- Personal Narrative: Long hours, hard work, and a very sore body can only begin to describe my journey towards understanding dance. When I first started dancing, I merely learned the basics. As I continued to get more involved in dance, the dance studio became my second home and traveling to dance competitions became a regular occurrence. Dance was a huge part of my childhood. Although I am not dancing anymore, I am still using my knowledge and skills in many ways. When I was just two years old, my mom put me in a dance and gymnastics class that taught me the basics of both sports. I learned the basic ballet positions, pliés, how to balance, how to point my toes, etc. I absolutely loved the class, so my mom decided to enroll me in more classes. I took ballet, jazz, and tap classes to better my skill level. I began performing in recitals when I was about three years old. Performing in a recital was way different than just taking a class. It required learning and memorizing a routine. I had to learn about eight counts, formations, etc. The eight counts and formations were very simple when I was young. However, they got more complicated as I grew older. I learned that I had to practice at home, as well as at dance class, to learn and perfect the routines. I never got tired of dancing; I wanted to be at dance class all the time. Dance soon took over my life. After a few years of taking dance classes, cheering, and doing gymnastics; my mom moved me to a studio that competed in dance competitions. I was about seven years old when I made the switch. This PAC dance studio required a lot more of my time and effort, and I knew I had to become serious about dance. When I first started at PAC, I competed on a “pom” team. In order to be on a competition team, I was required to take different technique classes. These technique classes taught me so much about what I know about dance today. I learned many key terms, how to keep a rhythm, how to use my whole body to form certain poses, etc. These classes were multiple times a week on top of the regular competition team practices and choreography sessions. We competed in competitions around California, mainly in the valley and Southern California. As I got older and continued to compete for the studio, there were more and more requirements. I was at the studio at least four days a week for a few hours each night. I was on multiple competition teams including; jazz, pom, lyrical, and hip hop. We competed pom routines at cheer competitions, whereas we competed the other routines at studio competitions. My team and I traveled most of the weekends between January and April. The rest of the year was spent preparing for the upcoming competition season. My life consisted of just dance and school, but I loved it! It all suddenly came crashing down and I thought my experience with dance was over. In high school, I injured my hip doing dance. I had to have surgery to repair the damage and I can no longer dance. I was upset at first, but I realized that I needed to put my health before dance. I discovered, however; that I can still enjoy dance without competing. I am the junior varsity cheer and dance coach at my local high school. I very much enjoy teaching my team all of the skills that I know and seeing the joy that they get from dancing. I find coaching to be just as rewarding as actually being on the team. Not only can I use my knowledge for coaching, but I can apply it in many of my college courses and my future career as a teacher. I have taken multiple classes at Fresno State that have to do with dance or movement. My previous knowledge has helped me to better understand the content in those classes. I am also learning how to incorporate dance into my future classroom. I never realized that I can teach academic standards through dance and movement. I am so excited to apply my knowledge about dance in my future classroom. I have learned so much throughout my experience in dance. Dance taught me discipline, responsibility, time management, the importance of fitness, how to use my body, etc. I am so thankful that my experience with dance didn't end with my injury. I am able to help other's achieve their goals in dance and see how dance has impacted their lives. I can't wait to use my skills and dance experience in my future classroom. Teaching through dance is a great way for students to be able to get up and move throughout the day. Dance has made a great impact on my life and will continue to impact my life in many ways!
- Personal Narrative essay: Since the beginning of time, the arts have helped us to celebrate cultural traditions in various ways. Close your eyes and imagine a cultural celebration. Chances are that your thought included music, artwork, food, and maybe, dance. Since art is a way of expression, it makes sense that it could be a tool for allowing us to express something as important as our culture. As a Mexican-American, I can look back and remember different music, dance, and visual arts that shaped and the Mexican culture in my mind, and helped me to understand its complexity. Traditions have always been a part of my heritage and life. Art plays a major role in these as well. From music, to dance, and visual arts, each culture is unique and the arts help set it apart from all the rest. Sometimes we may think that art is influenced by a culture. Take for instance, the different times when periods like the Renaissance occurred. Art was greatly influenced by the culture of that day. What if, however, art, likewise, has the power to influence culture, and cultural traditions? Growing up, I witnessed this firsthand. Take for instance cultural music. Each culture can identify with a specific type or type of music. In the Mexican culture these include types of music like mariachi or banda. No Mexican fiesta is complete without it! Certain qualities in the types of music help us to identify the culture they are helping to express. Often times, we are able to distinguish between cultures by simply listening to the music played in that region. This is because each country and culture uses different instruments in different ways to produce a unique blend of sounds that can be called all their own. Art also has an influence on the type of dance that is involved in cultural traditions. Just like every other culture, Mexico prides itself in having dances that are considered “Mexican." Some examples include folklorico, or dances like the cumbia, salsa, or merengue. These cultural dances help members of that culture identify with one another and express their heritage in a way that is both understood by the rest of the members of their culture, and recognized by people outside of their culture. Take for instance the mexican celebration of a Quinceanera. Typically, more traditional, classical dances are followed by an evening filled with all kinds of Latin dancing and music. Likewise, other countries and cultures also use dance as a form of expression of their culture. Traditions are enhanced by sharing this language with one another. Personal Narrative: The plane took off and I braced myself for what would likely seem like an eternity. I was on board an eight-hour flight from Fresno, California to London, England. As I scrolled through the channels of weird T.V. shows offered as in flight entertainment, something caught my eye. I saw the movie Les Miserables. Not only was this the longest movie available, but I had heard all of my friends rave about it since it came out this past Christmas. Alright, I decided, and I put on my tiny disposable headphones and shifted to a somewhat comfortable spot in my narrow seat and let the show begin. Immediately, I was captivated by the sounds of beautiful opening music. About halfway through the film, I fell asleep to the beautiful music and knew I had just experienced something special. And so began my "journey" of falling in love with this show. Had I not been on this trip with my best friend, Jillian, that might have been the end of my Les Miserables experience. However, Jillian was a cultured individual who absolutely adored the play and was determined to see it live in London. However, making this dream a reality was quite an experience. We decided to purchase tickets near Trafalgar Square at a small box office after our art class. Little did we know that this was also the day of a huge football match between England and Scotland. So we braved crowds and crowds of rowdy fans wearing kilts and blaring bagpipes and began wading through the waves of people to reach the box office. Despite the boisterous drunks and fanfare, we made it to the office to find that it had closed early! Devastated, we decided to try one more location. We finally found three seats together (the last three in a group together, I might add!) for a theatre playing the show on the last night we would be in the country. It seemed like fate! Then, right on cue, it began to poor rain. It was such a liberating feeling walking thorough the streets of London, knowing I was about to see an incredible quality show, that the rain only made my own life seem like some well-timed screenplay. Finally, the day had arrived! We got dressed in the nicest clothing we had been able to squeeze into our suitcases, and we headed to the theatre. Since we were staying fairly close by we walked and took in all the foreign sights and sounds along the way. However, I was too excited to take in much from my surroundings! We reached the entrance and even asked foreign tourists to take a picture of us with our tickets to commemorate the event. They were equally excited and so we ended up taking a picture of their family for them as well. Finally, we pushed through the throngs of people excitedly waiting in the lobby and found our seats. We sat in our plush red seats, and let the show wash over us. From the opening number to the ending song, I was entranced. Each scene brought with it new exciting developments in the plot, and the actors and actresses were incredibly believable. The live orchestra brought tears to my eyes, and I wished the show would last forever. Each character that came onto the stage reminded me of someone I knew. I was slightly homesick, but watching this production let me think of the people I loved as though they were here with me. I was able to personally connect with each actor or actress and their portrayal of struggle. I seemed to forget that I was in a theatre and let my mind drift back in time to a different England than as I knew it. There was also a live orchestra, so the quality of the music was clear and extra special. I loved the show so much that I want to see the show again when it comes to Fresno, and other shows! I would love to see other actors and actresses bring the show to life. This show helped me to renew my love of live theatre, and I want to share my experiences with people I know. In conclusion, I fell in love with the show Les Miserables, while traveling abroad in London this past summer. It was quite a journey getting tickets to see the show, but it was worth it. I truly connected with the characters and the music, and I want to see as much live theatre as possible from now on. Seeing this production was definitely my favorite experience with the arts.
- Personal Narrative essay: Color is all around us- enriching this world that we live in. I have always considered myself a bright and colorful person, someone who is always drawn to bright colors and dressing in bright colors that reflect my personality. Color has a lot of meaning to it and can be interpreted in many different ways. Color is used to physically describe something, but it can also be used to describe much deeper concepts such as emotion. I find color in every aspect of my life- from this amazing world I call my home to the emotions that I feel each and every day. This class taught me about the element of color and increased my understanding of why artists use color the way they do in their artwork. Colors are all hues, or a specific color with a measurable wavelength- hues are responsible for coloring our diverse world. There are primary hues that include red, yellow, and blue which are the building blocks for making all the other colors. Secondary colors- purple, green and orange- are all created from mixing the primary colors together. Colors can then be put onto a color wheel, which helps artists understand the relationships between the colors. Colors can be complementary to each other, which means that they are opposite one another on the color wheel and provide stark contrasts when used in paintings. Colors can also have value- it can be lighter or darker. Lighter values can be given to a color by mixing the color with white resulting in a tint. For example, my favorite color, pink, is a tint of red because in order to make pink, you need to mix together white and red. The world is filled with many beautiful colors, but I do find myself drawn to these colors in particular. I have gone through phases concerning my favorite color in the world, and it has changed a few times throughout my life, but for the past 15 years, it has been pink. The color pink is my favorite because it is feminine, delicate, fun and bubbly and is often associated with feelings of love, which is something I believe is needed in life. I am also drawn to the color pink because it is bright and when I wear it, it helps me stand out from the crowd as pink isn't a very common color on a college campus. I am also drawn to the combination of the primary colors of red, yellow and blue because they go so well together- to me, they represent balance and being rooted as they are the base in which all colors are created. When all three are used together, it also reminds me of childhood as many children's toys incorporate these colors. Finally, I am drawn to the works of art that use the splatter technique where it looks like all the colors are present in the work. These paintings make me super happy because of all the color variety.One of my favorite paintings that represents the color pink, which is a tint of Red is Red Hills with Flowers by Georgia O'Keefe painted in 1927. It is oil on oil painting of 2 beautiful pink flowers backed by beautiful red hills. I chose this painting as one of my favorite representations of the color pink because the flowers have different tints of pink in them- they have a darker shade of pink in the middle and as the flower fans out, the tint gets lighter until it reaches the orange edges. I like that the flowers show off an array of the color pink as it has many gorgeous shades from soft baby pink to feisty hot pink- and this painting does an amazing job of showcasing multiple shades of my favorite color. Next, to represent my like of the primary colors is Composition A by Piet Mondrian, painted in 1923. This beautiful oil painting does a great job of showcasing the balance that primary colors bring to a piece of art. I love how Mondrian makes the reds, blues and yellows pop against the white and black squares and how the primary colors provide contrast to the monochromatic blacks and whites. Finally, I love Blue Clamp painted by Jim Dine in 1981 on an oil canvas. I love how the combination of colors splash together to give it that splatter, pop art effect and all the colors give this piece a fun, happy feeling which is reflective of my personality.I find color all around me. For example, my Zumba classes are always popping with color! The class is always dressed in bright, exciting colors to enhance the exhilaration of the fast paced dance moves and music. The bright colors also reflect the feel of the class, which is fun, fast-paced, empowering and inspiring. I love Zumba because it makes me feel extremely happy and exhilarated, and the added rush from all the exciting colors makes it an amazing experience. I also find colors at my job. I work at Hot Dog on a Stick, and our uniforms are a combination of the colors red, yellow, blue and white- red white and blue for being all-American and yellow to represent the lemonade that we are famous for. I love wearing the bright uniforms when I'm at work because they reflect my happy personality and help our company to stand out from the other stores in the mall.Colors also have the power to influence our feelings. For example, I have many connections to the color red. Red, to me, is a very complex color as it is the color I associate with anger and pain as well as love. My ex-boyfriend gave me a red rose just before ending our relationship- this was when the color red took on a whole different meaning to me. Colors of the season also influence my mood. My favorite season is Autumn because I love the colors of changing leaves- the reds, oranges and yellows! I love the orange pumpkins which remind me of pumpkin pie, Halloween and Thanksgiving- two of my favorite times of year as I get to see my family with the holidays so close. I also love the colors of Spring because they are shades of pinks, purples, blues and yellows- the bright blossoms and flowers as well as the fresh, green grass that signal a new beginning and warmer weather on the way. I also love the bright colors of Easter in the Springtime. The colors of Autumn invoke feelings of warmth, comfort and family whereas the colors of Spring make me feel refreshed, invigorated and bright.
- Personal Narrative essay:Art can simply be found everywhere in the world. Life itself is an art form because we live in a world full of designs, architectures, surrounded by billboards, nature, even including the social media that is considered art too. You can discover art in your very own backyard, at a park, in museums, or even at events. I personally have found art during my stay at San Diego, and New York, plus my visit to Yosemite National Park. Art can be found at almost every corner of the world, one just have to simply look. People do not have to travel to find art because art is a form that is visible to the eye in all aspects of life. I have found art particularly outside of home and the more art I am able to find, the more beautiful life gets. In San Diego Sea World, I saw so many artistic designs everywhere in the attraction. All I remember saying during my time there was, "Take a picture of me here!" because the designs there were really well made to suit the theme and the whole attraction overall. I couldn't get enough of the artistic designs there. The turtle reef exhibit was one I thought was very cute because it had turtle figures with some blue, thick plated metal bar lines as the reef to give it an ocean-like feel. The design popped right out at us like 3-D as if we were entering a reef of turtles. The Dolphin show was one on my list to NOT miss. I found art in this show because it included singing, acting, and animal combined with human performances, which I feel is related to art in so much ways, and that not only humans can perform! At Yosemite, I found art in life form through nature there. Like I said, art is a form that one can simply spot, and at Yosemite that form was everywhere. I took some photos of Yosemite's landscape, waterfalls, and streams that I consider all art. The river streams at Yosemite were a form of art just by the way it flows, and I was able to spot the focal point. The waterfalls were also a form of art because of its flowing motion, its texture if it looked smooth or not, and overall its beauty. The mountains and landscape are not human made, but at all aspects they are worth calling art because of their natural form. I think that just by looking at an image that has mountains and landscape in it, anyone is able to get a feeling of being there at the moment with nature. Fresno of course has art, but New York has nothing but artistic designs! The trip was amazing with the help of all the art that I saw with it. When I saw Time Square it was art itself. The architect and the design of everything there has all the basis of art. There were billboards, posters, architecture, advertisements, statues, some small dance performances, body painting and everything else. I thought that the big 'Build-A-Bear' statue was also an interesting and cute piece of art with the distorted eye and dislocated heart. The fountain in Central Park was a beautiful and well made, yet simple art too. I remember it the most because that fountain was used in the TV show 'Friends' for their opening intro theme. Lastly, I found art at Madison Square Garden in New York where SM Entertainment from South Korea came to perform. They danced, sung and gave a phenomenal stage performance that I can easily call art. Art is found all over the place and if we closely think about it, we have probably seen more art without realizing than when we actually plan to go see them. I think that Art can be found at artistically designed places like Sea World meant for the public to explore and enjoy. Art can be found within the natural life of nature. It can also be found out of our reach, like New York where all we will see is a reflection of art. In the future, I will continue to explore the world around me and capture every art that I see just to see how much and where art can be found.
