Technology Use Plan for St. Mary’s County Public Schools
The rationale for our technology use plan is: St. Mary’s County Public Schools goal is to improve student learning in the core content areas with the use of technology, using the Maryland Voluntary State Curriculum, the Core Learning Goals, and the National Technology Standards as guides for the framework.
The technology use plan’s planning team has to represent the community and the school system as a whole. It should include, but not limited to students, teachers, parents, community members, technology coordinator, school board members, and technology consultants.
The step to developing the technology use plan are:
Determine what the technology needs are in the district.
Make goals based on the technology needs.
Create Subcommittees for each goal.
Create a timeline of when to achieve the goals set by the committee.
Decide what type of staff development is needed.
Decide on how much funding is needed and how to get that funding.
Create and give an evaluation to see if the goals are being achieved.
The goals and objectives for the Technology Use Plan are:
Provide wireless internet throughout all schools in the district.
At least 3 computers per classroom.
One Smartboard per classroom.
Turning Point technology in every classroom.
1 tech person for every 3 schools.
Create training opportunities geared toward staff needs based on the needs assessment survey.
Provide a safe on-line learning environment (for example Sharepoint)
Integrate technology into the core content areas
A survey has been developed to help us understand where the staff stands with technology and to assist us in creating our goals. The survey is
divided into four sections:
Technology Background
Technology used in the Classroom
Technology Integration
Staff Development
There are three types of staff development:
Student/Teacher Communication, an on-line method of communications between teachers and students.
Teacher training, different options for teachers to learn new technologies
Student Research, what are the best methods of researching?
There are a few things top consider when evaluating:
All staff should take the needs assessment survey so we as a county know what is lacking.
Basic observation will tell us what types of technology is being used.
Staff comments and concerns will help point us decide what needs they have
Current research will tell us what is new and also what types of technology may be beneficial for us.
The Technology Use Plan is going to be implemented over the next three years. We will meet annually to receive status updates. At the end of the three years, we will evaluate the plan and revise it.
