3. Introduction to the Setting We volunteered at the UCP Bailes East Orange Campus, located in Research Park. We did most of our hours inside the science lab, pictured below. We also spent some time observing classes (not pictured).

7. Getting Started I talked with Kelly Grillo on the Teachers in Action Webchats, and she told me about the project she wanted to start She said that she wanted to create science labs and lessons for the students at UCP Bailes, because that had a science lab but they didn’t use it

8. Engagement Activities We met every Tuesday morning starting in January Our first task was to create a learning center After that, each of our group-mates worked on creating a lesson that fulfilled one of the science big ideas for K-2nd grade

Participant Demographics Our service learning group: Kelly Grillo (Coordinator) Kristene Graves Molly Lonergan Valerie Koheler Jessica Delgado Lauretta Mills Ashlee Gibbon Our group’s age range is from 20-30. Kelly has a learning disability, which she shared about during our time together. The service recipients are the students at UCP Bailes (East Orlando) from grades K-2 These students are a combination of students who are normally developing and students who have varying exceptionalities Around 100 students were served this semester, and our group laid the groundwork for more groups to serve more students for many years to come!

Reflection of your Experience What I’ve Learned: People, and disabilities, come in all shapes and sizes Accommodating lessons for all learners is easy once you have the right mindset and tools It’s sometimes more challenging and nerve-wracking to present to peers who will critique you than kids who don’t know you might have messed up All students are PEOPLE first
