Digital Storytelling Kelly J. Hagen
Digital Storytelling The blending of media to enrich and enhance the written or spoken word. A new twist on storytelling. A modern expression to an ancient art. The combination of images, audio, music, and video to tell a story or to make a factual presentation. Sound, music and images surround the written or narrated content.
The Most Important Part! The Story. The content of the story is the most important part. “Voice is the Key” No playing with technology until the content is set!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The writer needs to “OWN” the story. 100 words equals approximately 1 minute of digital creation.
Practice, Pracitice,Practice It is now your turn. Using the following story starter think of a story to tell. The One Where ……..
Bernajean PorterDigitales.us What is this story about? What images help to create the story? Is sound or music used to help create a moooood or image? How does the story make you feel or can you find a connection? Da Um Jeitinho - There is always a way!
Seven Steps to Creating a Digital Story Writing a Narrative Script Planning the Project/ Storyboarding Organizing Project Folders: store all things for the project in one folder to have easier access for creation. Making the Voiceover Gathering and Preparing Media Resources Putting it All Together Film Festival
Writing the Narrative Script Preproduction: Choose your story. Ask your self these questions: What story catches your interest? What story has passion for you? What makes the story worth doing? Six Elements of a Good Digital Story Told as a personal experience Unfolded lessons learned Tension Economizing the story: 100 words = 1 minute Showing ideas not telling them all Incorporating technology in artful ways. Media elements create meaning and not just a decoration. MINIMALIZM IS THE KEY!
Example of a Subject Area Digital Story How is this story connected to curriculum? How did the storyteller make the story personal? What could you do to use this in a lesson? Can you think of a topic for a digital story?
Copyright and Citations This is important! Images and music that are public domain are the least restricted for public use. FAIR USE this allows educators and students to use a single image, sound clip, or extremely short music clip without paying for it, but only within the classroom walls. This means it can’t be shared with parents, or other classrooms, shown in an auditorium, or burned to a CD or DVD, and NEVER can be published to the web.
ISTE Standards Met By Creating A Digital Story National Educational Technology Standards 1. Creativity and Innovation 2. Communication and Collaboration 3. Research and Information Fluency 4. Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, and Decision Making 5. Digital Citizenship 6. Technology Operations and Concepts
Technology and Digital Idea Experiences Illustrate and communicate original ideas and stories. Collaboratively produce a presentation about a topic covered in curriculum. Use digital tools and resources to address tasks. Create a digital story on a local event with first person interviews. Modify or create works of art in a presentation. Use digital planning tools to conceptualize, guide, and manage projects. Evaluate digital resources to determine credibility. Create and publish an online gallery with commentary. Model legal and ethical behaviors.
