2. http://www.flickr.com/photos/brunette_4_ever/239382938/The tragic events that occurred on September 11, 2001 may be perhaps the most traumatic event that took place in American history and have dramatically changed our nation.
3. I chose to research the events of September 11th because I have always been interested in the topic, but did not know the full details of the events in terms of the cause and effects. I was also born in New York City and I visit there monthly to see my family so New York is like my second home. http://image.guardian.co.uk/sys-images/Arts/Arts_/Pictures/2007/09/12/groundzerounderworld460.jpg
4. The events that occurred on September 11th affected our nation as a whole. It also exposed our countries weaknesses along with the hate towards our country. Since 9/11, our national and personal security has been greatly affected as people today still are questioning our protection. Many of us were young when September 11th took place and may not know why it happened and what was the result of it.

6. Many Arab nations around the world envy America for many reasons. One reason they hate America is because we are a free society in which no matter your gender, age, religion, or race, you have can live your life the way you want without any restrictions. Within the last few decades, western influence has been spreading throughout the world, and many Arabs in the Middle East are strongly opposed to this. Another reason they hate America is because of our support for Israel. Israel is a primarily Jewish nation in which they represent a free and open society similar to ours. Israel is located at the heart of the Middle East and is surrounded by Arab nations. Many Arab nations are also filled with radical Islamists who believe Islam should spread all over the world and take over Judaism and Christianity, America which is Judeo-Christian is another reason why they hate us. http://patriotsforamerica.files.wordpress.com/2009/07/us_flag_burning_2.jpg
7. America began noticing hate towards our nation in the 1970’s. On November 4th, 1979, an angry mob of 300 to 500 students stormed the American Embassy in Iran and captured and held hostage 66 US citizens. Although women and African-Americans were released a short time later, 51 hostages remained imprisoned for 444 days. The hostages were eventually released with all of them alive and unharmed. http://creepingsharia.files.wordpress.com/2009/11/hostage-184-1-bw-450.jpg
8. In 1979, the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan in a communist struggle. Afghanistan at the time was very weak and many towns were being destroyed and they did not have an army. During this time, the Cold War between the Soviet Union and United States was still in effect. Since the United States did not want a direct war with the Soviets, they were influenced by a Charlie Wilson, a US congressman, to aid Afghanistan to defend themselves against the Soviets. The United States taught Osama Bin Laden and his troops war techniques and supplied them with weapons. The United States provided Afghanistan with $500 million dollars and Saudi Arabia also provided $500 million dollars. Soviet forces withdrew in 1989 but the United States also withdrew from Afghanistan leaving the country in ruins. Over half Afghanistan’s population at the time were under the age of 14. http://terrorism.about.com/od/warinafghanistan/ss/AfghanistanWar_2.htmhttp://www.coloursandlight.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/afghanistan-war-photos.jpg
9. OnAugust 2, 1990, Iraqi troops were ordered by Saddam Hussein to invade Kuwait over a dispute with oil. This would start what is known as the First Gulf War. On August 7th, US troops were stationed in Saudi Arabia to protect their oil fields in fear that Iraq would invade Saudi Arabia. On Nov. 29, the United Nations set Jan. 15, 1991, as the deadline for withdrawal of Iraqi troops from Kuwait in which Saddam Hussein refused to comply. Operation Desert Storm was launched on Jan. 18, 1991 with massive airstrikes. On February 24th, ground attacks began and in less than 100 hours, Saddam Hussein’s troops were defeated. Iraq agreed to terms of a United Nations permanent cease-fire on April 6, 1991 but Saddam Hussein still remained in power. http://history.howstuffworks.com/cold-war/persian-gulf-war.htmhttp://matthew1026.com/071009-F-2911S-013.jpg
10. The Al-Qaeda is known as the worlds most infamous terrorist group after being responsible for the events of 9/11. Founded in the 1980’s, Osama Bin Laden and thousands of volunteers in the middle east, came together to rebel against Soviet occupation in Afghanistan and eventually defeated them. After defeating the Soviet Union, Al-Qaeda began becoming more of a radical Islam group rather than an army. Since the Gulf War in 1990, Al-Qaeda has been against American interest and want to drive Americans and American interest out of all Muslim nations. Al-Qaeda is responsible for 9/11, the Madrid bombing, and the London bombing.<http://www.nydailynews.com//+Qaeda>.http://giovanniworld.files.wordpress.com/2009/07/al_qaeda2.jpghttp://www.infoplease.com/spot/al-qaeda-terrorism.html
11. The Taliban is another terrorist group that is associated with the events of 9/11. They ruled Afghanistan from 1996 to 2001 and were infamously known for their ban of western influence. During their reign, the Taliban banned television, music, and internet. Men were required to grow full beards. Women were not allowed to go to school or even leave their home without a male relative. The Taliban was close with Osama Bin Laden and allowed him and Al-Qaeda to recruit and train within their country. After September 11th, all countries cut diplomatic ties with the Taliban and in December 2001, the Taliban were thrown out of Afghan government. http://www.infoplease.com/spot/taliban.htmlhttp://shallowthinking.files.wordpress.com/2009/10/taliban.jpg
12. Osama Bin Laden, leader of the terrorist group Al-Qaeda, is known as the world’s most wanted terrorist. His hate for the United States first began when the United States stationed troops in Saudi Arabia during the Gulf War in 1990. Bin Laden felt that non believers of Muslim should not be allowed in the birthplace of Islam. Since then, Bin Laden has been staging attacks against the US in an attempt to wipe out the American society. In 1998 Osama Bin Laden stated his goal was to kill all Americans and Jews including children. Bin Laden has been associated with 1993 World Trade Center bombing, the 1998 bombing of US embassies, the 2000 bombing of the USS Cole and September 11th. Osama Bin Laden is still at large and there is a $25 million dollar reward for him dead or alive. He is believed to be hiding somewhere in Afghanistan or Pakistan. <http://topics.nytimes.com///‌timestopics///_bin_laden/.html>. http://www.infoplease.com/spot/osamabinladen.html
13. Saddam Hussein has always been a threat to the US nation since the Gulf War. In 2002, President Bush identified Iraq as an axis of evil, and wanted Saddam Hussein removed from power. Saddam Hussein was said to have had weapons of mass destruction after he failed to cooperate with UN inspectors multiple times. Hussein also had ties with Al-Qaeda, and America feared that Saddam would aid Bin Laden and Al-Qaeda with weapons. Without hesitation, America invaded Iraq and found Saddam in a hole in December of 2003. He was then put on trial in an Iraqi court and sentenced to death. Saddam Hussein was also responsible for killing innocent civilians in Iraq and was convicted of genocide of women and children. http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0779964.html<http://www.who2.com/.html
14. On February 26, 1993, a massive explosion came within the parking lot of the World Trade Center. The explosion was a result of a terrorist attack in which the plan was to bring the towers down. The plan failed but 6 people were killed instantly, and 1000 people were injured. The terrorists however survived and managed to flee the scene unnoticed. The FBI teamed up with the New York Joint Terrorism Task Force and they began tracking Islamic fundamentalists in the city. While searching for evidence in the rubble, they came across a VIN plate that was suspiciously obliterated. The VIN had traced back to a rental van that was stolen a day before the attack. An Islamic fundamentalist named Mohammad Salameh had rented the vehicle and on March 4, an FBI SWAT team arrested him as he tried to get his $400 deposit back. One clue led to another and soon 6 other terrorists were arrested in connection to the attack.<http://www.usatoday.com///‌/‌/‌/capsule-flight175.htm>.http://www.flickr.com/photos/toksook/4419843879/in/set-72157623462575297/http://www.fbi.gov/page2/feb08/tradebom_022608.html

16. The World Trade Center consisted of two towers. The World Trade Center North Tower was built in 1970. The second tower was build in 1972. Each tower had a had 110 floors. The North Tower stood at 1,368 ft, while the south Tower stood at 1,362 ft. The buildings were so enormous, that they had their own ZIP codes. The World Trade Center was home to 430 companies. Many of these companies were insurance companies, banks, radio stations, TV stations, cell phone companies, and other wealthy corporations. <http://www.theharrowgroup.com//‌/_facts.htm>.
17. The Pentagon, located in Washington DC, is the headquarters of the national defense and the nerve center for command and control. The Pentagon houses approximately 26,000 military and civilian employees and about 3,000 non-defense support personnel. The Pentagon was built in the summer of 1941 by the request of General BrehonSommervell. The reason for the Pentagon being built was to provide a temporary solution to the War Department’s shortage of space. The Pentagon also sits on 34 acres of land and has 17.5 miles of corridor.. <http://pentagon.afis.osd.mil/>. http://www.inn-dc.com/pentagon.gifhttp://www.dtic.mil/ref/html/Welcome/general.html
18. American Airlines Flight 11 is the plane that hit the World Trade Center's North Tower. It was a Boeing 767on a scheduled flight from Boston to Los Angeles, with 81 passengers, nine flight attendants, and two pilots. At 7:59 AM, Flight 11 took off from Boston’s Logan Airport. At 8:15 Boston Air Traffic Control began unsuccessful attempts to contact the pilots after the plane failed to respond when ordered to climb to a higher altitude. At 8:20, flight 11 veered northward and departed dramatically from the westward route. They realized that the plane had been hijacked. At 8:46 Flight 11 crashed into the North Tower http://911research.wtc7.net/planes/attack/flight11.htmlhttp://www.airdisaster.com/dbase/graphics/n334aa.jpg
19. All 92 passengers including the terrorists were killed upon crashing into the tower. At 10:28AM, the north tower collapses. http://www.scienceof911.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/North_tower_black_smoke_trimmed.jpg
20. United Airlines Flight 175 is the plane that hit the World Trade Center South. It was a Boeing 767 scheduled from Boston to Los Angeles, with 56 passengers, 7 flight attendants, and 2 pilots. At 8:14 AM, Flight 175 took off from Boston’s Logan Airport, which was 16 minutes after its scheduled departure time. At 8:42 AM, Flight 175 veered off its planned course and began flying south. At 8:57 the plane descended from 28,000 ft and approached the World Trade Center. People started to become aware of the situation and made phone calls to loved ones. At 9:03, Flight 175 crashed into the South Tower. http://911research.wtc7.net/planes/attack/flight175.html
21. All 65 passengers in Flight 175 died instantly upon crashing into the South Tower. At 10:05 AM, the south tower collapses.http://www.911familiesforamerica.org/wp-content/uploads/2007/09/flight-175-just-before-impacting-the-south-tower.jpg
22. At 8:20 AM, Flight 77, carrying 64 passengers, departed Washington Dulles International Airport and was heading to Los Angeles. At 8:54 AM, five hijackers seized control of the plane and rerouted it back towards Washington D.C. At 9:34AM, the Northeast Air Defense Sector was notified that Flight 77 had been missing. At 9:37AM, the plane crashed into the Pentagon. http://www.flight77.info/>. http://info-wars.org/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/american_airlines_flight_77_n644aa_may_3_2001.jpg
23. All 64 passengers including the 5 terrorists were killed upon crashing into the Pentagon. 125 people inside the Pentagon were killed. http://physics911.net/images/pentcol.jpeg
24. At 10:10 AM, the fourth and final plane carrying 45 people was crashed into a field in rural Pennsylvania. Four terrorists stormed the cockpit and hijacked Flight 93 which departed from Newark, NJ and was heading to Los Angeles, California. At 9:24AM the pilot received word from the flight dispatcher that two aircrafts had hit the World Trade Center. At 9:26AM, the pilot was puzzled and asked the dispatcher to repeat the message. At 9:28AM, the terrorists had stormed the cockpit and hijacked the plane. At 9:57AM, the passengers had begun to revolt against the hijackers and storm the cockpit. The hijackers sensing the revolt, decided to take the plane down. The Plane crashed into the field at 580 miles per hour. http://www.projectcamelot.net/flight_93_757.jpghttp://www.debunk911myths.org/topics/United_Airlines_Flight_93http://911review.com/attack/flights/f93.html

27. Rescue efforts on the morning of September 11th were chaotic and fatal. New York City had a recall of firefighters which means all ladders in the area must report to the site. Many firefighters that were off duty that day also attended and helped with rescue efforts. All firefighters were commanded to make sure every floor of the building was evacuated. At the time of the first crash, the second building was not evacuated because they were not expecting another plane to hit. The FDNY deployed 200 units at the site and over 400 firefighters. Doctors and EMTs arrived at 8:53am and attempted to help all those in need. They also set up blood drives around the city that day. Almost all New York Police officers were there with assistance from other police officers from around the state and country. They helped evacuate the city and help with the rescue. The coast guard also helped with the rescue efforts. They evacuated almost 1,000,000 people in an 8 hour span by water. There were also 400 working dogs, which is the largest amount in US history . 341 firefighters were killed along with 2 paramedics and 23 NYPD officers. 2,995 people were killed that day and those who survived may be traumatized and have many lung related problems from that day. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:WTC-remnant_highres.jpg
28. The events of September 11th, 2001 were done by 19 terrorists. Five terrorists hijacked each plane except for Flight 93, which had four hijackers. All but one hijacker were from Saudi Arabia and came from wealthy families. All 19 terrorists were well educated and were noted as unexceptionable men who never had a history of standing out because of their political and or religious beliefs. They began to become influenced by radical Islamic ways and soon became obsessed. They ignored their families and the outer world and dedicated their time and life to religion. They eventually attended Al-Qaeda camps and rose to become leaders. They trained in hand to hand combat and were taught physical fighting skills which would be used to overpower the pilots. All 19 of the hijackers are dead and were responsible for the death for 2,995 innocent people.<http://www.welfarestate.com/‌/>.http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/04/28/AR2005042801315.html
29. On the morning of September 11th, President Bush was visiting an elementary school in Sarasota, Florida. Bush receives word at 9AM that a plane flew into the north tower of the world trade center. At this time he is unsure about what is going on. At 9:05 he receives word that another plane crashed into the south tower. He delays to address the tragedy because he is trying to receive more information first. At 9:30 president Bush meets with Condoleeza Rice and then he addresses the tragedy. President Bush also orders all flights be grounded. At 8:30 PM, Bush addresses the nation and assures the nation that the government is working with local authorities to save lives and victims of the attacks. He states, “The United States will hunt down and punish those responsible for these cowardly acts.” Less than a month after 9/11, President Bush had the US army invade Afghanistan to get rid of members of Al-Qaeda and Taliban, and also to hunt down Osama Bin Laden. http://www.september11news.com/PresidentBush.htmhttp://blog.reidreport.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/bush-9-11.jpg

31. The USA Patriot Act, which stands for Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act, was signed into law on October 26, 2001 by President Bush in response to the attacks on September 11th. The Patriot Act allowed the law enforcement agencies to search and listen on telephone calls, email, medical, financial, and other records. It also expanded the Secretary of the Treasury’s authority to regulate financial transactions especially with foreign individuals. It also allowed the law enforcement the power to deport anyone suspected of terrorism related acts. http://www.fincen.gov/statutes_regs/patriot/index.htmlhttp://elproyectomatriz.files.wordpress.com/2008/10/bush_signs_usa_patriot_act.jpg
32. Following the events of September 11th, the Department of Homeland Security was created. The primary goal was to prevent terrorist attacks in the United States, reducing the vulnerability of the United States to attacks, and minimizing the damage from future attacks or even natural disasters. Within the Department of Homeland Security, many divisions were created to ensure safety. The Border and Transportation Security divisionincludes the Transportation Security Administration, the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and the Bureau of Customs and Border Protection. The Emergency Preparedness and Response division, which includes the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Strategic National Stockpile and the National Disaster Medical System responses to disasters. The Science and Technology division, including the Environmental Measurements Laboratory is to research and organize scientific and engineering resources to protect the homeland and the national infrastructure.http://www.infoplease.com/ce6/history/A0909720.html
33. The US Department of Homeland Security also created a system to let the nation and government agencies know the level of risk for a potential terrorist attack. Currently, we are at ELEVATED, meaning there is significant risk of terrorist attacks on US soil. For all US and domestic flights, the threat level is HIGH meaning there is a high risk of terrorist attacks.http://www.dhs.gov/files/programs/Copy_of_press_release_0046.shtmhttp://www.alarms-to-alert-you.com/terroralert.html
34. The War in Afghanistan began on October 7th, 2001 with US air strikes on Taliban and Al-Qaeda targets. While that was occurring, American, British, and other allied forces attacked on the ground in search for Taliban and Al-Qaeda members. American troops also worked with the northern alliance and coordinated air and ground attacks together. These attacks led to the fall of Kabul as Taliban forces retreated from most of Northern Afghanistan. As more troops entered the war, the Taliban and Al-Qaeda retreated further south toward the mountainous border region between Afghanistan and Pakistan. We still are currently in Afghanistan in an attempt to wipe out all Taliban and Al-Qaeda forces to stop terrorism. President Obama has called for more troops in Afghanistan to increase the size of the military presence. As of January 22nd, at least 2500 Al-Qaeda are dead, 23,000 Taliban are dead, and 31,000 plus Afghan civilians were killed. There were 882 US soldiers killed. http://www.greenchange.org/img/original/nap%20afghanistan%20camp%20blessing.jpghttp://www.historyguy.com/war_in_afghanistan.html#afghanwarcauses
35. Following 9/11, a connection was found between Iraq and Al-Qaeda. With a potential threat of Saddam Hussein supplying weapons to Al-Qaeda, the US government had no choice but to use total disarmament of Iraqis. The United States would slowly place troops around Iraq and began closing in on them without attacking them. In early 2003, Iraqis were not cooperating fully with UN inspectors which led to the issue of an ultimatum. The ultimatum was issued on March 17, 2003 and stated the Saddam Hussein and his sons to enter into exile within 48 hours or face military conflict. Saddam refused and the war began. On December 13, 2004 Saddam Hussein was captured and put on trial. He was then executed. Our troops are currently still in Iraq in an attempt to restore order and sanity back to their country. There 4,368 U.S soldiers killed and 31,572 wounded. http://historyguy.com/iraq_war.htmhttp://www.commondreams.org/views04/1206-02.htmhttp://www.pigbird.com/images_war/iraq_soldiers_prisoner.jpg
36. Following the 9/11 attacks, Congress passed the Aviation and Transportation Security Act which created the Transportation Security Administration also known as the TSA. This act made it mandatory that federal employees be in charge of airport screening. The TSA implemented tougher and more thorough search procedures for both passengers and their baggage. The letters will be sent to an organization known as Letters from Home. Letters From Home is a program that has emerged across the nation for a way for people to communicate to their love and support for what our troops are doing for us. They are a non-profit organization and are dedicated to supporting our army, navy, marines, and coast guard stationed away from home. The next time they will be shipping letters out is July 1st.http://www.lettersfromhomeprogram.org/
44. The date Sept. 11 will forever be in the hearts and minds of all Americans. The events that took place on that day and the lives that were brutally cut short will leave a long lasting memory in American history. I have learned a lot about September 11th in terms of cause and effects, and I have also learned a lot about what terrorism is and why the United States is hated by the Middle Eastern region of the world. This event has forever changed the world around us and has impacted every Americans life in some way. http://www.flickr.com/photos/moiht/3910309210/
