• The name of my show is: Breaking News.
• The show will have 10 episodes all with a 1 hour run length (including advertisements). Breaking News is set in a
fictional Newsroom/News Studio of a UK based news show and follows the lives and trials of a group of
journalists researching and presenting news on TV.
• Breaking News will be set in a fictional news studio and will show how the media company presents real news.
This means that the stories that will be seen in the news segments will be real but the characters, their stories and
their reactions will be fictional.
• I came up with this idea by watching the news and wondering what went on behind the scenes.
• The episodes of my show will be titled after songs by The 1975. In chronological order their titles are The City,
Facedown, A Change of Heart, Girls, Heart Out, Somebody Else, Settle Down, UGH, Robbers and Antichrist.
The City- 10 years ago, Diane Clarke’s first major story is covering the 7/7 Bombings in London. Now, 10 years
later on the 10th Anniversary, covering the impact on the city, the GBMC team are forced to face the impact of the
event on their own lives.
Facedown- While reporting on The Greek Economic Crisis, Sarah comes across a story that forces her to face up
to some of the demons from her past. Meanwhile, Diane clashes with Gary.
A Change of Heart- When a news story causes outrage and Stuart doesn’t seem effected, Diane goes to great
lengths to change his mind. Meanwhile, John faces some tough decisions.
Girls- As a historic event unfolds in Cuba, Sarah, Rosa and Gillian are pushed to work together, resulting in some
unexpected consequences. Meanwhile, Gary reveals some surprising information to Diane.
Heart Out- As the countries of the world face breakdowns and conflict, Stuart finds himself in a tragic situation.
Diane continues to help Gary, to the ire of an uninformed John.
Somebody Else- While Stuart takes time out, Diane is faced with a day with a new assistant, an event which turns
out to be more than it seems at first. Meanwhile, Gary jumps in at the deep end.
Settle Down- After Gary’s escapade last week, he finds himself in a position he never thought he would be in.
Meanwhile, John and Gillian take tentative steps as Diane is left to pick up the pieces.
Episode Synopsis 1-7
Episode Synopsis 8-10
UGH- A busy day in politics means a busy day for GBMC as everyone scrambles to keep up with their
jobs. Diane’s personal life interferes in her work life and could put the whole Newsroom in danger.
Robbers- The first of a two-part finale sees the news of the Paris terror attacks flood in and while
concern for Sarah reaches boiling point, sinister cogs are turning elsewhere.
Antichrist- After a successful albeit emotional coverage of the Paris attacks, The Newsroom is about to
be placed in waters that are out of their depth. With Gary and Sarah seemingly out of the game, Stuart
and Rosa attempt to take matters into their own hands
Cast:
Diane Clarke- Gillian Anderson
John Clarke- David Tennant
Gillian Dixon- Karen Gillan
Rosa Gardner- Nathalie Emmanuel
Stuart Gregory- Richard Armitage
Gary Newell- Idris Elba
Sarah Chan- Gemma Chan
Main Crew:
Director- Nick Hurran
Writer- Sally Wainwright
Producer: Gillian Anderson
Executive Producer: Jed Mercurio
Cast:
Diane Clarke- Gillian Anderson- Gillian’ Unique Selling Points (USPs) for the role in my TV Show as she
widely known for her unique voice talents and her ever-present sense of style and grace on screen,
qualities widely associated with Newsreaders. She is also known for her activism and impassioned work
on multiple charitable cases for causes such as Neurofibromatosis, Women’s Rights and Children’s
making her fit in alongside intellectual characters as well as having a demanding presence on screen.
She also has 494,000 Twitter followers showing she has a huge fan base.
John Clarke- David Tennant-David Tennant’s USP for my TV Show is that he is wildly popular with a
younger British Audience, gaining fame in Doctor Who and becoming one of the most recognized
Actors of all time, being named “Coolest Man on TV” in 2007. Tennant fits with a middle-aged
generation whilst also appealing to a younger audience. He also has 440,000 Twitter followers which
shows he has a huge fan base.
• The full budget for the 10 episodes of my TV Show
will be £26,500,000. This has been calculated using
industry standard prices to include important factors
in the creation of a TV Show.
• This will include Scripts, Producers, Camera Crew,
Wardrobe, Make-up, Hair, Actors and overheads.
• I will find this funding from ITV, who I intend will air
the show and will fund the creation of it in order for
it to be their show that they have had a hand in
creating.
Budgeting
The launch date of the pilot episode of
my show will be Friday 6th January 2018
with the final episode airing Friday 10th
March 2018 in order to be in contention
for the awards shows that take place
during this time.
Each episode of my show will be filmed in
9 days, making full filming around 3
months.
The full length of production will be 4
months.
Pre-production will start on 25th August
2017 and Post-Production will end 24th
February 2018
Contingencies
• I have proposed to hire a larger than necessary studio so that if there are any issues with the studio and it is
necessary to be moved into a smaller one, the size difference will not hinder the show’s filming ability.
• Only main characters are essential to the show. The positions of secondary characters are interchangeable
and should any actors/actresses be ill, they will not affect the filming. Should any main actors be ill or
unavailable, they can re-film their scenes in the contingency time I have allotted.
• Should any of the TV or Radio shows in my Marketing plan be unavailable or unwilling to participate in
interviews to promote my show, I will use the money I would have used on those for extra billboards and
extra online advertising in order to ensure that my show is still aptly promoted.
Target Audience
• The target age of my show will be 15 and over
• Because of this the show will be broadcast after the watershed at 9pm.
• The show will contain some strong language, some violent scenes and mild
drug use.
• The target audience will also be predominantly female. The show will not
show any obvious political alignment, as usually with presenting the news
there can be political motivations and in order to ensure my show is
appealing to all, there will be no obvious political alignment.
• The show will appeal to my Target audience because it is on after the
watershed and will be in the genre that is stereotypically watched more by
my Target Audience
Marketing Plan
Adverts for my TV Show will begin to air on ITV over 3 weeks
before the release. The first adverts will only show a brief view of
the news studio and say coming soon. 1 week beforehand an actual
trailer will be released to show more content to entice the audience
to watch the show and establish the premiere date.
The cast will do Interviews about the show on British morning show
Good Morning Britain. The cast will also appear on the Jonathan
Ross Show and do interviews on BBC Radio One to promote the
show. This is because these shows are popular amongst my target
audience and will therefore raise awareness about my show.
The poster for the show (right) shall be put up on billboards and
buses across the country in order to advertise the show to multiple
audiences.
This is the design of the newsroom
that will be used in my show when
the news segments are on. This will
be critical to the series, although the
tone will not be so dark, the lighting
will be far lighter as it usually is on TV
I chose this design as it is
very professional and
unique and will be
symbolic of the unique
aesthetic of my show.

This is the design of the newsroom that will be used

on TV. I chose this design as it is very professional

aesthetic of my show.
This will be the design of the news studio
where the show is mostly set. It is intended to
look like a school/not like a professional studio
as the story will include the fact that the owner
bought whatever he could afford and built
something up from nothing to become a
media dynasty.
Set Designs
This will be the design of the main
character’s apartment. This is simple
and cheap yet elegant, which will go
with the characteristics of the character
that owns the apartment. This will be
one of the sets that are constructed in
the studio and is included in the
budget.
This is the design of a bar in Liverpool
that will be rented out (cost included in
the budget). I chose this bar for its
design as it suits the aesthetic and the
characteristics of the characters in the
show.
This design will be altered to not
include a cityscape but will instead be
on top of the media building, with the
designs of the seats and the floor and
canopy.
Sample Script
Introductory monologue for Episode 1
Diane: It is often the way that the most important things in life are under-recognised. We all go through our lives,
not acknowledging, or in some cases not knowing, the most important things about ourselves. We don’t realise
what makes us tick. We don’t understand why some fight and some fly. We don’t understand why we love and we
don’t understand why it hurts. We just do it. We carry on in our lives like nothing truly matters but what is right in
front of us. But I’d like to think I’m different. I’m a News Presenter you see. So I’ve spent my life looking at the lives
of others. I have spent my life learning what makes them tick, why they love and why it hurts. I know why some
fight and some fly. I’ve seen the darkest corners of Humanity. But I’ve also seen the brightest. And what I’ve
learned is that while it can sometimes be difficult to tell who fits where, we all fit somewhere. We all bring either
light to the lives of others, or we are the darkness that consumes them. But the real trick, is convincing yourself
that you are not the darkness.

This means that the stories that will be seen in the news segments will be real but the characters, their stories and their reactions will be fictional. • I came up with this idea by watching the news and wondering what went on behind the scenes. • The episodes of my show will be titled after songs by The 1975. In chronological order their titles are The City, Facedown, A Change of Heart, Girls, Heart Out, Somebody Else, Settle Down, UGH, Robbers and Antichrist.

Diane continues to help Gary, to the ire of an uninformed John. Somebody Else- While Stuart takes time out, Diane is faced with a day with a new assistant, an event which turns out to be more than it seems at first. Meanwhile, Gary jumps in at the deep end. Diane’s personal life interferes in her work life and could put the whole Newsroom in danger. Robbers- The first of a two-part finale sees the news of the Paris terror attacks flood in and while concern for Sarah reaches boiling point, sinister cogs are turning elsewhere. • 8. • The full budget for the 10 episodes of my TV Show will be £26,500,000. This has been calculated using industry standard prices to include important factors in the creation of a TV Show. • This will include Scripts, Producers, Camera Crew, Wardrobe, Make-up, Hair, Actors and overheads. • I will find this funding from ITV, who I intend will air the show and will fund the creation of it in order for it to be their show that they have had a hand in creating. • 12. Contingencies • I have proposed to hire a larger than necessary studio so that if there are any issues with the studio and it is necessary to be moved into a smaller one, the size difference will not hinder the show’s filming ability. • Only main characters are essential to the show. The positions of secondary characters are interchangeable and should any actors/actresses be ill, they will not affect the filming. Should any main actors be ill or unavailable, they can re-film their scenes in the contingency time I have allotted. • Should any of the TV or Radio shows in my Marketing plan be unavailable or unwilling to participate in interviews to promote my show, I will use the money I would have used on those for extra billboards and extra online advertising in order to ensure that my show is still aptly promoted.
  • 13. Target Audience • The target age of my show will be 15 and over • Because of this the show will be broadcast after the watershed at 9pm. • The show will contain some strong language, some violent scenes and mild drug use. • The target audience will also be predominantly female. The show will not show any obvious political alignment, as usually with presenting the news there can be political motivations and in order to ensure my show is appealing to all, there will be no obvious political alignment. • The show will appeal to my Target audience because it is on after the watershed and will be in the genre that is stereotypically watched more by my Target Audience
  • 14. Marketing Plan Adverts for my TV Show will begin to air on ITV over 3 weeks before the release. The first adverts will only show a brief view of the news studio and say coming soon. 1 week beforehand an actual trailer will be released to show more content to entice the audience to watch the show and establish the premiere date. The cast will do Interviews about the show on British morning show Good Morning Britain. The cast will also appear on the Jonathan Ross Show and do interviews on BBC Radio One to promote the show. This is because these shows are popular amongst my target audience and will therefore raise awareness about my show. The poster for the show (right) shall be put up on billboards and buses across the country in order to advertise the show to multiple audiences.
  • 15. This is the design of the newsroom that will be used in my show when the news segments are on. This will be critical to the series, although the tone will not be so dark, the lighting will be far lighter as it usually is on TV I chose this design as it is very professional and unique and will be symbolic of the unique aesthetic of my show.
  • 16. Costume Designs • Seen in sample footage • Simple and smart workwear • Main character • Main Character • Formal and Elegant • Cheap • Shows character of main protagonist • Male lead • 1st Half of series, simple, formal cheap • Used to highlight how his character changes • Secondary male character • Simple and Cheap • Highlights position in the show
  • 17. Set Designs This is the design of the newsroom that will be used in my show when the news segments are on. This will be critical to the series, although the tone will not be so dark, the lighting will be far lighter as it usually is on TV. I chose this design as it is very professional and unique and will be symbolic of the unique aesthetic of my show. This will be the design of the news studio where the show is mostly set. It is intended to look like a school/not like a professional studio as the story will include the fact that the owner bought whatever he could afford and built something up from nothing to become a media dynasty.
  • 18. Set Designs This will be the design of the main character’s apartment. This is simple and cheap yet elegant, which will go with the characteristics of the character that owns the apartment. This will be one of the sets that are constructed in the studio and is included in the budget. This is the design of a bar in Liverpool that will be rented out (cost included in the budget). I chose this bar for its design as it suits the aesthetic and the characteristics of the characters in the show. This design will be altered to not include a cityscape but will instead be on top of the media building, with the designs of the seats and the floor and canopy.
  • 19. Sample Script Introductory monologue for Episode 1 Diane: It is often the way that the most important things in life are under-recognised. We all go through our lives, not acknowledging, or in some cases not knowing, the most important things about ourselves. We don’t realise what makes us tick. We don’t understand why some fight and some fly. We don’t understand why we love and we don’t understand why it hurts. We just do it. We carry on in our lives like nothing truly matters but what is right in front of us. But I’d like to think I’m different. I’m a News Presenter you see. So I’ve spent my life looking at the lives of others. I have spent my life learning what makes them tick, why they love and why it hurts. I know why some fight and some fly. I’ve seen the darkest corners of Humanity. But I’ve also seen the brightest. And what I’ve learned is that while it can sometimes be difficult to tell who fits where, we all fit somewhere. We all bring either light to the lives of others, or we are the darkness that consumes them. But the real trick, is convincing yourself that you are not the darkness.
