This presentation includes an activity where students will become radiologists and examine several x-rays of the human body. They must use the given clues to determine which bone the x-ray is depicting. Afterwards the students will follow along and lern the "Dem Bones" song. This activity can used to review the skeletal system and is directly connected to the third grade science curriculum.
2. Your Mission… Today we will become radiologists and examine several x-rays to determine which bone we are looking at. You will be given clues about their function and then asked to write down what bone you think it is.
3. Why are bones important? There are 206 bones in the average human skeleton. Together these bones makeup what we call the Skeletal System. The skeletal system provides form and shape for our bodies. Together our bones protect vital organs that we need survive.
4. 1. This bone… Protects the brain, eyes, ears, and nose. Connected to the top of the spine.
5. 2. This bone… 33 linked bones (vertebrate) that get larger as they go down. Separated by disks of cartilage that act as shock absorbers. Helps to keep you upright.
6. 3. This bone… 12 pairs of ribs; two pairs are "floating.“ Back links to vertebrae. Front links to sternum. Protects heart, lungs, and other internal organs.
7. 4. This bone… Made of 5 fused vertebrae and hip bones. Protects the organs used for digesting and reproduction.
8. 5. This bone… Includes three different types: carpals, metacarpals, phalanges. Made up of 27 bones. Connected to the lower part of your arm. What part of the body is this?
9. 6. This bone… Made up of three types of bones: tarsals, metatarsals, phalanges. Made up of 26 bones. Most utilized part of the body. What part of the body is this?
