Catheterization of urinary
bladder is the insertion of
hollow tube through the
urethra in to the bladder for
removing urine it is an aspevtic
procedure for which sterile
equipment is required

2. Purpose
• Relieve urinary retention
• Obtain a sterile urine specimen from
a female patient
• Measure residual urine
• Empty the bladder before and after
surgery
• Allows accurate measurement of
urine

3. Urinary catheter size
• The French scale (Fr) is used to denate
the size of cathere ,each unit is rouhly
equivalent to 0.33mm in diameter (that
is 18fr indacted a diameter of 6mm )
• The smaller the number the smaller the
catherer
• Number 8fr-10fr is used for children
• Number 14fr-16fr is used for female
adult
• Number 20fr-22fr is used for male adult

4. Types of catheter
• Intermittent catheter : its
used for drain the bladder for
short period (5-10minute )
• Retention catheter
(indwelling catheter this
placed into the bladder and
secure there for a period of
time

above the pubic area its used
for continuous draing

by trained personal sterile
