4. The Prophet Lot (A.s) lived at the same
time as the Prophet Ibrahim (A.s).
Prophet Ibrahim (P.B.U.H) when left
Egypt supplemented by his nephew
Prophet Lot (P.B.U.H) who then went to
the city of Sodom, which was on the
western shore of the Dead Sea.
5.
6. The Prophet Lot (P.B.U.H) was sent as a Messenger to a neighbouring tribe to
the Prophet Ibrahim (A.s)That tribe, According to the Qur'an, was filled with evil.
Its residents waylaid, robbed and killed travellers.
Another common evil among them was a perversion never before seen in the
world “homosexuality”. In other words we can say that men had sex with men
instead of, with women and it was practiced openly and unashamedly. This
unnatural act later became known as “Sodomy”. The doings of Lot's people
saddened his heart.Their unwholesome reputation spread throughout the land.
Moreover, they were so deeply sunk in their immoral habits that they were deaf
to Lot's preaching. Swamped in their unnatural desires, they refused to listen,
even when Lot warned them ofAllah's punishment.
7. Prophet Lot (A.S.) attempted to get his people to turn from their
wicked ways. He usually say to them, “Won’t you fear Allah? I am a
trustworthy messenger, so fear Allah and obey me. I don’t ask for any
reward from you. My reward is from the Lord of theWorlds. Of all the
creatures on this earth, you alone approach males, and leave the
women whomAllah has created for you to be your mates. You are
people who sin beyond all limits.”
As the years passed, he again and again repeat his mission but he didn’t
avail. No one responded to his call and believed except the members of
his family and even in his household, not all the members believed.
Lot's wife, like Noah's wife, a disbeliever.
The people knew that Prophet Lot (A.S.) and his followers were leading
a much cleaner and purer life than their own. Deep down in their hearts
they knew that what he said was true, but they didn’t like being told so.
So they would say, “If you don’t stop your preaching, you will surely be
motivated out of town!”
8.
9. He in turn would reply, “I do
detest your doings. O my
Lord! Deliver me and my
family from such things as
they do!” (Surat Ash-Shuara:
169)
11. Allah declared:
"If home is the place of comfort and
rest, then Lot found none, for he was
tormented both inside and outside his
home. His life was continuous torture
and he suffered greatly, but he
remained patient and steadfast with his
people. The years rolled by, and still not
one believed in him. Instead, they
depreciated his message and mockingly
challenged him, 'Bring Allah'sTorment
upon us if you are one of the truthful!'
“[Al-Qur'an 29:29]
12. Now, at about the same time that
Allah sent angels as messengers to
Ibrahim, to foretell the birth of Ishaq,
the angels also told Ibrahim that they
had been sent to destroy the people in
Prophet Lot’s (A.S.) township. His
immediate reaction was, “But there is
Lot there!”They replied, “We well
know who is there. We will certainly
save him and his following, except his
wife. She is among those who lag
behind.”
13.
14.
15. Therefore, the angels left Abraham (P.B.U.H) and headed for Sodom the
town of Lot (P.B.U.H).They reached the walls of the town in the afternoon.
The first person who caught sight of them was Lot's daughter, who was
sitting beside the river, filling her jug with water. When she lifted her face and
saw them, she was stunned that there could be men of such magnificent
beauty on earth.
16. One of the three men (angels) asked her, "O
maiden, is there a place to rest?"
When darkness fell on the town, Lot escorted his guest
to his home. No one was aware of their presence.
However, as soon as Lot's wife saw them, she slipped
out of the house quietly so that no one noticed her.
Quickly, she ran to her people with the news and it
spread to all the inhabitants like wildfire. The people
rushed towards Lot quickly and excitedly. Lot was
surprised by their discovery of his guests and he
wondered who could have informed them. The matter
became clear, however, when he could not find his wife
anywhere.
17.
18. Thus adding grief to his sorrow when Lot saw
the mob approaching his house, he shut the
door, but they kept on banging on it. He
pleaded with them to leave the visitors alone
and fear Allah's punishment.
Lot's people waited until he had finished his
short sermon, and then they roared with
laughter. Blinded by passion, they broke down
the door.At that terrible moment, he wished
he had the power to push them away from his
guests. Seeing him in a state of helplessness,
and grief the guests said, "Do not be anxious or
frightened, Prophet Lot (P.B.U.H) we are
angels, and these people will not harm you."
19. Then the angels conveyed their message to Prophet Lot (A.S.).They said, “O Lot!We are runners from your Lord.
Portable with your family while yet a part of the night remains. You bring up the rear and don’t let anyone look
back. But your wife will remain behind and to her will happen what occurs to the people. Sunrise is the appointed
time and it is not far off, so go!”
When morning came the cities were turned upside down. Brimstones as hard as baked clay rained down upon the
metropolises and spread, layer on layer. Everyone and everything in the towns were destroyed. That was the end
of those who pampered in evil and law-breaking.
The statement of “turning (the cities) upside down” implies that the region was
totally destroyed by a violent earthquake. Accordingly,The Lake of Lot, where the
devastation took place, bears “obvious” suggestion of such a disaster.
20.
21.
22. We turned the place
completely upside down
and rained down on them
stones of hard-baked clay.
There are certainly Signs in
that for the discerning.They
were beside a road which
still exists.There is certainly
a Sign in that for the
believers. (Qur'an, 15:74-77)
23. An illustration showing the volcanic eruption and the
collapse that followed it, which caused the whole people to
disappear.
24. Archaeological excavations have revealed that the city lay close to the Dead
Sea on the present-day Israeli-Jordanian border. According to scientists, the
area is covered in large deposits of sulphur. For this reason, no life in the form
of animals or plants is to be found there and the region stands as a symbol of
destruction. Sulphur is an element which appears as a result of volcanic
eruptions. Indeed, there is clear evidence in the Qur'an that the method of
destruction was earthquake and volcanic eruptions
The technical aspect of the disaster suffered by the people of Lot has been
revealed in studies carried out by geologists. These have shown that the
earthquake which wiped out the people of Lot came about as the result of a
very long fault line. The Jordan River drops a total of 180 meters during its 190
km course. This, and the fact that the Dead Sea is 400 meters below sea level,
combined to prove that there once took place a major geological event in and
around this area.
