Atherosclerosis
2. Definition
Prof. K. K. Zambare
Atherosclerosis is a disease in which fibro fatty
plaque builds up inside your arteries.
The fibro fatty deposit is called as plaque
Plaque may rupture and cause blockage of artery
by clotting
3. Causes
Prof. K. K. Zambare
Hypertension
Obesity
Fatty diet
Smoking
Diabetes
Family history of cardiac diseases
4. Causes
Prof. K. K. Zambare
Lack of exercise
Familial history of cardiac disease
Inflammation due to arthritis and lupus
5. Symptoms
Prof. K. K. Zambare
Usually disease does not show any symptom but if
plaque rupture or of large size and reduces the
blood supply then shows following symptoms
Shortness of breath
Pain or pressure in upper body
Chest pain
6. Symptoms
Prof. K. K. Zambare
Pain in arms, neck, or jaw.
Numbness in arms
Headache
Paralysis
Difficulty in speaking
Facial numbness
7. Diagnosis
Prof. K. K. Zambare
Blood test
High cholesterol level can be checked in blood.
X-ray
Useful for detecting hardening and narrowing of
arteries
CT / MRI scan
It is useful for detecting hardening and
narrowing of large arteries, aneurysms and
calcium deposits in artery walls
8. Diagnosis
Prof. K. K. Zambare
Angiogram
Dye injected in arteries, the arteries become
visible on X-ray, revealing areas of blockage
Electriocardiogram (ECG):
Abnormal ECG may be indication of coronary
atheroma.
9. Complications
Prof. K. K. Zambare
Stroke
It is life threatening condition due to blockage in blood
vessels of brain.
Cardiac arrhythmia
Atherosclerosis may sometimes responsible for
arrhythmia.
Renal failure
Blockage in renal artery may lead to renal failure.
10. Complications
Prof. K. K. Zambare
Heart failure/ coronary artery disease
Atherosclerosis may lead to decreased cardiac output.
Heart attack
Coronary atherosclerosis may lead to reduced blood
supply to heart which may cause heart attack.
Aneurysm
In this condition walls of artery form balloon which may
burst and may be life threatening
