Distance education meets coaching certification
1. A DE Program designed to certify
coaches as a Community Coach in the
Sport of Badminton
2. Why a Community Coaching Program
• The National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) restructured the
way that coaches were certified on April 1, 2004.
• Previously coaches were certified at levels
• Level 1-3 were considered Community Coaches
• Level 4 or 5 comprised of High Performance Coaches
The NCCP recognized the need for more Community Coaches who don’t require the
lengthy Theory course that was required to receive any level of coaching.
The NCCP devised a way to incorporate the Theory portion of coaching certification
into the Community Coach Course.
3. The Reason for creating the course
(besides the fact that it is a requirement
for 804)
Current Level 1 Badminton coaches are not recognized by the NCCP as being
certified.
“Old” Level 1 coaches, in order to become certified must take the
Community Coach in the Sport of Badminton Course
There is a demand for new badminton coaches in Saskatchewan. Any coach
that takes part in the Saskatchewan Winter Games, Saskatchewan
Aboriginal Winter Games, Western Canadian Winter Games or the North
American Aboriginal Games must be Certified as a Community Coach in the
sport of badminton if that is what they are coaching.
The big reason-there are only two people in the province certified to
conduct the course. This causes a lot of issues.
4. What the Program is about
-Over the course of four weeks participants will be engaged in an online
experience where they will receive a Community Coaching Certification in
the sport of badminton
Participants will take the course asynchronously and will have the
opportunity (optionally) to meet face to face once to go over any questions
or concerns they have with course
5. Learning outcomes
The following topics will be covered over a period of four weeks:
Introduction to Community Coaching
The Equipment and the Laws of Badminton
Practice Planning and Badminton Safety
Tasks of the Community Coach
Competition Organization
Practice Coaching
6. How the Course will be delivered…
The Course Management Tool that will be used is Edmodo. Edmodo is
secure place for instructor to connect with participants. It is an online
platform that is widely used by educators and has been compared to
Facebook. Participants should have little hangups about using this tool.
Participants with smartphones and access to the Internet would be able to
take the course as easily as those with a computer.
Google+ Hangouts will be used for video conferencing. This is a free tool
that Google has put out that allows for up to 10 people to videoconference.
Any participants that do not want to be included in the video “part” of the
conference may follow through the chat channel
7. Technical Requirements
Participants would need a computer, tablet or Smartphone with access to
the Internet.
If they do not have a computer, they would need access to a DVD player as a
disc will be sent out prior to the course starting. The disc will have videos
that can be viewed on Edmodo. The DVD is produced to cut back on
bandwidth.
8. Funding
There would be several partners that would fund this course. The first and
foremost would be covered by SaskSport Inc. through the Membership
Assistance Program (MAP) Grants. Additional funding would come from the
Aboriginal Community Sport Grant Program. A nominal fee will be paid by
the participant, which is usually covered by a local association. This fee
would be $50. This is a standard fee charged to coaches who take part in the
Face to Face clinic.
9. Assessment
A series of online tests will be administered at the end of each module.
These assessments will be created in Edmodo and participants in the course
will know their results immediately.
Participants will be allowed to re-take any quiz. The quizzes do not count for
an overall mark but simply to assess whether or not the instructor needs to
contact participant if he/she feels necessary.
10. CONGRATULATIONS!
Participants who successfully take part in the course for the four weeks will
be given a Community Coach in the Sport of Badminton Certificate.
