road less travelled by? Will you take the scenic route, and end up on top, having enjoyed the journey.
- Leadership is a combination of mindset, attitudes, and beliefs (about self and others) which drives empowering actions that creates success in the external world. It all starts with you. How you do it is up to you!
